Out of boredom and curiosity I decided to see what special character is the toughest. So, using the current edition of each race's army book I checked for the strongest special character from each. Unfortunately some were lacking here, as I decided not to allow magic based heroes - only those with combat abilities. I'm sure many of you will dispute my choices, but they seemed the better of the groups. This was the list:
King Louen Leoncoeur
Gorthor the Beastlord
Throt the Unclean
Tyrion, Defender of Ulthuan
Settra the Imperishable
Archaon the Everchosen
Skarbrand the Exiled One
Orion, the King in the Woods
Emperor Karl Franz
Konrad Von Carstein
Valtan, Exalted of Sigmar
Randomising the matches they are as follows:
Settra the Imperishable vs Thorgim Grudgebearer
Lasting a total of two rounds, this was short and most in Thorgrim's favour. First round all Settra's attacks were stopped by the save or ward, he caused one in the following round. Thorgrim caused two in both rounds, sending the mummy back to his crypt.
King Louen Leoncoeur vs Grimgor Ironhide
Short. Brutal. Grimgor hits and wounds with all attacks. The king just has no defence, the blessing and his regen save nothing. The king is dead. Hail to the King!
Kroq-Gar vs Malus Darkblade
Another miss match. Malus lacks a decent save or a ward. He did manage to take off two wounds, the daemon was unleashed, but three wounds dealt in return was too much for the Druchii. Another one dies.
Archaon the Everchosen vs Orion, King in the Woods
Orion didn't stand a chance. The armour and the high ward save stopped him, not a single wound. In fact Archaon did take a wound, from his own sword. Three rounds and eight wounds by the dark gods chosen hero.
Gurthor the Beastlord vs Valten the Exalted of Sigmar
Valten was going to do well from the start. The multiplying effect of Ghal-Maraz makes him a character killer, if he can get past the ward save. And he did, but not before Gurthor dropped him to his last wound mind. Not all the chosen one's way.
Tyrion the Defender of Ulthuan vs Konrad Von Carstein
Lacking any combat characters Konrad stood up to show the vamps who's boss. And ended up showing who's a chump. Tyrion takes him down in the first round.
Emperor Karl Franz vs Greasus Goldtooth
The Emperor isn't one to be shown up by the upstart Valten, and takes down the orge warlord in just two turns. Five wounds from Ghal-Maraz. Goes to show what proper Dwarf weapons can do.
Throt the Unclean vs Skarbrand the Exiled One
Throt never stood a chance. Five wounds later and Skarband is placing a new rat shaped skull onto Khorne's throne
Grimgor Ironhide vs Thorgrim Grudgebearer
Dwarf vs Orc are always interesting matches and this proved to be no less so. It was short, bloody and brutal. And that's just Thorgrim! Thorgrim wins the day with the multiplier from the famed Axe of Grimnir, taking the Black Orc down in just one wound (three wounds).
Archaeon the Everchosen vs Kroq-Gar
A match up that wasn't too over balanced. Woo! Hitting and wounding on 4s or 3s meant it was about average. However, it was not the best of days to be the chosen one. First off a disastrous way to almost kill yourself is with your own sword - inflicting two wounds. Then, the opponents measly 5+ ward save stopping five of your six attacks in no way to prove your worth. He made up for in the next round by smacking the lizardman three times.
Tyrion, Defender of Ulthuan vs Valten the Exalted of Sigmar
Valten was truly blessed in this match up. The elf only caused a total of two wounds in two rounds. Valten once again showed the elves that dwarf is best and smacked the pointy eared git from his horse with a nasty five wounds.
Skarbrand the Exiled One vs Emperor Karl Franz
Outclassed the human Emperor gave it his all. Almost killing the daemon in the first round with a massive four wounds, this right after the daemon fluffed his six attacks to round a nice four 1s on the wounding. But the Emperor's luck quickly ran out and was smashed to a pulp in the following round.
Thorgrim Grudgebearer vs Archaeon the Everchosen
I'd like to say it was close... but it really wasn't. Archaon lays it on first with a huge three wounds, and the dwarf High King's reply? An even more impressive five wounds. Once more, the Axe of Grimnir showing its stuff off.
Skarbrand the Exiled One vs Valten the Exalted of Sigmar
A very close fight. The daemon slaughtered the champion with a nasty four wounds, but the ultimate Valten moment happens and a pass of his LD and he's back on his feet - a little worse for wear I imagine. Valtens response was....to pulverise the daemon all the way back to Khorne. Six wounds from two hits. OUCH!
So, it ends up as thus...
Thorgrim Grudgebearer vs Valten the Exalted of Sigmar
Both characters were there due to their weapons ability to do multiple wounds, rather than their fighting abilities. It was going to be close. In the end, it really wasn't. Valten's six attacks was just too much for the dwarven king, even though he took two wounds off the human, he just couldn't handle the pain to follow it. In two rounds, Valten capped at a mightily impressive thirteen wounds!! The dwarf king was lain low by his own race's infamous weapon. That had to be a blow for morale!
So, the end of this is that.... Valten, the Exalted Of Sigmar is the one you want besides you in a fight. The high number of attacks along with auto wounding and no save meant the higher the chance of him killing in one turn - a lucky D3 roll and your toast.
I apologise that there was no actual fluff writing or proper stats...its late and this was for a bit of fun. I hope you enjoy it, feel free to prove me wrong with your own version. Remember, this is not based off of stats but of actual dice rolls. Its all in the name of luck.
Wehe! Cool idea, I like this.
And the irony of the dwarf getting pasted by a Dwarven weapon... brilliant!
Good of you to post this. I'm annoyed the Vampire went out in the first round (I mean, they're meant to be immortal, yes? You've got some explaining to do, Konrad!)
Even running this with different match-ups could be interesting...
I enjoyed it till archeon died. Then I was sad. He wants a rematch!!!
A couple of folk in chat were not happy with my choice of some characters - Malus and Konrad mainly. Like I said, I was after combat heroes. But, feel free to do your own and see who comes out on top!
Thanks for the comments. It was a bit of fun, and I remember WD doing this a long, long time ago back in issue #221. A bloodthirster was subbed in and mauled everyone in the end. This was in the hero hammer era - Nagash was involved. I wanted to recreate this with the newer heroes.
That was pretty fun. Were you going with initiave for who was hitting first?
Surely not Kuffy!!! Where is Kholek Suneater????
You should do one with only casters, or do a major battle royal and see what happens. I only have a few books otherwise i might of done these myself.
throt the unclean? what about good old headtaker?
If anyone believes on telekinesis, raise my hand!!
I'll say a Bloodthirster w/Obsidian armor and Immortal fury should kill them all.
Or a Greater Unclean One w/Balesword and Noxious Vapors.
Both are pure nastiness.
Record: Win - Loss - Draw: Hive Fleet Pandora (New) 32-6-6 Space Wolf 7th Co. 52-11-6
Blood Angels 12-4-2 Daemonhunters 20-8-3
Imperial Guards 12-5-2 Daemons 8-3-2
Archaon, meanwhile, has 12 attacks (10 from him, 2 from his horse) that hit on 3's and wound on 5's vs. a 5+ save. Should average 8 hits, ~3 wounds, 2 get past save. Would take a bit, but it's not unlikely he'll come out on top. Assuming he doesn't get unlucky / kill himself. :p
