This was my fourth year to attend the Lonewolf GT. This year it moved from Dallas to Arlington, which is practically Dallas.
There were almost 100 competitors, and I once again took my WEs.
This year I intentionally gimped my list and took no Wardancers, no Treeman, and no lord. Even more I took Eternal Guard and Treekin. Here is my list:
Noble, general, lt armor, shield, spear, helm of the hunt, hail of doom arrow
Noble, eagle, lt armor, shield, pageant of shrikes, hunter's talon (sniper noble)
Spellsinger, 2 scrolls
Branchwraith, cluster of radiants (extra dispel die)
12 glade guard, mus
10 glade guard, mus
10 glade guard, mus
6 glade riders, mus
12 eternal guard, full command
3 warhawks riders
6 wild riders, full command, war banner
Lone Wolf grades lists so that "hard armies might fight each other and soft armies might face each other most of the time." So when possible, we're sorted by battle points and then by soft-hard grade. I expected to be in the softer bunch and would be.
A good matchup against an all gobbo army. He had a lvl 4 shaman, a lvl 2 shaman, a boss on a giant squig, and a boss in a unit of night goblins. Three units of night gobbos total with 12 fanatics. 3 units of 10 spiders (not sure why he took such large units...it helped me). 2 units of wolves. Squig herd. Squig hoppers. 2 doom divers.
Stuart's goblins did what goblins do: they imploded. I first targeted his squig herd and hoppers, knowing what they could do if they hit me. The herd lost its handlers, exploded, and did a fair amount of damage to surrounding units. Then I targeted his fast units and took them out, leaving the night goblin units at the mercy of my shooters and more mobile units. To add insult to injury, my opponent's dice crapped out on him, and it was a massacre.
20 points for wood elves. Win and objective.
Well, maybe my list isn't so soft. I pulled Dark Elves, but it was a fairly friendly DE list. Dreadlord on pegasus with pendant and 1+ armor. 1 sorceress, BSB, and something else. Assassin. 2 units of 6 black, 2 units of shades, some cold ones, a block or two of spears, hydra, and 2 rbts.
This went south fast. I underestimated his shooting and deployed farther up than I usually do against DEs. He took out my warhawks, half a unit of glade guard, and my great eagle. In return, my shooting couldn't hit, much less wound. The game continued in this fashion: I was outdiced and outplayed.
A loss with no objective. 4 points.
I played Skaven. I haven't gotten to play the new book much, just twice and both losses. This was going to be tough. It was a true horde with 422 models.
But he had an otherwise soft list. No abomination. Just slaves, clanrats, several 6 man giant rat units, a doom wheel, three units of censer bearers, a BSB, and a Warlord on a litter.
I castled to my right and put some obligatory diverters on the left. I just couldn't do enough damage before I was overwhelmed. I did rally to kill his two heroes and tank some clanrats, but he had killed too much and held quarters.
A loss but I got the objective, 8 points.
Day one ended and I was on track for the kind of record I expected. I'd need to snag a win on Sunday to get 2 wins, maybe three if i was lucky.
Day 2, Game Four
I wasn't sure what to think of this pairing. I knew it was in my favor, but it was something I hadn't faced before, the new Beastmen army. And he had done the minotaur army. So it was four units of 3 minos with great weapons, 3 units of raiders, 3 hero minos and 1 lord mino. Then two ghorgons. Gulp!
Good thing, though, everything but the raiders were frenzied.
This game went like you can guess it would with shooters and skirmishers against a small, foot-plodding unit.
I started on his general's unit with shooting and would kill all of them and the general eventually. I'd cripple another unit from shooting before taking it out with dryads. Dryads jumped another unit and got backup from another unit of dryads. I have to say, this went well for me because my dryads were making ward saves like nobody's business.
One ghorgon, I baited and then hit with treekin in the front and wild riders on the flank. It took a couple of turns and 4 casualties to the Wild Riders but I killed the ghorgon.
The other ghorgon got into my archers but I was able to maneuver and not give up many points to it, just two units of shooters that had done their job by then.
The raiders were dealt with, though they did have a round of good shooting and killed my warhawks.
Wood Elves pull a victory and objective for 20 points. So 2 wins, 2 losses, 52 points out of a possible 80.
Ah, I've waited 2 years for this matchup at a GT, Ogre Kingdoms. He was a nice guy and played a good game, but this was another favorable matchup for me.
He deployed his two units of 20 gnoblars as a screen in front of his bulls and iron guts. His tyrant went into a unit, his hunter off by himself, and two butchers behind units. He had a scraplauncher, one unit of lead belchers, and not much more.
I deployed back to buy time with shooting. I used his screen against him. I shot at the screen and started maneuvering around the flanks. I picked off some gnoblars who passed their panic tests with the general there. I would continue to whittle the screens down but then I quit shooting at them when they were down to 10 or so. I pushed my dryads right in front of one unit so that his iron guts were stuck behind them and couldn't charge me. My wild riders were about to bust the flank, with the dryads positioned to push through the gnoblars to the iron guts behind.
The wild riders would go on a rampage, break bulls, hit guts in flank, break guts, charge bulls who had gotten away and rallied, break and catch them, charge a butcher, break him. They were champs. His tyrant got held up by dryads who made amazing ld saves. My treekin would charge the tyrant but never do much to it. Shooting worked on the remaining units. The scraplauncher I just avoided and misled, and the hunter I ignored.
So another win, 20 points with the objective. 72 points total.
So I pulled back to 3 wins, 0 draws, and 2 losses. That was as good or better than I expected to do. In fact, I've never done better or worse than 3 wins at lonewolf.
I ended in 11th place with sports scores and strong painting scores. I would win best small miniatures for my nurgle sorcerer, silver medal for my tzeentch bsb, and best in show for the nurgle sorcerer, winning a GW hobby bag that I have no idea what to do with. I would also win 2nd players choice (competitors' choice), netting a Stegadon kit. But the biggie was winning best army (judge's choice) and a lizardmen battalion.
So I achieved more than I had hoped. I wanted to take a soft but "pretty" list and hope for best army. But I was put into a soft tier and did well enough to get enough battle and general points to push me up the ladder. So never less than 12th place but never better than 8th at Lonewolf. Still out of 94 or so, pretty good.
Another WE player won overall. I need to learn his mojo and take the cake one day!
Congrats on the awards for your painting; they're well deserved. Good reports.
2010 WoC Cav W/L/D - 7/3/1
The games were 2000 pts? Sounds like a fun time....I wish my city had such a tournament... :]
....Texas is a long way from Montreal though......if only webways were real.
2250 is a nice size, let's your use lords if you like and not suffer on basic units.....or my usual preference, bulk up on the basics.
The few tournaments I've played were 1500 points, 3 games and with points like yours. Not even 20 players though.....the woodelf player won at least two of these. Sounds like they can be built into a nicely flexible and competitive list.
Congrats David! And good game on game 2. See you in Austin?
P.S. I don't take Cold Ones and never will b/c they are stupid, yuck! /shudder
Ya I might change up my list a little. The small units of black guard had marginal effect. I might be totally lame and take another unit of shades or a unit of crossbowmen.
