I have used the Battle Chronicler to concieve this battle report for a quick glance into how things went. I shall follow up with written information shortly. For the time being here is a slide show of my turns. Enjoy.
Scenario = Dawn Attack ( I think that's what its called)
Basically on a roll of a 1 that selected unit deploys to the left 18inchs of the board. A 2 takes you to the right. 4-5 deploys to to the middle, and a 6 allows you to deploy wherever.
This is why I don't manage to get a detachment into the flank at one point but meh...
Empire Turn 1:
I hold everything on my right flank. Vanguard my pistoleers to within 12" of his archers looking to sneak through the gap his reaver's are trying to close.
My Knights and Arch Lector move straight forward around 10" trying to stay out of his chariots charge range.
Greatswords move forward 5" to stay close to the right flank to wait to see what the Sword masters aim for.
Handgunners move forward to get my wizard into range for some magic missiles.
Magic goes ok, I take out a few white lines with the lore of lights magic missle, I also cast Dwellers below on his horde spear men but he uses his dispel scroll.
My shooting sees one of his white lion chariots eating a cannon ball. Only one ellirian reaver dies to my pistoleers shooting >_<
This ends my turn one.
HE Turn One:
Everything marches forward aside from his 3 bolt throwers, archers and reavers.
He takes out 3 Knights with his RBT shooting and knocks out 2 Pistoleers with his reaver's and archers. His magic is rather uneventful as I pop a Feedback scroll causing one wound on his Mage I, and dispelling everything else he tries to cast.
Empire Turn Two:
I decide to move my right flank back onto the board edges to get a little more shooting in from my artillery. The Pistoleers move behind the archers and towards the flank of the reavers. My knights march forward right in front of his archers, looking for a flank charge on his chariot. My great swords move up on the edge of the hill out of LOS so his Swordmasters can't see them.
My shooting sees a few more White lions eating hot lead. I use my Hocland long rifle to snipe his Mage I dead. 2 more Ellirian reavers die to my pistoleers. My mortar kills 2 swordmasters, and my HRB missfires. Still no combat.
My magic phase is not great, I keep forgetting to use the AL and WP prayers. I get the magi missile off on the white lions again however and kill another 2-3.
HE Turn Two:
His chariot fails a charge into my handgunners, setting them up very nicely for a flank charge from my knights. His reaver's move in between the gap away from my pistoleers, off to go warmachine hunting. Seeing my main battle line shuffle back, he marches his spearmen and seaguard forwards the full 10" towards my Halberdiers and swordsmen. His Swordmasters angle themselves to see my greatswords and eventually charge next turn ( It was a little sceptical as this hill was actually a temple of skulls) His white lions move up towards my hangunners and he transfer his remaining mage to his archers right flank to see more. His shooting is a little uneventful, however I do loose 2 more knights.
Magic fluffs again thanks to my +3 DD and Seal of destruction.
Empire Turn Three:
My Knight charge his chariot taking no wounds and then over-run hoping to catch the white lions behind but they are just out. I still can't see those swordmasters so i'm preparing for to take the charge there. I charge my halberdier horde into his spearmen, with one 15man halberd detach hitting his left flank. The swordsmen charge into his seaguard, unfortunately their 15man detachment can't physically fit into the flank so they remain behind the swordsmen.
I win the horde combat and pursue his renaming 30+ spearmen and korhil and kill them woot!! Unfortunately my swordsmen fluff their hits and wounds and see them run back through their own detachment. Luckily their not caught as there is still a sizeable amount left.
I shoot yet more White lions reducing them to 7 now, and kill one crew member on a RBT. My magic does little as he managed to get "Dispel magic" and my main life mage is fleeing.
HE Turn Three:
His White Lion's charge my handgunners and loose a few more to shooting but they go on to wipe out the unit and mage however they do only have 3 left. The Reaver's move up to shoot at my mortar crew and do nothing. His Swordmasters charge my great-swords and cleave a massive 16 kills. I believe I manage to take 6-7 with me and remain steadfast, + my stubborn Ld test anyway. His Archers turn and shoot my renaming pistoleers to death. He also kills 1-2 knights taking the unit down to 4 + the AL.
* Unfortunately I am incredibly tired and will have to finish this another day 20am here in UK! With a football match and a small hangover tomorrow I need to hit the bed. The Rest of the report should be up soon.

Empire Turn Four:
I swing my knights round and over the hill to head towards his RBT as I figure I would much rather take Prioirty in destorying them than a remaning unit of 3-5 white lions. I advance my halberdier horde around the hill and towards his archers as this was a better option after my pursuit of Korhil and spearmen.
Combat wise I plug away at a few more swordmasters, but it remains a drawn combat. My Hangunners and mage take 5 kills from the white lions but stay! My Halberdier detach from the swordsmen take 3-4 seaguard but this is not enough and they run.
HE Turn Four:
My Greatswords loose combat by 1, due to a freeking warbanner and are caught and killed by 2 swordmasters, despite me having 8 models left and my WP >_< His swordmasters then crash into the flank of my handgun unit negating a potential stand and shoot. His white lions finally make mince meat out of my left handgun unit and overrun. His seaguard unit try to pursue the swordsmen halberdier detach but fail, however they do catch the fleeing swordmen unit, which I forget you now roll to run away again instead of just die. Still I may well have run off the board anyway!
His 2 ellirian reavers charge my HBR and kill all three crew. Whilst his White lions also charge and kill my mortar.
His magic and shooting are not worth mentioning, I perhaps loose 1 knight.
Empire Turn Five:
My halberdier and detach again march to close the gap with his archers so I can charge on turn 6. My AL and knights charge into his RBT taking heavy damage, I believe the AL is down to 1 wound and all other knights are killed. I rally my swordmen detachment and face them into the marauding seaguard unit.
My remaning handgunner unit gets slaughtered by the two swordmasters and flees out of pursuit range.
I have no magic, and Due to my "Dead pile" being placed over my great cannon I forget to fire it!!!
HE turn Five:
His Seaguard kill what is left of the swordsmen halberdier detachment and sit on the table corner. His 2 swordmasters again charge into my handgunners and kill them outright.
Shooting sees me loose 1 crew member on the great cannon. and a few from my halberdier horde and detachment. Magic is again uneventful with me dispelling everything.
He moves his white lions towards my AL.
Empire Final Turn:
I forget to fire my god-damn Great cannon into his reaver's. Grapeshot here would have been an added game-winner. My halberdier's crash into his archers killing them all including the mage. Whilst my AL finishes off the last RBT. I choose to overrun with my AL to get out of his remaining 3 WL's charge range, unfortunately my dice rolls suck and he plonks right in front of them!!
HE Final Turn:
His reavers charge into my great cannon killing the last 2 crew members, (Once again I forget to stand and shoot here) His white lions charge into my AL killing him and his last wound (I forget I gave him Dawn Armour and forget to re-roll my 3+ save) His white lions then crash into my halberdiers. I use the make way to get my captain into the fight to then get spanked by the white lions and fail my 4++ ward save from holy relic.
I loose by a very very minimal margin.... However I feel I put up a very good fight, especially as this is my second time ever using an Empire army!!!! The forgetfulness may well have cost me the game really which is a bummer, but these are mistakes I won't make next time.
I know this starts with an IF, but "IF I had remembered to shoot my great cannon at his WL and Ellirian reavers, I would have won the game. As he only had 3 WL's and 2 Ellirian reavers left, I am quite certain my Grapeshot would have killed them. Leaving me with my Lord, BSB hero and over half strength halberdier horde + detachment Vs his 2 swordmasters and 13 seaguard.
Like I said that was an IF. Overall it was a very enjoyable game, and I will beat his ass next time!
Thanks for the interest Duke Igthorn, be sure to check out the battle chronicler slideshow to understand the report a little more fluently.

Sounds like a great game - and one that left you thirsting for the next one =P
One thing: You mention a couple of times that he shoots at your Mortar crew - you do know that shots are always reolved against the warmachine itself right? The crew are just removed as wounds counters. I guess its probably just a more colourful way of saying that he shoots at your mortar, but if you did use the crew toughness you've been screwed over
