Battle Report, 2000 pts H. Elfs vs Skaven
My 1st game today vs Skaven went rather oddly with the dice swinging the game one way and then in the other.
1st a breakdown of the lists.
Level 4, with book
BSB, with armour of caledor and GW.
Level 2, with anul crystal.
Champ, Banner and Musician
Banner of Arcane
Banner of Sorcery
19 Pheonix Guard
Skaven, (gear unknown unless revealed)
Greysear on Screaming Bell
BSB – Storm Banner
50 (could have been 40) clan rats
Shield + HW
30 Storm Vermin (pushing Screaming bell)(suspect was due to scenario which resulted in above clan rats coming in as reserve).
6 Rat Ogres + squeek
Poison globe launcher
(as far as im aware a poor army list for skaven, after coming to fear that id face multiple warmachines and gunline).
The game type was where the table is split for corner to corner, Skaven won the roll off and deployed 1st, seeing his Clan rats and Rat Ogres being forced to deploy as reserve.
I deployed next and was lucky enough to see no units forced into reserve.
Turn 1, saw the Skaven move towards my line, the hell pit moving a total 14 inches towards my centre line SCARY! And both his reserves were deployed. Magic saw an impressive start to the game, with a 1st cast irresistible forced Plague. The target my phoenix guard; the result 3 phoenix guard drop dead (long live magic resistance + ward). The spell dissipates doing no further damage, however on his end he rolls the miscast table and rolls a 3. Bam Strength 10 template over his screaming bell and storm vermin, sees the unit reduced to 8 (only cause the entire unit wasn’t under the template). The greyseer escapes harm whilst the SB takes a wound. He then rolls the 4+ needed to keep the Greyseer in the game. Darn!
My Turn 1 sees me charge my SMs into his Rat Ogres. Magic sees a predictable dwellers on Plague monks resulting in an impressive 20 deaths. My shooting is disappointing upon the revelation of his storm banner with both RBTs missing his Hell Abom. Combat: the frustration of it all; my SMs strike the Ogres, resulting in 11 wounds inflicted, however due to squeek (special beast master) his Ogres have regen of 4+. He rolls an amazing 8 sucsessful saves. 1 Ogre dies, their return strike kills 10 SMs OUCH! My SMs bail, (dropping their dam banner) luckily they did not get caught.
Turn 2, his Hell Abom crawls closer to my middle line. His Ogres continue towards my RBTs and Spearmen. His bell crawls forward. Magic; sees another plague, this time he rolls 23 on 6 dice and where u’d expect the H.Elf to beat that my dice sees a shortcoming of 21. This time his plague is pointed at my 30 Spearmen, resulting in about 12 deaths. This then bounces on towards his own Rat Ogres, causing havoc killing another Ogre and 2 handlers; But bounces back again to my spearmen taking another 6 out. (saving 5 with 5+ mag res). Nasty!
My Turn 2, i see that Hell Abom looking terribly close to my line and decide to charge it rather than let it charge me, so I charge with my remaining spearmen (30) block with a coupled charge from my Phoenix Guard into its flank. Magic is mostly a Regrowth on my reformed SMs seeing 5 return along with other supporting spells. Combat: My spearmen and Phoenix Guard give the Hell Pit Abom a silly amount of strikes but much to my horror only sees two wounds suffered by the beast. On his strike back he manages to cream the spearmen killing around 11 in total. I somehow manage to win the round of combat, mainly due to banners, bsb, ranks, charge and flank attack. He holds still i look towards the next round of combat in horror.
His Turn 3, He charges my SMs with his clan rat horde, His Rat Ogre into my spearmen block (20), his remaining monks and storm vermin and bell into my phoenix guard (rear and flank). I’m thinking ive lost at this stage; only to see things completely turn around in the magic phase. Magic; he casts a cpl of failed spells followed by yet another Irresistible force’d Plague. This time he selects my Pheonix Guard, killing 3, this bounces onto my spearmen and reduces their number from 8 to 4. Unfortunately with the Irresistible force comes a Miscast, a roll on the table sees another result of 4. Bam, down goes the strength 10 blast finishing off his Storm Vermin, killing another of my Phoenix Guard and 4 of his monks. This blast results in the Screaming bell no longer being in combat with my Phoenix Guard. (ill add a pic to show what happened here). This time his greyseer doesn’t roll the 4+ needed and is eaten by the Vortex of Magic.
Combat, my SMs kill 12 Clan rats and see only 2 of their own cut down in response. This overkill results in the rats running for it, My SMs fail to catch them. His Rat Ogres fair similarly, my spearmen inflict 6 unsaved wounds, killing 2 Ogres and leaving 2 and Squeek. They kill 4 in return and with the rank bonus and banner find themselfs chased away and down by the Elves. Back to the Abom/monk combat; My spearmen and bsb inflict 2 unsaved wounds on Abom, and my Phoenix Guard inflict another 2, killing it, WAIT he has his roll, which comes up a 5 phew (bullet dodged) 3 rat swarms spawn. My Phoenix guard then also inflict 3 wounds on the monks. The monks kill a further 2 PG, and combat goes my way and from a lost game its total victory.
From that point onwards it was just a point of cleaning up the left overs.
As seen above, and id like some feedback we ended up rolling for it and i won the roll, but tell me what you all think should have happened.
When he charged his bell and SV, he was able to slot against the last rank, the monks then moved and occupied what space they could.
During magic he killed my last rank, and thus was no longer in base to base, he could also not move forward as Bell only had 1 SV left with the BSB. And would not have been able to get closer when he charged anyways due to the Monks cutting off any way of getting at the 3rd Rank.
We asked around club and oppinions were split so we rolled for it.
Nice report its a good read.
Nice decision on the matter of the screaming beel being in combat. Rolling for it shows good sportsmanship!
and it is in the spirit of a game of luck to make decisions with the dice!
