Hall of Heroes Tourney, Saturday August 26
12 points for massacre, 10 for solid, 8 for minor, 6 for draw, 4 for minor loss, 2 for solid loss, nothing for massacred.
First Army of Western Ulthuan
Lvl 4, Silver Wand, Ring of Fury, Scroll x2
Lvl 2, Jewel of Dusk, Ring of corin
commander, Steed, Barding, Heavy Armor, BSB, Battle Banner
commander, lion guard, heavy armor, shield, great weapon
18 Spears wSB, Champ, Lion Standard
5 Silverhelms with Champ
5 Dragon Princes with SB, Banner of Sorcery
2 Bolt Throwers
Game 1: vs Lizardmen
4 Lvl 2 Mages, Diadem of Power, Scroll
2 Units of Scouting Skinks
3 Units of Skinks all with blow pipes
16 ranked skinks
The objective was find and hold. 400 VP for whoever had the most unit strength within the piece of terrain with the objective. It would screw me over in the end.
My first mistake were my lores. I should have taken heavens with the second mage but instead i took fire. With my level 4 I took high magic. Anyways, he took first turn and advanced everything. I proceeded for the next couple of turns to outmagic and out shoot him, wiping out his ranked skinks from flames of the pheonix, his scouts, i put three wounds on his stegadon, and a number of the skinks. finally, we reached htis position:
He got off an irresistable thunderbolt into my silverhelms killed a few, and then the salamanders killed the other two, leaving only the battle banner. So i charged the battle banner into the skinks, and one chariot into the salamanders after weakening them with flames and a bolt thrower. I broke both. the next turn his stegadon charged my spears, who held, the commander whiped out his greatweapon and put another wound on it. The next turn my other chariot and dp charged in and killed it. Unfortunately, even though his main troops were all but wiped out, his terradons had managed to destroy the archers and my level 2 mage. So at the end of turn 5, this is how it looked.
In the top of turn 6 he got a miscast in his magic phase, but it was something silly like a 10, where one of mages lost a wound. Next turn, on two dice, he gets off an irresistable thunder bolt and fries my poor battle banner.
then I was too far away to get to obective, so i had to settle for table quarters, which i got one, and he got two, from a unit of like 6 skinks that managed to rally on ld 5. The kroxigors captured the 400 point objective and another table quarter. I charged one unit of terries with my dp which fled. My rbt needed to kill one terrie at long range get a draw (because it was negating my table quarter) It only inflicted one wound. In the end i lost by 397 points, a minor loss, and a number of things that happened especially in the last round could have changed that to a draw or even a victory for me. I was a little dissapointed that I still lost even though I only lost one combat unit and that one more turn would have probably resulted in at least a solid victory.
my first loss with this list, bringing the list to 8-1.
So, with the knowledge that i wouldnt get close to winning the tourney, I played with less thought and a little more freely. My second game has to be one of most hilarous and entertaining games i ever played. this was directly because of my opponent.
Khal brought a beautifully converted lizzardmen army themed around arabia. what he did was use high elf archers with spears and painted their robes in an arabic way, and painted everyone dark skin. For his saurus he had maurauders with goblin wolf rider shields. He had 2 stegadons, and for terradons, he used pieces of paper and painted them up with high elf archers standing on top of them, like flying carpets. He didnt win best painted, although its a pity he didnt, he got my vote for sure.
Nike Lizard, 18 inch charge 6 st 5 no AS attacks
2 Lvl 2s, 4 scrolls
10 skink scouts
5 swarms (thats right...5 swarm bases, and not the last time today).
He got first turn and advanced his scouts out of the forest to try to blowpipe my rbt, he didnt get anything. Magic was ineffective, everything else moved up. I now saw my problem, I needed my battle banner to get into the flank of the saurus, but the stubborn stegadons would be a problem for me. I quickly formulated a half decent plan which worked, somewhat. I advanced my archers on to the hill just into charge range of the steggie, advanced my spears to flank it when the archers fled. My battle banner ran around hill outside charge range of the saurus. My dragon princes charged (who lost one from the steggie's bolt last turn) charged the skinks, who fled but not far enough and were cut down. after first turn:
His swarms charged my dp in the woods, i stuck around and decided i had to start killing them somehow. his steggie tried the charge my archers, who fled. the saurus moved up. everything else moved up as well. In my turn my spears charged the flank of the steggie, which held barely, as did the dp. my battle banner was marchblocked by the terradons even as I marchblocked his left flank with my eagle. My magic clicked and i get flames off on the saurus killing around 5. In his turn he dispelled it though. I dont know why but my magic didnt do much until the end of the game, maybe cause of the 4 scrolls. Assuming that I wouldnt break the stegadon anytime soon, I put my eagle in a way so that he wouldnt be able to charge my spears. I rallied my archers. after turn 2:
turn 3 was just chaotic for me. he revealed his silly 18inch charge on his saurus and charged a bolt thrower crew, who fled. The terradons charged the other bolt thrower crew who also fled. His other stegadon and saurus moved into a position so that either one could charge the dp next round. I knew they'd be toast despite valiantly cutting down a base of swarms a turn. both of my mages were near the bolt throwers fleeing crew, about one inch from the edge and 4 inches from the nike lizard. Somehow, i broke his stegadon and ran it down with my spears, but not before the steggie killed my commander. In my turn my magic busted the terradons, my battle banner charged the saurus, which fled, I charged the nike lizard with a chariot and passed 4 leadership tests for 2 mages and 2 bolt thrower crew. I cause 2 wounds on his lord, he caused 3 back, tied combat. after turn 3:
turn 4 was a little icky. His stegadon came into charge range of my mages, chariots and rbt. his saurus flanked my dragon princes. In combat his nike lizard finished my chariot. My dp broke, and his saurus did not overrun. his other saurus unit rallied. In my turn I got my mages very far away and spent the whole phase on the lord, he survived 2d6 st4 magic missiles and everything i threw at him, until 5 archers with 4s to hit 6s to wound and a 2+ AS stepped up and killed it off. My battle banner charged the same saurus unit, which fled again. end of turn 4:
From there on my magic took over, too forked lightnings killed his mages. In turn 5 my battle banner charged his last base of swarms, destoryed em, and overran into his saurus, and promptly broke them by winning combat res by 8.
Massacre for me. If i get a massacre in my last game as well, id have a good final ranking.
Game 3: Vc
I played against a vc player who never played against high elves before. His army list was:
Von Carstein, Ring of 4+ ward, 4+ regen
3 lvl 2s
5 dire wolves
10 dire wolves
5 fell bats
12 zombies (dunno why he didnt make em two units of 6)
and to top it all off,
5 Spirit Hosts (uhuh, no typo)
Turn 1: Destroyed his stupid 100pt ring with my ring of corin. Magic reduced spirit hosts to 6 after being hit by fury of khaine, the ring of fury, and fiery blast. All my shooting whiffed. He advanced everything...he cast his dance on his count unit twice which i both let go.
I didnt charge his count unit straight away cuz i had my mages inside the spear unit. so they left, and along with shooting, destoryed 3 fell bats, the small unit of dire wolves and half the vc unit from flames. one chariot charged the large unit of 10 dire wolves and wiped them out. my battle banner charged and autobroke his ghouls. he revived his skellies to 19 before 3 ranks of spears lowerd them to 14. his fell bats bounced off my bolt thrower crew because of higher ground (forgot to include it in the pic) and his banshees killed a knight.
my dp flanked his unit. my battle banner turned to face the spirit hosts. his whole vampire unit crumbled from combat res. and after that everything started to crumble.
In turn 4 his banshees crumbled, his spirit hosts charged my battle banner, bounced because of a 5roll on the bbanner, and in the top of turn 5 2 chariots, dp, battle banner hit the zombie unit in front, reare and flank and simply wiped out the whole unit.
never played an easier game against vc....had no idea how he massacred his first two games.
My final placing was 6th out or 24 people. Top place went to a brett who had two units of pegusii and a lord on pegusii. Second was to a 2nd gen slann. 3rd was the vc player that i defeated in the last tourney i played (he won best painted too). 4th was the lizzie player i lost too in my first round. With one point more then me, 5th place was a woman with a dwarf army...the only dwarf army in the tourney. I dont think she did extraordinarily great in her battles, but she had excellent comp, sports and painting as well (2o out of 18 in sports).
My own list goes to 10-1, but at the moment my main focus is on my fledgling dwarf and sister of battle armies.
cheers, hoped you enjoyd the report and the diagrams.

Yeah i think you did really well, and your army list is really cool...not one of those cheesy ones like that brettonian one. Really good battle reports too, you appear to have mastered the way of the elf!

I don't see how the Brett list is cheesy at all?!
That many pegasus leaves for not many KOTR or KE at all, any empire/dwarven list with any amount of firepower could massacre it by turn 2.
Plus, wityh HE magic they could have easily been blasted away.
People throw about 'cheese' statements so easily today, where the list usually in question can be easily destroyed with a bit of thought and good tactics.
I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That's my dream. That's my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight... razor... and surviving.
Ok maybe it was a bit harsh, but think about all the flank charges/rear charges you can get from flying units, especially when there is 3 of them (i think) and they aren't exactly light hitting (and not all armies have amazing magic or firepower able to destroy 2 or 3 units of pegasus knights on the first turn...). But then again, maybe they aren't all that cheesy, just very powerful in the right hands...(I wouldn't know as i have never fought Bretonnia before, but from the sounds of it they seemed cheesy, i am sorry if i offended anyone by jumping to conclusions...and maybe you are right, people often accuse armies of being cheesy these days...but then again, you do often see a lot of cheesy armies these days...).
Anyways, like i said before, great battle report and i would definately love to see more like it! :w00t:
