After reading all the posts here about how M@A really stink, I thought I would share a bit about my battle last night. I was facing a Blood Dragon army, 2000 pts. I managed a massacre- A lot of that had to do with my M@A!!!
My list has been posted elsewhere, but to recap: 2001 pts
Lord w/ Grail vow, grail shield, lance w/ killing blow (Artois?) and virtue of Confidence
He rides with 8 KE with Errentry banner
BSB War banner
He rides with 8 KOR
Morning star of whatshisname
Armour of Aglilullifforsomething
He rides with another 8 KOR
1 lvl 2 damsel- dispel scroll (she is usually attached to one of the KOR units- sometimes hides behind peasants)
1 lvl 1 damsel- dispel scroll, rides with 5 GK
16 M@A full command
20 skirmish archers w/ no command
OK, so my opponent goes first as usual. He charges ahead. I move ahead just a few inches to stay out of his charge range next turn and to keep even with M@A guarding my left flank of the battle line, archers w/ treb are on extreme left but stay in place.
3PK on right flank. Battle line is like this:
Archers M@A GK KE W/general KOR W/BSB KOR W/paladin PK
On turn two his lord on a dragon charges the GK, and the black coach charges the M@A. Things are not looking good on the left flank! In his magic phase he manages to miscast with his general and knock him out for the turn (automatic hit in cc!). He did get off one spell that killed a PK. Combat with his lord a challenge is issued, and only one GK can fight... I do one wound to the general, dragon manages to do no wounds! Dragon takes 3 wounds from CR! Black coach does even worse! Only two impact hits, none of which wound! Only one wound from the driver- CR causes 3 wounds to the coach! Things are just not going his way due to die rolling. In the end CR kills the black coach, and only two of my M@As die! They then get flank charged by a unit of ghouls. The unit was only 3 models due to the archers knocking them down on the march up-
ghouls fail to wound, M@A cause a wound back- ghouls flee! M@A manage ld test to not pursue (keep battle line intact, and only two ghouls can be killed by 20 archers!).
The KE w/ general charged a unit of 12 black knights, and the two units of KOR charged another unit of 12 black knights. PK flew around back, failed a fear test to charge and got stranded in the back of his zone... Thankfully that was the only fear test failed all game!
CR went seriously the way of Bretonnia, as the lord destroyed a thrall or whatever champion was in his unit with 3 overkill bonus- CR ended up killing like 5 or 6 models plus the 3 that died from combat- leaving all my KE alive and 4 black knights. The other combat (2 units of 9 KOR vs. 12 black knights) was only slightly less effective- bad rolling on my part and the book of something or other that gives -1 on all to hit in 6". Challenge killed another of his characters (a wraith I believe?) and only 2 knights. CR did him in again with all those ranks and the war banner- I forget how many all together but there were only 3 or 4 knights left on his side with one KOR casualty.
Next round saw his vampire lord destroy a GK but only after the GK caused a wound to the dragon. CR saw another wound on the dragon- only one wound left! The lord and his KE destroyed the last of the Black knights (4 left, but the lord with 3 attacks, a unit champion with two and a regular KE caused two wounds, and CR killed the other two). The other unit was doomed just due to CR, but they managed to take out another knight in the process. GK got charged by a unit of 5 ghouls, one wound to the GK and two wounds caused back (pegasus w/ 2 attacks really really helps!). LD 10 they stayed-
last turn of the game and we called it due to time, but the Blood dragon player had only two units left that were over half str ( the lord and dragon, but lord had one wound and dragon only had one left!) and both those probably wound have been reduced to 1/2 str or less if the turn had been completed. I had only taken a few casualties and not one unit was below 1/2 str.
Total casualties on my side: 4 archers, 2 M@A, 2 GK, 1 PK, 1 KE and 2 KOR. He lost both units of 12 knights including two characters, one unit of ghouls reduced from 6 to 2 and another from 5 to 3. His main problem was his dragon lord point sink. In 2000 pt game that combo was 700+ points, yet managed to get hung up in combat the whole game with a single unit of 5 GK. If the GK could hold off for one more turn the Lord and his unit would have gotten a charge in and all would have been done. The archers should have been able to cut down the 2 remaining ghouls, and PK just needed to hold off 3 ghouls as next turn the KOR would have been there to crush them.
The heros of the day were certainly the M@A though- a 100 or so point unit of 16 that managed to destroy a black coach after they got charged, and held off a charge from a group of ghouls as well. All the while only taking two casualties! Had the Black coach broken them (as we both expected!) it would have been in position to flank charge my entire battle line. Peasants save the day for Brettonia. I may modify my list a bit. Possibly drop the trebuchet as this is the second game where it has failed to hit a single enemy model. Only got to shoot on turn one and two as by turn 3 every enemy model was in CC...
I may drop it and and another unit of M@A or make the existing unit 25 or so storng and and add a few points to other things here and there. I also realise I should run a champion with some big nasty killing power with the GK, but in 2000 points there just aren't any heroes to spare unless I drop a damsel. That could be a good idea as this is the second game in a row with almost no spellcasting on my part. I managed to get one spell off on turn one and that was it.
Any thoughts or comments?
i got a comment this should be in the battle report section
"take my love, take my land, take me to where i cannot stand, i don't care i'm still free you can't take the sky from meee" ;- firefly
"i'm gonna grant you your greatest wish i'm gonna show you a world without sin" ;- serentiy
"I am a leaf on the wind, watch how i soar" ;- serenity
Yeah they rock. Most people say they suck because they need an excuse to take the cheesy all knight list. I mean how can 5 point models with a 4+ AS in close combat) that can strike at STR 4 is you want them to (only 6+ AS then) and have a banner that doesn't give you opponent victory points suck?????? I mostly played High Elves until now and I would kill for 5 point infantry like that!!!
Well I had another game this weekend and I will say that once again the M@A and this time my peasant bowmen both ROCK!
I was facing a skaven ultra shooty/magic heavy army, and he kept saying how he didnt want to be a pincushion, so he spent two turns throwing a ton of stuff at the PB> a unit of 20 was in two turns down to 8 models. They managed not to panic due to a well placed knight unit... then the large block of infantry moving forward caused him some concern (even though the knights were within charge range on my next turn and the M@A were not). He wasted a ton of shooting & magic for 3 turns on my two cheapest units. Yeah they took a lot of casualties, but all that attention would have been much worse for my knights. Not sure what he was thinking with all that attention at a couple of units that are only 100 or so pts each vs. my 200+ pt units of knights. I managed to get 4 out of 6 units of knights into CC full strength! Let me do that and it is pretty much my game!
Somehow the large blocks of peasants seemed to cause him much concern... they are half the models in my army, yet account for only ~15% of the points...
I actually managed to hit a couple units with the trebuchet this game. My guess has gotten much better!
