He wins the first turn.
His beastherd with the general is unruly and has to move as fast as possible to the closest unit. The rest advances and I am pissing my pants by now. Not looking good for my skellies against this.
First spell kills 4 wolves (as everyone he is mean to my doggies)
Second spell is a miscast with his general and he rolls a 3 on the miscast table. He and everyone in BtB takes a STR5 hit. The general takes a wound. Bastard is in a skirmishing unit so nobody else get hit.
Then one of his shamans casts steeds of shadows on herself and teleports in the middle of my line. Followed by a Crown of Taidron with irresistible force. This kills the lone wolf, 4 more wolfs in another unit , 3 wounds on a unit of fell bats and 7 or 8 skellies (total) in 3 units. He uses unseen lurker to charge his hounds into my wolves. I dispel the other unseen lurker spell. Another magic missile hits more wolves and I finally dispel bears anger on his lord. I didn't want him to have 7 STR 7 attacks with hatred.
No shooting (thank god)
Combat: War hounds do 3 wounds and take no in return, wolves crumble and warhound overrun to the edge of the board.
VC turn 1:
Wow, haven't moved a thing and I have barely any wolves left.
Movement. With him thundering down on me and blasting me with magic (15 power dice VS 5 dispel dice). I have 2 models that can fight and the rest is just WS 2 or 3 and STR3. (ok I have a black coach but I was expecting to lose it early with tons of STR7 around). So I have to remove some of his fighty units and magic.
So my wounded bats charge his shaman who fails it's fear test and runs through a unit of skellies. There's 2 less power dice. But still 13 is a lot. So next is my desperation move. I charge my flying vampire out of his unit into the beast herd with the general. I figure he can't get ranks with a single model attacking him and I could win it. Then I charge my bats into the other beast heard hoping to kill the bray shaman there.
The coach hangs back while the last decent unit of wolves blocks the dragon ogres and if they charge the wolves that will be a flank charge with the coach in the dragon ogres. The last wolf on the other side sets up so it protects the flank of the skellies from the Shaggoth.
I try to raise a new unit of skellies with my vampire and passes but I don't raise enough. My 2 necros both try too and raise skellies and it fails /dispelled. Then he has 1 dispel dice left and I use the book of Arkhan. He fails to dispel on a 2. WOOT!!!!!! The vampires original unit is now able to join the vampire in the battle.
Shooting: none (no shooting in the whole game so I’ll stop mentioning)
Bats fail to wound the shaman and crumble. His general issues a challenge and I accept with my skellie champion. Skellie champion dies and my vampire kills 4 beasts and with outnumber fear causer. They run and go 9”. The flying vampire runs 8” and the slow skellies go 10”. I cut down his general and unit and panic a unit of war hounds.
So I managed to remove 6 power dice and one nasty fighty unit in turn 1. Pretty good turn around. Now my opponent is starting to sweat.
Beasts turn 2:
2 units of war hounds leave the field (1 fails to rally and 1 fails terror check from the coach)
Shaggoth charges the lone wolf, dragon ogres charge wolves beast herd charges flank of skellies that ran down the general. Minotaurs charge thralls unit of skellies. I am not in the clear as my general is by himself and there are still 9 power dice around. His Tzaangors turn around to help out in the back field.
He casts a magic missile on my vampire and I fail to dispel. 3 hits and 1 wound. Phew! Now he casts unseen lurker on the Tzaangors and I can’t stop it. He’s charging the Tzaangors into the vampire (auch 3 ranks, outnumber, banner – I’m doomed). But fails his fear test…..WOOT!!!
Beast herd kills 4 skellies and crumbles another 5. Now my general can see the beast herd. Shaggoth kills wolf and dragon ogres kill wolves and overrun into ghouls. Mino’s kill a skellie (cursed book near) and thrall kills a mino. Mino’s run and get way.
VC turn 2:
Here’s where I made my big mistake that cost me the game. I charge my vampire into the beast herd that is in the flank of the skellies. I figure I can kill enough so they can’t attack the skellies and then win combat with outnumber. However my opponent was too smart. He issues a challenge with his champion any my vampire has to accept. Thrall and unit charge last unit of war hounds. I hope they fail their LD5 fear test and run so I can hit the flank of the Tzaangors but they pass.
I create a new unit of skellies to block any charge from the Tzaangors and get 5 skellies.
The vampires combat does not go well. I kill the champion but the herd kills several skellies and I lose combat by 3. My vampire crumbles. My black coach charges into the flank of the dragon ogres and does 6 impact hits and 6 wounds none of which were saved. The remaining ogre kills 2 ghouls and the ghouls do another wound. I run the ogres down. Thrall and skellies kill all but 1 war hound and I have to pursue (hatred). This makes the fleeing mino’s run again and crash into the 5 new skellies and are destroyed.
Crumble checks all around. The new unit of 5 skellies crumbles completely. Some skellies in the combat with the herd crumble, one bat dies, coach takes a wound (down to 10 wounds) and he rest is fine.
Beast turn 3:
Tzaangors charge thrall’s unit and fail their fear check (they are getting good at that). Mino’s charge coach in the flank. Shaggoth repositions to party with my necro’s.
Unseen lurker on Tzaangors to charge them into thrall’s unit. It gets of and they fail their fear test!!!! Violet fire on the thrall and gets it off. Thrall fails leadership on a 9 and is now a demon in the realm of chaos (scary thought).
Herd finishes of skellies, mino’s can’t wound coach and coach doesn’t wound either and lose by 2 (8 wounds left)
VC turn 3:
Crumble checks – lose a lot of skellies on the thralls old unit (ld 3 without thrall)
2 more wounds on coach.
Movement: Thralls old unit is charging Tzaangors and they pass their fear test (finally). Bat charges herd and herd fails fear test so needs 6’s. Necro unit manages to get out of Shaggoth’s charge arch. Ghouls and banshee move closer (been hiking the whole time). Ghouls by coach move around to flank of mino’s fighting coach.
Cast 8 skellies behind Tzaangors. Then add another 10 to that. And another 10. Fail to get them to charge the rear of the Tzaangors.
Tzaangors and skellies draw combat (thought that was impossible but Tzaangors could only kill 1 skellie). Coach does a wound but loses it again to combat res. Mino’s still can’t wound it. Bat needs to do 2 wounds and does none and crumbles. 2 combat res wounds on coach (6 left)
Beasts turn 4:
Shaggoth charges into the flank of the skellies fighting the Tzaangors. Herd move toward the necro units. Nothing else to move.
3D6 STR 1 hits on skellies does nothing – unseen lurker on herd to charge necro’s unit. Gets off but they fail their fear check.
Shaggoth and Tzaangors rip through skellies and kill the whole unit. Shagot overruns 2” (shouldn’t this have been 3D6?). mino’s still can’t hurt the coach (finally a wound but it is saved) but combat res does another 2 wounds. (4 left).
VC turn 4:
Crumble tests. Lose lots of skellies on new unit again. Coach takes 2 wounds (2 left) banshee takes a wound.
Movement. Skellies, ghouls and banshee charge rear of Tzaangors. Other ghouls are charging mino’s fighting coach. Necro’s move towards Tzaangors to get the cursed book close.
Magic: increase size of skellies behind Tzaangors, fail to cast curse of years on herd and move necro’s closer to Tzaangors with book (but only 1 model is effected).
Forget to scream with banshee.
Skellies kill a Tzaangor and ghouls and banshee don’t. Tzaangors lose and get overrun. Shaggoth panics and runs (pussy!) Ghouls kill a mino and no wounds in return. Mino’s hold.
Beast turn 5:
Shaggoth rallies. Shaman leaves herd.
Magic: 3D6 STR 1 kill last 3 skellies in necro’s units and the 2 necros are now on their own. Banshee gets blasted too.
Combat: moni’s kill 3 ghouls. 1 wound left on coach. Ghouls run.
VC turn 5:
More skellies crumble.
Skellies charge herd and herd flees.
Magic: create more skellies. Create a new unit of 11 skellies to cut the herd if they don’t rally in beasts turn.
I think I messed up with the coach wounds in this report but it’s still at 1 wound at the end of this turn.
Beasts turn 6:
Shaggoth charges ghouls, ghouls run and get cut down. Herd rallies – Damn!!
Mino’s wound coach but it saves. Does not wound in return and crumbles!
VC turn 6:
The unit of 11 skellies reduces to 5 and the other unit of skellies takes a few casualties. Necro’s are fine (at this point the 2 necro’s are the only 2 models from my original list left on the table. All skellies are raised ones.)
Skellies charge Shaggoth in the flank. 5 Skellies reposition to charge shaman in magic phase.
Add more skellies to unit fighting shaggoth. Curse of years on herd but only kill 2 so no panic check. He dispels the movement spell.
Combat. Skellies don’t do anthing against Shaggoth (surprise, surprise). Shaggoth kills a bunch but loses combat by 2 (I had 3 ranks flank and outnumber). He holds and the game is over.
Beasts won by 500 points. I needed the shaggoth to run as it would have given me the draw. Alas. Great game though.
Thanks for the report Sylvester, I enjoyed that
Shame that you got blasted by magic before you even had a chance to move any troops, but I guess that's the way it goes sometimes against Tzeentch ^_^
Its too bad cause if you hadn't lost your general you would likely have one. You lost a lot to crumble checks. Great game none the less but its a good lesson in keeping your general alive.
Nevermore Chapter: 6200 pts; 97/49/11; Longest Streak: 9 Wins/4 Losses; Nearing Completion
I think it's a better lesson that VC are not lost without their general. Too many times I see VC players give up when they lose their general.
