I was just wondering whether there was any ruling on whether you have to reveal what upgrades or magic items characters have? I have a friend who prefers to know "because it sucks to lose a game to some cheese trick", but others reckon it adds a bit of unpredictability which they like.
So who's right?
You must reveal wysiwyg items, and by reveal I mean clarify.
There are magic items in the game that you have to pay for to make your opponent reveal his magic items and other such things.
It doesn't make sense to reveal them for free.
If your opponent requests to see something in your army book though you must show him/her however. You might even learn something yourself too.
Like it was mentioned; there are several items that reveal magic items that the enemy has if your opponent gets your army list then whats the point of these items?

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
Its really up to you. Generally it's done so that any Mahgic items in the army are kept secret until they are required for use or made to be revealed by the enemy.
Most standard wargear selections, like Great Weapons, shield, etc are usually visable on the model.
i'm of the opinion that you dont have to tell the opponent that you have a magic item until you use it. That is what i expect from my opponent and is how we generally play here. But i have seen some error in people giving the same items to 2 different people . so i think this way only really works if everyone is experienced enough not to make silly errors or cheat

I wouldn't expect to see my opponents army list before a battle. I assume what I see on the field is what is there, unless my opponent has specified "this unit has shields but there aren't any on the model, is that ok? ".
I would never expect to see what magic items they are carrying, they may only want to see to work out how many dispel scrolls you have etc. It can be done to be quite dishonest.

Typically, I try to run my entire list as WYSIWYG with the exception of characters, but if asked, I'll explain what mundane counterpart my characters are toting. So if someone said, 'Tell me about your Tomb King.', I'd probably say 'He's got heavy armor and a spear.'
Seasoned TK players could confer from this that my King has the Spear of Antarhak and either Armor of the Ages, or Scorpion armor as the mundane counterparts of spear and heavy armor cannot normally be taken. Or I might say 'He's got a hand weapon and shield and light armor in his chariot'. This could mean just that, or he might have a sword of might, enchanted shield, and a flaming chariot.
Thanks for clearing that up. As was mentioned we do reveal what mundane weapons and armour characters have, as well as special rules, in case it's not obvious. I like MobiusPrime's way of letting them know in a roundabout way. Very cunning :shifty:
What about for talisman and the like? Do you say "My liche is carrying a jar"? Or "My Scar Veteran has a necklace shaped like a jaguar"? In my opinion those should be revealed when the time comes.
Sure you might not want to lose to some cheese trick but learning to expect said cheese tricks and plan on them occuring is a part of the game.
What are these "cheese tricks?" Do real armies sit down with each other before the brawl and compare equipment and tactics? "Alright, we're setting up an ambush for you over here, and don't come too close to these guys, they have poison weapons. Their commander is carrying something to 'light things up with' too."
I've met one player who wanted to know about magic items and I flat out refused. He also liked to over guess with his cannon, but that's another story.
To me, it doesn't sound like fear of losing to a cheese trick is the real reason to want magic items out in the open, but rather, to get a sneaky, slimy edge.
I suppose though, that they are sharing what magic items their characters have.
Perhaps some(most?) items are more powerful, potentially, when kept secret till the moment of use. I like the surprise myself when my foe pulls a rabbit out of his hat, which proceeds to bite the heads off all my knights. Adds to the dynamic.
