Okay after a turn of combat a battle looks like this between Ogres = O and
Treekin = T.
After combat the Treekin win and the Ogres pass their break test. The Treekin can now peform a change formation to maximise. My understanding of change formation is that you move guys from the back rank to the front. As the treekin cannot do this do theystay as they are or do they shuffle to the left so that all Treekin and Ogres fight next round?
You should always maximise the number of models which can fight anyway. If there was nothing taking up the ____ space before the combat started (i.e after the charge or previous combat round was completed) then the units should be aligned. Even if there was something in the ____ space, just them move the other unit across.
Nothing in the rule book allows the treekin to get more models in. However, everywhere I have ever played and at least form my impression on forums almost everybody either requires the winner to slide over at the end of the first round or just lines them up fully if the charge succeeds.
1: All battle lines are fully maximized at the time the charge hits,
2: The charging unit maximizes the number of its own models in combat at the time the charge hits, but does not need to 'over-engage' offering more defenders hits back
3: The charger slides to maximize the battle line at the end of the first round of combat
All are valid weightings of the 'situation we should aspire to' from the FAQ vs the rules from the book
Just warning OP he might get some funny looks in an unfamiliar venue if he grabs his regiment and slides it along the battle line to get more hits in at the 'incorrect' time =) (or may be expected to do so by a new opponent when he had other plans in mind for his overrun path.)
''Sliding'' units across to maximise numbers in combat isnt a house rule, its in the main rulebook.
1 min, lemme get the ref...
Edit: Page 21, on the right. Carries onto pg22, and then the website. Just going to look up the web examples.
Edit: -> see the online errata, the final 3 pages of it sore out charging rules. Ok so they arent set in stone, but they are extensions to the rulebook, highly recommended to be used in a game in order to keep play fair and balanced.
