I haven't touched Warhammer in over 15 years. My brother and I decided to get back into it, even though we both sold all of our stuff years ago. When we were looking at what armies to go with we couldn't decide how we needed to go about it. We have the rule books, and read through the 7th Edition book and I also read through the Dwarf book. My question is this: Do we need to pick opposing armies? I did not see any guidelines for which armies can attack what other armies.
Also, is there a master list somewhere of which armies are Destruction and which are Order? Most of them are obvious, but looking though the rulebook I could not ascertain what all of them were.
There is no governing rules as to which armies can fight or which cant. You can play whatever you like
If you strictly want to stick to the fluff then there are some armies which would be less likely to fight (Brets vs Wood Elves) but even they may get angry sometimes lol.
As Phoenix said, you can have Dwarfs fighting Dwarfs if you want.
As for a list, no there isn't. Here is a list from what I recall:
Warriors of chaos
Beasts of chaos
daemons of chaos
Neither (either because they fight anyone, or sit territorially shooting anyone who gets too close *coughWoodElvescough*)
Orcs and Goblins
Note that the last two are arguable I guess.
In the rich tapestry that is the Warhammer world, armies have fought each other on numerous occassions. Men and Elves have come to blows, Elves and Dwarves have come to blows, Dwarves have at times fought against men (though generally not the Empire proper vs Dwarves, more likely rogue generals, Dogs of War, Border Princes or Bretonnia).
High Elves could conceivably have been attacked by Wood Elves, though given the first contact was when Finubar visited them before ascension to the throne, there probably hasn't been much opportunity, though once again, I can see a particulalry arrogant High Elf lord trying to impose his will on the denizens of Athel Loren, bringing them back into the fold of the Phoenix Crown...
And the Lizardmen will pretty much attack anyone (except perhaps the High Elves) that tries to steal their treasures - and given Dwarves have a greed for gold that is caused by the effects of chaos on their race, this would be an ideal scenario..
Thanks everyone, you saved us a lot of money. We were all set to order 2 armies each so we could battle each other on both sides
Indeed, there are no restrictions at all on who vs who. You can have bretonnia vs bretonnia if you like, or whatever matchup you guys end up picking. As for Order and Destruction, I am guessing you may have gotten these from Warhammer Online. Please note that these are completely artificial alliances built for the backstory of the game, specifically so that there could be 2 sides, and different races could band together.
As a side note, the more you play the game, the more likely you will both end up with 2+ armies anyways
Lol - and make sure that you play with each other's armies as well, to keep things fresh. I use the Mrs vampire counts army whenever not playing my own High Elves (I like the VC models as well, so bargain!)
