Just a query as far as unit frontage goes , would it be within the rules to run my heavy cavalry unit 7 wide? one rank? is there any impracticalities i should be aware of with this formation?
Nope, nothing wrong here. I actually do this all the time with my heavy cav as it allows them to make more attacks. I wouldn't go any more then 7 wide as it is a waste. Only thing to watch out for is it you get flanked or a bolt right down the side.
you could have 48 wide if you really want. but ya anything over 7 is impractical.

Depends on the scale of the battle, but a cavalry squadron of 6 wide is generally regarded as optimal, as then you can get all models attacking against an infantry unit with a frontage of 5. If you are fighting Orcs or Chaos, I'd go with a 7 wide unit, as the 25mm square bases can then be corner-cornered by the additional 2 cavalry on each side.
I would opt for a unit with 8 models, to cover casualties.
If your cavalry is used for flanking, anything more than 5 models wide is nromally a waste.

I would recommend 6 wide for cavalry, as this is the usual best ratio you get with attacks.
You could even consider running them 5 wide, if you don't want to risk being in contact with 2 or more enemy units, e.g. if you're facing a compact line of infantry blocks.
It's better, it's shiny, it's warped...it's Chaos.
