Playing a 4k point game on Thursday, should we use the standard 4X6, or go up to a 4x8. What do you guys use?
I played a 5k game on the standard 4x6 table and it was fine. As long as it isn't horde armies, like skaven vs empire, you should be fine.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
I think what tends to happen as you go up in points is that you end up using up most of the extra points on the bonus characters you get. So you really don't add too many more bulky units to the field(one core/1000 is not much). That being said I usually use a 4x8 table when we play anything more than 3000 pts.
I've played enormous games before. Really, until about 5k, you can stick to a standard table. Also, if you DO choose to make the table bigger, you should consider something: are you really playing a 'battle' on a wider table, or are you playing several smaller battles? Warhammer is a linear game, most units just end up fighting something almost directly in front of them. On a wider table, the regiments at one end, are almost entirely independent of the regiments on the other end. Sure, the odd cannon, mage, dragon, or lucky roll across the flank might have the range to connect the tables together, but you're probably best off playing with just one table.
On the other hand, I recently hosted a massive game with "meatgrinder" Empire and Brettonians against Vampire Counts, that encompassed a roughly 10' by 10' area of floor. But even that had the feel of a small campaign, with several independent battles breaking out for strategic locations and objectives.
Its going to be 2000 points combined wood elf/ chaos warriors against about 4000 points of dwarfs. As the wood elf player, I feel the same way about table size that I do about woods, you can never have to much. But, I really don't see Dave (dwarf player) maneuvering to much. He tried that in the last game and got beat up pretty bad. It was his first game with his new dwarfs. Looks like I'll keep the table to 4x6. Thanks for the input.
