I have a question regarding unit formations, characters and unit strength.
A lot of time when I see WFB army lists, they'll have units like:
(lord goes in warriors)
sense the lord takes up a position in the front rank, why take all twenty warriors? why not take 19 and save some points? dose the unit not get the rank bonus or does the hero not add to the units unit strength or something? what am I missing here? help a confused player out
He does count the same for the purposes of unit strength and ranks. I often field 18 bestigors and have my lord and BSB join them to make them 20 strong to get the full rank benefits.
But there are reasons to taking a unit of 20 strong.
1) Gives more models you can remove as casualties from shooting/magic while you are crossing the battlefield.
2) If you have a unit 19 strong, it is a really clear indicator that a character will be joining that unit, so the opposing player will deploy their forces with that in mind. Having 20 stong will prevent this, as well as it allows you to not be forced to deploy your lord with them if you see he could be more benificial elsewhere after the rest of the units have been deployed.
20: 1 kill = missing rank bonus, your just asking to be shot at by some shortbow pansies
21: double the kills for effect
