In a nutshell: if the rider of a monstrous mount is slain in a challenge, is the monster still in the challenge?
I ask because there's a OK item that heals wounds when it kills an enemy "in a challenge", and healing after killing the rider and then healing after killing the dragon as well would be nice. Finally, theoretically, can you get +5 overkill on a rider and its mount for +10 total?
You can only get +5 overkill from any one challenge each round - and as I don't think you can challenge a rider-less monster, you'd have to kill the monster first, and then the rider the turn after (giving you 2 +5 bonuses rather than 1 +10)
If you kill the rider, you are still in a challenge with the mount, until the end of that combat phase. Next combat phase will revert to just a regular combat. And realitycheque is correct about +5 being the maximum overkill bonus.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
