What would happen if you had a character with the shard in a unit of rank&file troops who had ward saves? Because wounds aren't allocated to specific models, do they all have to re-roll, or can you say the models that were wounded weren't in B2B contact?
I think if the character with the shard is attacking, it's safe to say they have to reroll the saves. Otherwise, I'd just assume they don't, as more of the unit won't be in BSB with the character than will.
That's not necessarily true, imagine 2 units of 5 wide. One has the character with the shard in the middle of it's unit. It is in B2B with 3 enemy models. All other models in the front rank of the shard-unit would this way be in corner to corner with a rank&file affected by the shard.
This is about enemy models though, about friendly.. I wouldn't really know. If the enemy models are only in B2B with rank&file models affected by the shard ( like if they were in front of the shard character, but choose to attack the unit ), those wards should be rerolled.
What I plan to use is 5 rat ogres ( 3 wide ) with skaven warlord on rat ogre bonebreaker with the shard in the middle. He'd touch 4 rank&file models, which usually is almost the entirety of the enemy front. How to resolve?
In any case the supporting attack(s) of the model(s) behind the character benefit from the shard. The models and supporting models next to the character.. I do not know either, as they are, as you said, not allocated. Resolving this is a pain. A good mid-way solution would be that of the attacks that are in B2B with a shard-affected model and a non-shard-affected model, you force only half of the inflicted wounds to reroll the wardsaves.
you ONLY! re-roll sucessfull ward saves of models in B2B with the wearer its got nothing to do with any otehr factor
/= Shard holder
in the above 2 friendly and 3 enemy would have to re-roll sucessfull ward saves as they are in B2B with the wearer it has no other effect.
if it was
then its 3 enemy 5 friendlys who re-roll.
2 Enemy 3 freindly re-roll the shard is more dangerous to friendly than enemy troops as its Any Model in base to base contact and there is no other factor involved in who re-rolls a sucessfull save other than that.
as to the original question wounds are taken fromt he front rank but models move forward to fill the gap this is why you remove models form the back rank.

This was clear ( to me, anyway ), the problem is, when the rank&file strike we roll all of those attacks at once, yet some of the enemy rank&file that their attacks hit are in B2B with the shard holder, and some are not. How do you resolve this? How do you figure out which ones must reroll their wardsave and which ones must not? In your post some of the o's are in B2B with multiple X's. Some of the X's are, and some are not in B2B with the shardholder. Rank and file usually just direct their attacks on the entire enemy unit, and do not target models specifically.
Imho, if all striking rank and file models could attack a model under the shards effect, reroll all successful ward saves, if not all get in range, resolve the attacks of models that can't reach for an effected enemy seperately from the rest. Makes the most sense, since soldiers can reasonably be expected to know what advantages their leader is carrying, and would naturally try (or even be ordered) to exploit those.
The Silver Knights of Tor Adrac (He): 26/2/4
The Spears of Slaanesh (Woc): 7/2/5
Battlegroup Chalybso (GK): 7/3/3
I spose that does make the most sense, I'll just position the models beneficially to me i.e.
[S] being the shard character, [C] the champ and the [n] rank&file. That way only the character and the champ are effected, and any attacks allocated to the champ won't carry over. So kinda win
