Okay, interesting situation here (for me at least):
I'm playing Warriors of Chaos, and vs Dark Elves.
The situation is a 50 strong unit of Marauders with a BSB and Festus are going up against a unit of Spearmen with a Sorceress char in it. Well, my BSB automatically challenges the Sorc, she declines and moves to the back of the unit. Meanwhile my BSB and Festus are focused on by the spearmen and eventually die, and while I do win combat thx to MoK and Greatweapons, the Sorc in the back of the spearmen unit has the crown of command, which is meant to make the unit stubborn. And we played it that way.
The question is: Does the unit still benefit from the effect of the Crown of Command on the SOrceress even if they can't use her leadership due to her refusing a challenge? Because it basically made it so his character was untouchable at the back of a stubborn unit while mine fell in the first round of combat.
yes, the crown of command is still in effect even if the character who holds it get's send to the back rank.
remember tho, if You issue a challenge and your enemy refuses, YOU get to pick which of his characters gets send to the back.
also he has to move his character who refused the challenge back into the front rank next combat phase, giving you the oppotunity to strike him.
Q: Must a character be moved to the front rank of a unit as soon
as a space becomes available? (p100)

Now now lads. This is a forum about grown men playing with toy soldiers. Lets be adults please.
Vanish has answered your question. I would just like to point out that you can't issue a challenge at a particular character. You issue the challenge, and the opponent can select who will accept the challenge between characters and unit champs. If the challenge is refused, you pick who goes to the back rank, though it can't be a champion.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
gotcha, thanks guys, and in this situation there was no other char or champion, just the spearmen and the sorceress. But I will remember to mention that only one challenge per close combat can be issued.
