rules say they can't have their bases touching, and they can't be more then 1" apart. does this mean i can't rank them up like a non-skirmishing unit or does that mean i literally have to keep spaces in between them. and i need more of an answer then 'try to avoid it, but if some are touching it doesn't matter', as i plan to have a unit of skirmishers 'ranked' together for the better part of the game and want to know how dense i can pack them.

that's the thing about perfection, it can only get worse.

The only rule that applies here is on p. 115 of the BRB:

"Models in a skirmishing unit are positioned up to 1" apart so that they are not touching each other."

So therefore, you can rank them up in any way you like as long as you are within the above rule's stipulations. This means that you can rank them up much like a rank and file unit as long as their bases are not touching each other and are less than 1" apart.

Hm,didnt know they HAD to be not touching. Theres a guy in my gaming group who puts his beast herds on movement trays like a ranked unit. Never thought about it till now, since as a fellow beastplayer i know how annoying it is to move all those individual models

i assume it's more of a guideline. i'm kinda tweeking the rules, so i'm being good about it. if it's something that doesn't matter like movement, as long as the non-beastmen player doesn't say anything i'm sure it doesn't matter.
