I hope the moderator is not going to smite me for this:ninja: , but I was just wondering if someone could verify how pikes work. I gather some DoW units get them, and I'm scared they are going to destroy my Chaos dudes.
Do they function like spears? I read something that suggested four ranks can fight though, which sounds a bit broken if you ask me.
Cool, thanks dude! That certainly helped, though I can't say I like the answer
20 attacks, before the chargers! Ouch!
I assume magic items with "strikes first" still do so.
I have fought against pikes and they don't worry me as long as you engage them with the right unit. If you charge them with say Chaos warriors [heavy armour + shield] then out of 20 attacks they will hit 10 times, wound maybe 4 and you should save 2. So they do 2 wounds then you unit wipes them out. If you have Chaos armour then they will be lucky to do 1 wound. DON'T charge them with light cav! If you play it right they die well.
Yeah, Pikes aren't quite as scary as they first seem. They do fight in four ranks, but I thought they only struck first against cavalry?! I could be wrong, I've never used Pikes before. The main problem I see with pikes is although the weapons are awesome (can you imagine Chaos Warriors with Pikes?! ), the troops using them are crap (WS3, S3, 6+sv, etc). Some of the Regiments of Renown pike units are slightly better, I think there's one who's troops are WS4, but basic pike units are such poor quality, the weapons are effectively wasted on them.

"Peace, through superior firepower."
I looked it up and the do almost always strike first, the extra against cavalry (and chariots and monsters) is that they receive a strength bonus in the turn they're charged
Only those units/characters that strike first due to some ability/item/whatever do strike before the pikes (this in turn makes the Helm of many Eyes and the Whip of Pleasure more interesting)
Yeah, I can see what you mean about the sub-optimal troops that wield them. Thanks for pointing that out :shifty:
