here was teh situation:
Blood Dragon VC vs. Cult of Slaanesh (me)
VC has a unit of 7 knights + BloodDragon Lord that charges into my unit of 20 DE spearmen with my Druchii Anointed. He naturally issues a challenge that i accept. through resolution he causes my spearmen to auto break because of fear. However, our lords are still duking it out. his knights persue and overun my spearmen.
should've my lord fled even though stuck in a challenge?
if he should've stayed (which is what we did) is the combat still considered a duel? (for purposes of charging into it with another unit to assist or cast spells on it etc.)
and if you were curious my anointed MOPPED the Blood Dragon up in the second turn of the challenge :w00t:
I would say given that wounds caused in a challenge count towards combat resolution that if the unit breaks and flees that the character goes with them and shares their fate.
Helper monkey, bring me beer and donuts
The character is joined to the unit. Whatever the unit does, so does the character. Put another way, if you had accepted with the unit champion, and he has survived, he wouldn't have left the unit to stay in the challenge. Also in 7th ed, you just move the two characters into BTB in the units and fight the challenge there, at no point do you actualy pull the characters out of the unit (except if it makes this easier for you visualize and keep track of, but it has no effect on the mechanics of it).
well, that would have changed the game all together lol!!
thanks for the clarification.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
yea.. i managed to bait 3 of his units with my Dark riders which left them waaay far away from his general (so he couldnt march with em anymore)
with 3 units out of my hair i was plowing his other stuff with my chaos warrior unit... if he would have killed my anointed it still would have been a really close game i think.
