Thanks to the new rules that mounted characters that join units of infantry can't be picked out anymore, it makes mounting characters a very playable option. Considerably good for orc who get a +2 for mounting on a boar (I'm pretty sure of this.)
This is easy to implement with 25mm square infantry troops because the cavalry model is 25x50mm. It fits well. However, what if you join a character on a cavalry base to a unit of infantry that is on 20mm square bases? It would make the formation a little off.
Any help would be much appreciated.
My solution would be to make the cavalry base a little longer and wider (up to 40x60mm).
If the cav base is too wide then I'd have no problem with ranking the front rank as normal- with the character in place- and then lining up the rear models with the ones in front. You might end up with a little gap between the file behind the character and the one next to it but it shouldn't really matter. Even if the second rank was involved in combat, with spears say, then you could still use the front rank to calculate whom who would attack and the exact positioning of the 2nd and further back ranks wouldn't really matter.
Hope this helps!
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
