Not really a rules question, but I think its close enough.
Is it acceptable to put skirmishers on round bases. Sometimes I think that the square bases are just too clunky.
I understand taht the squares are important for CC, but it's just a thought.
That isn't okay...
I wouldn't even allow it in friendly games, and I am very loose with these things.

personally i wouldnt mind in a friendly game if my opponent used round bases on skirmishing models, but in a more competitive context i can see why people wouldnt allow it.

Round bases would make it look like LOTR or 40k. It isnt either of them, its Warhammer.
I would not allow this at all. No way!!

The Warhammer combat system relies on models being on square bases to work out who can hit who. Round bases would make this more difficult and uncertain. I wouldn't disallow it outright if someone had models on round bases that they wanted to use, but I would make sure that they would concede to me any disputes as to who could hit who.
Really though, all models you intend to use for Warhammer should be on square bases (of the appropriate size of course).
"Peace, through superior firepower."
And as far as 40k round bases go, they're 25mm. If you're trying to base Wood Elves (for example), you're putting them on the wrong base size.
It's best to stick to square bases - it makes life a lot simpler.

Having the proper base size and shape can be important for:
- Who hits who in CC (although if you know the proper base size, you can reason this out. 5 20mm can be hit by up to 7 20mm guys, etc, etc.).
- Determining LOS for charges, shooting. This is important, and hard to figure out without direct visual cues.
- Determining who is completely covered and who is partially covered by attacks with templates. This can be vitally important for skirmishers, who are less prone to infantry missle attacks, and template weapons can be effective ways to deal with them. This is also spatially based, and needs to be looked at rather than computed.
So I say stick with the correct base sizes.

Okay, thanks guys.
I hadn't used the round bases yet, and I don't intend to. It was just a thought.
