Playing my first game ever of WHFB with a Bretonnian army VS Dwarfs reinforced with some Kislev Horsemen (Fast cavalry) we came upon a interesting situation.
I charged the Kislevs with my Questing Knights + Paladin. I had to issue challenge due to my Virtue but crappy dicerolls gave nothing from that. The rest of my knights slaughtered the Kislev unit but the Hero held fast due to his Stubborn. His next round he challenges me and I can't refuse (Virtue and didn't want to lose Blessing). Challenge gave nothing due to crappy dicerolls (which the whole battle was full of) and the stubborn Hero held fast (Ld . That fun little thing happened over and over again until fourth turn when he finally botched his Break-roll!
I couldn't refuse his challenge and my crappy dicerolling (and his good armour saves) meant I didn't killed him which in the end stopped my 8 Questing Knights dead in their tracks for four turns!!
Quite uncommon not to kill a champion in four rounds but can really one single stubborn stop a entire unit? We (as in I and my adversary) felt that it was a broken rule somewhere but we couldn't find anything in the rulebook, which in turn indicated that there is no rules for anything like this or is there?
Anyone know how to resolve a situation like this? His champion being able to challenge me totally negated the fact that he was outnumbered 8:1 whcih felt wrong but we played by the rulebook and that meant his single Hero stopped some 250 points of Knights. A fair trade for him :-)
Once you're in a challenge you continue it until either model has perished or one unit breaks.
This is why stubborn units and characters can be so cool (if they're yours) or annoying (if you're facing them) in a game. Just wait until you end up fighting his Trollslayers - no hoping for a botched leadership roll on that one. You have to kill them down to a man (well, half a man).
