View Full Version : WIP :: WH SoB Tarok August 4th, 2007, 19:52 Hi all,
I'm a recent convert to 40K. I've sort of started building up a WH 40K Witch Hunter army.
I decided to paint them the scheme that appears on the cover of the Witch Hunter Codex - red armour, white robes. Strangely this scheme does not appear in the codex itself as it's a pretty cool scheme...
Pretty much just the armour done right now.

(Sorry if the pics are too dark or grainy... )
Tarok {goofy} Scion of Chemos August 4th, 2007, 23:17 It looks kinda nice
I haven't seen that colour scheme before actually, keep it up.
What are you planing on the details by the way? Tarok August 4th, 2007, 23:37 Thanks for commenting :)
As this is a normal SoB squaddie, I was planning on keeping her fairly simple: red armour, white robes. I'll do the leather pouches and bolter in black. The fleur de li will be done in white as well. I haven't decided on a colour for the hair yet. I was thinking white or jet-black, but maybe I'll just do something 'normal', like blonde... :)
Tarok Tarok October 13th, 2007, 14:37 Boy it took some searchng for me to find this thread... shows when last I worked on this figure! :|:|
Okay... some updates....
- the head has been done, although I'm not entirely happy with the flesh - it think the shadows are too dark and I may tone it down with the very thin wash of the original BC.
- I've also re-BC'ed the robes, and applied a wash to them for the initial shadows.
- base has been undercoated black
- insignia have been BC'ed white
(apologies if the pics are not that great... i was in a bit of a hurry when i took them)

Tarok :C C/-Rt3r October 13th, 2007, 15:04 Keep the face. It looks great as is imo. Canew October 13th, 2007, 15:45 Wow! Nice job. I'm really liking the red armour. I've been afraid to do anything red beyond purity seals and lenses, partly because I've heard how hard it is to get it to look good, but you make it look easy! What's your secret? Looks like you used a red ink to shade it. Am I right? What did you use for a basecoat? Do you plan on an extreme-edge highlight, maybe of orange or blood red or something?
I think the face shading looks a bit dark, too, but your wash should fix that. Overall, very very nice. Me likey. ;Y xbanditsx October 13th, 2007, 21:54 I think the face looks pretty solid. The hair is a similar color to the flesh, which I find doesn't help to make the flesh look good. Maybe try another color for the hair to make it stand out from the face? Tarok October 13th, 2007, 21:58 Thanks for your comments C/-Rt3r and Canew. :)
@ Canew, the armour was done as follows:
BC: Scab Red
HL1: Red Gore
Wash: Red Ink + Black Ink
Repeat HL1
HL2: Red Gore + Blood Red
HL3: Blood Red
Glaze: Red Ink
Normally I would add a 4th HL before the glaze. This would consist of Blood Red + Blazing Orange (3:1).
Thanks again for your comments

Thanks xbanditsx. I see what you mean. I wanted to go a more natural look with the hair so went with blonde. The problem though is as you've said... makes the dark shadows stand out more... :? will try a different colour on the next lass. :)
Tarok :C Andusciassus October 13th, 2007, 22:30 I really like the smoothness of the armour, though it might well be yet improved by adding another even darker level of shading in certain areas.
And I agree, it's an awesome coloursheme.
Boy it took some searchng for me to find this thread
Go to your profile (click the "Quick Links" in the top bar, then chose "Threads started by Tarok", that'll narrow it down a bit and make the search go faster. There is also the "advanced search"-option in the same bar, under "Search". Tarok October 13th, 2007, 23:10 Thanks Andusciassus. Much appreciated :)

DOH! Why didn't I think of that! Live and learn ;Y
Tarok :C Tarok October 30th, 2007, 08:24 Well... I've done it.... I've actually completed a figure... my first one in over a year! :D
I'm not at all happy with the work on the white robes... there no other way to put it than that they look kak (to use a well-used S.African word). But... following the advice of a good friend, it's time to put this one behind me and move on :)

p.s. I see the base will need a touchup and some 'ard coat. The Fifth Horseman October 30th, 2007, 12:28 It's really good, especially given it's the first after a long break. Two thumbs up! Thanks fifth_horseman  Appreciate the comments. LOL at least it can only get better from here :rofl
Tarok :C slorak October 30th, 2007, 16:06 Definitely not bad at all for such a long hiatus. I would probably recommend re-sizing your pictures to around 300 pixels tall 400 max as at this size you really see all the imperfections that you wouldn't normally see by looking at the figure in person.
The strongest point on the figure is the red. I would probably go a bit darker with the base coat, however it is smoothly blended. While the robes are a bit plain I can see from the rear shot that you did put effort into shading and it too looks smooth. I would perhaps make sure more of the folds got the shading.
To make the figure pop more I would recommend going back and highlighting/detailing the small things such as: ammo clip, maybe the gun barrel so that it isn't all black, highlight the hair, , the grenades and other little bits.
....
On a completely un-related note.... The sculpt on the figures face is pretty bad. Makes the sisters look like men in drag! LOL!! 8X;?8X
Very good effort! Looking forward to seeing more of them!
Cheers,
-Mike Da Mighty Camel October 30th, 2007, 16:25 Nice work. I agree with Slorak regarding what he said (:P). I like the armour a lot (how did you do it?) and the robes look okay I think, altough they would defiently 'pop' with some more highlights and shading.
Why is the bolter pure black? Painting a few parts metallic would ad some more contrast to the model and make it look better IMO.
But overall, great work. Looking forward to seeing more from you! Tarok October 31st, 2007, 08:24 Thanks for commenting, lads. Much appreciated! ;Y
Mike: Agreed about the piccie size. But I think after staring at this figure for nigh on 4 months (what can I say? I paint real slow! :D) all the imperfections are deeply embedded on my psyche! LOL!
Agreed about the highlights. I kinda got into the "just gotta get this #!*&^ figure done" rut and rushed things a bit over the last day or so.
Da Mighty Camel: Thanks mate! :)the armour was done as follows:
BC: Scab Red
HL1: Red Gore
Wash: Red Ink + Black Ink
Repeat HL1
HL2: Red Gore + Blood Red
HL3: Blood Red
Glaze: Red Ink
What I should have added a 4th HL before the glaze. This would consist of Blood Red + Blazing Orange (3:1).
The bolter was actually HL'ed with first VC Oxford Blue + Black, then Oxford Blue, and then Pale Blue.... but.... I rushed things in the end and didn't do it properly :?
Thanks again for commenting guys. I'll definitely use your advice when embarking on my next mini-adventure :)
Tarok :C Ferrel October 31st, 2007, 15:03 I have to say I'm starting to regret using black as the basis for my sisters. Every time I see a more interesting color like this I get a bit jealous!
Very good job on the sister! The face looks fantastic and everything blends really well. I think a whole army of this paint scheme on the field would be well recieved. Tarok November 1st, 2007, 07:18 Hey Ferrel,
Thanks for commenting.
The colour scheme is inspired from the cover of the WH Codex. This scheme really appeals to me as I predominantly model historical miniatures of the Roman periods and knights of the monastic orders and this scheme reminded me very much of the Knights of St John or Malta :)
Cheers
Tarok :C kore November 2nd, 2007, 20:53 The facial detail is intense. I hope to have the skill, one day, to paint faces that well. Tarok November 2nd, 2007, 21:44 The facial detail is intense. I hope to have the skill, one day, to paint faces that well.
