minus_t that banner looks freaking awesome. I have no idea how hard/easy it is to paint but its the effect that counts and that looks brilliant.

My vote goes to minus_t. The work on this banner is very good. I find the 3D effect is very well done. It gives alot to look at and the work on the gas-giant planet is especially good. The model is good too, I like the pose. Plus the details and the good highlights deserve respect, black is hard to highlight.

Well, I think that painting a freehand banner is the most difficult part of miniature painting, so all of you that entered already get my respect. I only have the one vote though, and it went to Ira. Good job you guys.

I too went for -t's model who is rather masterful at these contests. The Blood Angels banner could have gotten alot more votes if more of the banner faced the camera, a textured base would have done it a favour too, the banner still murders anything I've tired.

I cast my vote for -T. It seemed the popular thing to do. I wanted to vote for Leech as well.

I had to vote for Ira's rather imaginative Orc Standard.
While -t's Marine was insanely good, it kind of ruined the whole "competition" thing :P

im going with the throng and voting for minus -t, thats very very good freehand my friend- it reminds me of the huge banners people used to add onto their Golden Demon entries in the mid 90s. As we say in north wales, Splendudno

There were a lot of other entries i liked, in particular Leech and Ira's, Leech may have got my vote apart from the fact i hate that mini, the paint job is great but ive never liked that guy!

There are three really 'high Standard' (sorry, I had to HAD TO get that in there) models that could get my vote.

Earl, Leech and -T.

Unfortunately, I have to vote for Minus. Even though in July he had the look of Old Nick about him.

I swear, those freehands aren't the first real attempt made by a man with his soul intact.

Begrudgingly, I await next month so that I can try even harder to not beat him.

Leech's actual figure is probably the best there....

but -T's banner is literally a work of art...

I too liked the savage orc.

In my opinion, it was Leech who took my vote, as the entry felt very realistic and 'worn'. I prefer to see models that look realistic (the model reminded me of the soldiers in Joan of Arc, 1999) than seeing one that is beautifully painted.

Minus-t, you would have had my vote, but felt that you would have won anyway for the banner, and so Leech's got my vote for being a realistic looking model (Leech's was more realistic overall in my opinion, sorry). As I've said before, the dull black of the marine helps to move the attention on the superb freehand banner, but I would have liked to have seen a better colour scheme for the marine. Personal preference and all, which I felt would have been better.

Pretty nice, decent TT standard, though a tad ink-heavy for my personal tastes. I wouldn't dream of knocking your ability to get loads of stuff painted very fast (!), but it would be nice to see you spending a little more time on a model.

Looks great, I like that the savage orcs haven't really made their own banner, just 'modified' a chaos one... =D I think the 'rock' on his club could do with a little more work, and a better photo would really help.

The standard looks fantastic, although I'm not really a fan of the metallics on it (seems like a 'real' use of NMM to me!). The rest of the model is slightly less good, IMO, and a little ink-heavy.
I like the helmet, but I'm not sure it 'goes' somehow...
Also, make sure you base things! I think I remember you posting this up as WIP, so maybe you've already done this =)

The photos leave a bit to be desired, with some slightly odd crops; and the whole model is a bit glossy for my tastes, but nothing that can detract from the obvious quality of the job.

Really nice, characterful model, with a paint job that makes him look like a grizzled, veteran career soldier, which is who I'd entrust my standard to!
I think I'd like to see the reds on the banner be a little brighter, as they are overpowered by the whites, IMO. But that is probably personal taste...

Crappy photos, I could only get the extremes, either over exposed or under exposed. Grr.

Arms, one old school, one new loyalist.

Legs, old school loyalist. Both broken in half, removed at the joints, bent, GSed et c.

Torso, CHAOS marine.

Head, old loyalist, eyes cut out (I had to they were messed up) then refilled with GS.

Power pack, Chaos with the extensions trimmed out.

Bolter, old school loyalist with the mag removed.

Standard bottom, toothpick with a plastic bit on the bottom.

Standard top, Brettonian lance.

Tube, guitar wire.

Icons, Green stuff.

That's about it. :D

I don't like the insane level of glare either, but for some unknown reason, the matt finish varnish I used didn't matt finish :/
As for the rim of the base....wasn't thinking :P not really an excuse, but still the truth. Probably would have brought out the greenery sitting infront of/underneath the rock too, oh well.

I just had to add my vote to the collection that minus_t has amassed - that banner is just too darned good.

Great job everyone.

Now that I have picked my jaw up off the floor (man do I need to sweep) I can comment on the entries.

First of all, I was going to vote for Ira until I saw -t's entry (sorry, it's just so amazing I have to vote for it), I really like the ork and the banner, it's a nice model.


That would be followed by Earl's model, who looked awesome, but for some reason the weathering you did, (to me) seemed too... splotchy. It looked less like real weathering, and more like just spots of random paint. It's still a damn impressive model though.

And third would be Leech's. I really liked the model, but the picture was a bit too... pink, for me. I don't know how much photoshopping occurred, or if the "pinkness" was intentional or not, but for me it made it harder to really tell how good the model was. It looks impressive, but the pinkish overtones make it seem kinda dull.

As a last word, There are several good entries, and it's almost a shame that -t's model is in this contest as that thing is just so impressive and so well done that it's difficult to compete with it.

-T, hands down. The theme of the banner is the only thing that detracts from it, IMHO a hero decapitating an ork or something would be more fitting, but as it is, the skill there easily outclasses everyone else by far.

I liked Cadaver Junkie's second best- the base in particular sets it off rather well, although it really didn't have much of a banner, which is why I didn't vote for it.

Anyway, there are a lot of fine entries in this contest to be sure. I'm especially fond of Ira's savage orc - it is very nicely done.

However, -t takes this one without a doubt. I'm completely floored by that banner, and in awe of your skill, sir. Hats off, to be sure.

I think the entries were good this time. Overall a good standard, pardon the pun. Taking part and doing a standard for me was fun as I rarely ever do them being a Tyranid nut and the Bugs don't have banners. I hope others enjoyed it.

Did anyone else notice how there would be like one small plot advance in that show like every three episodes and the rest was them just fighting really fast, and they would always say "wait until next time to see what happens" after you just watched half an hour of nothing but blurred kung fu.)

The only time I ever watched DragonBall Z was literally half an hour of watching various people standing looking agro, with those mental, flashing backgrounds, and their lips and/or pupils shuddering. No fighting (or anything else) took place.

speaking of future contests, when is the terrain category going to come around? I have a bunch of terrain to paint but no motivation do actually do it!

Ira, the previous winner gets to choose the next category, so, if you want to paint terrain *that* badly, you'll just have to paint whatever -t chooses *that* well to win!

I already have a couple of ideas if I won. In the unlikely event of JQ winning, oxygen masks will fall from the overhead compartment, there is a life jacket under your seat and the exits are here, here and here.

Yay I got second! Excellent job -t, you well deserve your amazing lead in first place. When I first saw karmoons face on that banner i thought 'how on earth did he paint that?', your actual banner was just as good though ;).
