Hey all,
I've been absent from the boards recently for one reason:
2250 points of nids in 30 days.
And I've done it :D
Anyway this thread is about converting a Hive Tyrant and giving him wings.
Now most of you can probably do this in your sleep, but to me, building, modifying and painting a Hive Tyrant is a big deal. And here are the results:
I'd just like to thank:
Jaffar Hassad + Deceiver
-T, Cheredanine, Paint Monkey, Thepaintingmonkey
The guys'n'gals at LO chat
For all their help and support. :C
Right:
My aim was to have a Hive Tyrant lumbering over a defeated and broken and possibly weeping Avatar. The Tyrant, a mere bug in the scheme of the Hive Mind gingerly smashes down the Avatar - the spindly Eldar's last hope against a self initiated oblivion.
Here is Harry (The Avatar):

Harry being defeated by weetabix

And harry being painted up:

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l177/karmoon/Tyranids/Harrybase.jpg
Here's some crappy freehand i tried - feel free to mock me:

The results:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l177/karmoon/Tyranids/Harry-paintedfinal.jpg
At this point.. I must admit.. I thoroughly enjoyed painting Harry. Every second of it I enjoyed. The Avatar is a great model.
And now Clive...
Clive took a lot of planning. I didn't feel happy with cutting into a £25 model.. I had to make sure that I got him right.. here are some pics:
Here's clive built with magnets in his shoulders:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l177/karmoon/Tyranids/clivesshinyshouldersockets.jpg
Magnetising is VERY VERY easy. I'd strongly recommend it to everyone.
And here's a mock up of the final pose:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l177/karmoon/Tyranids/clivestompsonharry-unpaintedstudy1.jpg
Also, I wanted Clive to have a special Devourer, something which marked him differently somehow, so this is what I came out with - a quintiple linked Devourer (take that you WYSIWYG rules lawyers!)
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l177/karmoon/Tyranids/clivesshootyarm.jpg
and what it looks like ON clive:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l177/karmoon/Tyranids/clivequintiplelinkeddevourer-stu-1.jpg
I just feel that the presence of scything talons makes the model a lot better. With just the stumpy little arms, he doesn't look like he could defeat Harry.
Jaffar Hassad came out with an idea to improve the pipes and the like, when I get better at modelling, I'll try it out:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l177/karmoon/Tyranids/Clive_crappy_edit.jpg
And here's the mocked up final pose there he is next to a Chaos terminator to give you some idea of the beast's scale:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l177/karmoon/Tyranids/DSC00348.jpg
And then finally.. (after dropping Clive and having him smash to bits and then rebuilding him) the ardous act of painting him:
Dry brush a go go baby:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l177/karmoon/Tyranids/Clivestage1.jpg
Then I summoned all my courage and stuck him to za base - Stage 2:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l177/karmoon/Tyranids/Clivestage2.jpg
I dunno what happened to stage 3.. i think he went out shopping.. he might have taken stage 4 too.. so.. Stage 4 or 5:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l177/karmoon/Tyranids/Clivestage4or5.jpg
So.. all that remained were the wings and various final touches - the devourer and what not and voila:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l177/karmoon/Tyranids/clive-lamp2.jpg
1 complete hive Tyrant and I didn't die :D Please notice the gaunt by his feet just so you can see how big he is comparatively.
Just to see how he fits in with the scheme here are some others from the same army:
Carnifex:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l177/karmoon/Tyranids/Carnifex3.jpg
and for all you whiners who say that TL Devoureres are better, here's the same carnifex again:

Broodlord:

Thanks for reading.
Thanks for everyone's help.
I'm so happy that I've an entirely painted army!
