View Full Version : [Contest] Non-Combatant King Ulrik Flamebeard September 4th, 2007, 19:31 Many thanks, and congratulations to Minus_T for the new contest, see below, and winning the last contest with such an outstanding difference. I would also like to thank you all for entering, even if you did not win. Well done to you. =)
Contest: Non-Combatant
For this contest, you are required to paint a model or models that show your
army's non-violent side, whether this be a medicine man, mechanic,
quartermaster, or whoever...
What I want to see in this is people getting into the background of their army
and really paying homage to it... Anything from an undead Khremian Architect
designing pyramids, to a Tyranid critter eating dead skin inside a hive ship,
anything goes.
If you want to be a bit less wacky, how about a Space Marine Apothecary caring
to the wounded? Gandalf smoking pipe-weed? A dwarf brewer tending his hops?
If you want your model to have a 'real' use in-game, how about turning it into
an objective marker? There's nothing to stop you plonking your model down in
the middle of the battlefield as your take-and-hold objective... I know I always
fight much harder when I've got my Apothecary or Standard Bearer (posing as
objectives) sitting amongst enemy troops...
For this contest, small mini dioramas are allowed. BUT, they must fit onto a single legal sized base and fit the theme.
Closing date; Tuesday 2nd October 2007 at 23:59pm (GTM) .- That's one minute to midnight on the Tuesday

Contest rules.
People entering have one month in which to design, build and paint a single based model to the theme set. Members will be expected to post their pictures (in the thread for that contest) which will then be placed into a thread for voting. It is done so that people can improve their skills, and try out things. And purely for fun, there is no prize or anything, just the fun of it
1.) Models from any manufacturer are allowed, as are scratch built models.
2.) There is one month to each project.
3.) One base (any size) per entry... Multiple models permanently fixed to the single base are allowed. No armies on display boards though.
4.) Models painted within the time frame are looked upon favourably. (It is of course impossible for us to check). Please use this competition to come up with a new idea.
5.) Pictures can be no wider than 700 pixels
6.) Maximum of two pictures can be posted. Single pictures of multiple views (montages) are allowed.
7.) The organisers of the competition have the right to refuse entry to any applicant if they feel it doesn't meet the criteria
8.) Voting. It is considered bad sportsmanlike to vote for yourself. You are voting on what you think is the most original, unique, clever conversion with the most groundbreaking painting techniques.

And good luck to all!! Jaffar_Hasad September 4th, 2007, 19:46 I'm in. Would I be allowed to use a commander in terminator armour, as long as his pose is non-threatening? ShadowZora13 September 4th, 2007, 20:34 Would a techmarine be acceptable? I was just about to start painting one as a showcase type model anyways. If not thats cool. Leech September 4th, 2007, 21:38 This sounds like fun. I think I will do something for my Tyranids. A critter which spends it's time laying eggs or something wich tends the eggs inside the hive and doesn't do any fighting would be fun. Or maybe a critter which gathers up dead bodies etc and places them in digestion pools but does no fighting itself. I will have to conduct an in depth review of my bits box for this.
I will have to think of an appropriate shape for it, cooking up a non-violent Tyranid or a Tyranid that hasn't been bred with the purpose of it doing any fighting will be an interesting challenge. minus_t September 5th, 2007, 01:28 This sounds like fun. Now thats what I'm talking about.

Oh, and the creature that gathers up the dead bodies etc is the Malanthrope (I believe), which you can see all about in IA4. I think that's what it does, anyway. Been a while since I borrowed that book...
SZ: Sounds good, especially if he's doing something "techy", rather than "fighty".
JH: Hm, not really what I was after. Maybe if you had some courtesans carrying his ceremonial weapons, and him belssing them (or something).
Basically, what does your Terminator Captain do when he isn't in battle?
I have a few ideas for this myself, but I suspect that I won't get anything finished tbh. Pretty busy schedule this month. Exciting things occuring...
Good luck all, and get thinking/converting!
-t. Killswitch September 5th, 2007, 02:36 Hmmmmmmmmm....How about a marine in a library, studying at a desk. Kinda like in Wolfblade, how Torin (I think it is..) reads books all the time, or is it the old guy? Either way, I'm sure those would work...Or maybe a medic caring to a wounded IG soldier, or a Tech-marine repairing a damaged rhino, or a Tomb Spyder gathering fallen necrons. Anyway, this is gonna be fun.
-J ShadowZora13 September 5th, 2007, 03:56 Well the model, which I have made already, isn't too fightey, but I suppose I'll try to make something for him to be working on or something if I have time then... and pop him onto a bigger base to go with it.
*EDIT* After rummaging through my bitz I have found a monstrous creature sized base, and some good vehicle bitz, so my Techmarine is gonna be clearing debris from the battle field. Does that sound ok? Also, is it alright if I make the model and scenic base separate, like do up the base with a 25mm hole in it for the techmarines base to fit in, so I can still display it by itself, and since iis already all glued in and stuff. Ira September 5th, 2007, 04:58 interesting idea. I just got started on a mini diorama on a 25mm base. Jon Quixote September 5th, 2007, 10:28 Oooh, something out of leftfield from Mr T. (and not the musical group or the chap from the A-Team)
I am stumped as to an idea, but I think I can come up with something.
Good theme, -t.
EDIT: I'm not half daft sometimes. I got an order in for some bits, as I planned to make something for fun. This can easily be a non-combatant. zuke174 September 5th, 2007, 18:12 Well, I've been in Space Marine mode lately, between assembling / painting Blood Drinkers and reading the Soul Drinkers Omnibus, so that's where I'm planning to go. The thing is, every Space Marine is combat-ready, even the apothecaries and techs mentioned earlier in the thread. Is it enough to have a Marine fulfilling a non-combative role, maybe just with all his weapons holstered?
I'm thinking about a Techmarine myself, but I'm planning to give him a Bolt Pistol in its holster on his hip while he does his work. It's kind of inspired by a few scenes from the Soul Drinkers, where Techmarines are asked to hack into systems under fire. That might lead me to some good Kill-Team missions with this guy... Killswitch September 5th, 2007, 21:55 Oh yeah, guys, feel free to take any of my above posted Ideas, I don't really mind.
Just trying to help get the contest going.

Oh yes I have a Malanthrope. I don't think they are non-combatants, they are very nasty overall. I was thinking about a giant worm grub which scoops up bodies etc but that's a little to combat-like, I think I will go for the egg-carer. Some sort of highly specialised type of Tyranid which looks after/tends/organises eggs. Zveroboy September 7th, 2007, 14:57 Nice idea and a very tempting one too. If I find something suitable, I just may well enter. Guant September 13th, 2007, 01:08 Well the next time Im at the hobby stoer Ill see what I can do to whip up some engineers for my IG tanks. _Toast_ September 13th, 2007, 01:14 Hey, how about that one FW cadian shocktrooper bending over, and typing into the computer terminal? Hes pretty non threatening, the worst being a clip board :P. Thats probably the only model that fits into this catagory atm, so if hes in...yay!, If hes not...um...not-so-yay! XenomarinesKiller September 13th, 2007, 03:08 could i do my leman russ, but with the crew sitting around? non threatening enough? sitting around, smoking, that kind of stuff. minus_t September 13th, 2007, 09:08 All three of those last ones sound good.
How about some crewmen playing cards?
Remember kids, Gambling is fun.
-t. Howser September 20th, 2007, 16:35 Oh cool, I'm finally in time for a contest, can I post in this thread ? The paint job isn't too flash but I was experimenting with new scalpel blades the other week & chopped up one of my old pre-painted MK 6 guys.
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff231/howser1974/003.jpg zuke174 September 24th, 2007, 04:16 Well, here goes.
My entry is for my Lost and the Damned Beastmen army, a vehicle maintenance crewman that I'm calling a Technogor. Here's a front and back shot of him...
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j87/zuke174/40K%20Beastmen/Technogor01.jpg http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j87/zuke174/40K%20Beastmen/Technogor02.jpg
Anyway, no matter what happens, I'm glad to have entered into this competition. Kuffy said from the start that this was supposed to broaden our techniques and flavor for our armies, and I feel that this has done both for me. I sculpted his hair from green stuff for the first time, and it came out looking pretty good. Also, I made the base with a piece of industrial plate-patterned plasticard, to place him inside a facility or starship where he does his work. Besides all that, I came up with the idea of the Technogors for the purpose of this contest, and that led to a complete re-write of their history fluff and ideas for more models for the army!
I've already won. Thanks, everyone! Jon Quixote September 24th, 2007, 09:28 Nice entries so far guys.
Well, here's my entry.
If you've seen Full Metal Jacket, you'll see where I got my inspiration from.
He's a Combat Correspondent, 'Joker'.

"What is your major malfunction, Private?!"
Like Zuke, I took great pleasure from this as I think I did my best and most subtle blending (on the green) to date.
I'm not very happy with some of the GS work particularly the hair, but that just needs more patience.
Let's see some more entries! minus_t September 24th, 2007, 09:36 Yay, entries!
All lookin' good so far guys, especially admiring Zuke for getting so much out of the contest...
JQ, awesome. I love the peace badge on his helmet, and the sun glasses are very nicely done.
Good on ya!
-t. Jon Quixote September 24th, 2007, 09:44 Thanks, you can't see it very well (because I wanted a dark green) but it says 'Born to Kill' next to the peace badge.

LOL -- "Speak up, soldier, or you'll be standing tall before the man!"
"I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man, sir!"
"The what?"
"The duality of man, sir!"
*looooong pause*
"Listen, son, are you a soldier in this man's army?"
"Yes, sir!"
"Do you love your country?"
"Yes sir!"
"(some sort of ramble about being a part of the team)"
"Yes, sir!" ShadowZora13 September 25th, 2007, 01:44 Here is my entry:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ShadowZora13/techmarine-contest.jpg
I really enjoyed painting this model. I really improved my ability to highlight and blend with it, and although the pictures don't do the armor justice, That is definitely my favorite part of it. Really a very nice model to paint, so much detail. In fact, it makes me a bit nervous to paint the harnessed Techmarine have, because I have to do thing big guy again PLUS a giant multi armed backpack... The base was also my first attempt at any time of scenic basing, and I think it turned out pretty nicely, and captures the look of a Techmarine salvaging scrap for field repairs nicely.
Anyways, as most people seem to be giving background on their models, I will too. Now as most people who play Iron Hands know, the Iron Father is described as taking on the role as chaplain and Techmarine. Well I figured that while he may be able to work on tanks and such effectively, when would he really have time to inspire faith in his troops, command them in battle AND fix a rhino? So I decided it would be plausible for the Iron Hands to have full time Techmarines along with their Iron Fathers. With all those dreadnoughts and bionics, the more help the better, right? And this let me paint him red, which is the main reason I wanted to do this model.
whew, that was unnecessarily long winded I think....
Hope the image isn't too big. It's 700px wide by 800px tall, so That should be OK, but if it needs to be smaller, let me know. Jon Quixote September 25th, 2007, 09:56 Nice one Shadow. The collage really shows it off. Lovely red.
And a super base. *Gasp*
Good work.
One week left! zuke174 October 5th, 2007, 14:06 OK, I'll ask:
Time's up, so we're supposed to vote, correct? Has the voting thread been made, and I just missed it in the recent website down-time? I don't mean to be overly anxious, but I'm curious to see exactly how I did. Or, did we not get enough entries? | |
