View Full Version : 40k 5th edition in 2008

Do you believe 5th edition is coming out in 2008?

I find the idea of that highly dubious. Not without an updated Dark Eldar codex, at any rate (and an updated Necron codex would be expected as well, as leaving armies with second and third edition codexes for 5th edition's start would be quit... irksome. It's bad enough Orks had to wait as long as they did for an update).

I'd say 09 at the earliest sounds more correct.

I couldn't see GW putting out another rulebook very soon. They still have Dark Eldar, Imperial Guard, Necrons, Space Wolf, Orks (who are comming out very soon), the Inquisition (Daemonhunters, Witchhunters, Alienhunters) and the Daemons codex's to be updated to the 4th edition rules.

If, by some strange turn of events GW did go 5th edition next year, I think I would stop playing, at least until 6th edition came out (which, if all this happens could be by 2011 :P) because I'm not interested in buying a new rulebook and a host of new codecies.

Maybe at Christmas 2008. Wouldn't expect it any time in the next 6 months though.

It will come when it comes. I'm tipping mid next year.

@chosen40k: your Poll needs a close date. I recommend you edit it. Thanks.

Most posts that start 'Not to be a jerk...' usually mean to be a jerk, but i really dont mean to be, i just want to simply inform you guys...

There is already a post about this issue, i guess yours is a bit different, as it is a poll, but really the same discussion has been running in circles already, on the same subject.

EDIT: I removed The attempted funny part. I put it here to try and lighten the tone of my post, since i dont want to come off as a jerk and get bad rep, i usually like to turn posts like this into a bit of a funny rant as to not make myself seem like a jerk, as said just now.... The funny bit has been removed, but i was just trying to be friendly! :(

I don't believe it in the least. It's FAR too early to do so, and not even GW are that stupid.

I'd say it will come out 2010, 2011 (the year we host the RWC, that could be a good year). This is something too big for me believe in until GW at least hinted about it.

like everyone else pointed out...

...Too Soon :X

although the guy (can't remember his/her name), does state that this came from a very reliable source quite possibly means that it could be possible for GW to make 5th

but, it still doesn't make much sense in making it now...

I've been told by a GW manager, and ususaly he's quite reliable about this stuff, that it is and that the box set will have orks and marines in it.

From what I've heard IG is only getting new models this far. Orks next year with Space wolves and Daemon codex, then 09 should see the DarkEldar and Inquisition.

As for 5th edition.. do they make it before the new codex's or After........ :0

If it is a minor change to the rules, then I sometime late 2008 is very likely. If they're planning on a major overhaul, it'll be later.

My rational for this can be found here (http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108093&page=7), my post is 3rd from the top.

While releasing the a set of rules before updating every codex would be a president (except for armies that were discontinued, like squats), there's no reason they couldn't/wouldn't.

If for some reason there is a 5th Ed. it will most likely be a minor re tooling than a complete over haul. kinda like the recent fantasy rewrite.

For the record, there were almost 60 changes to the rules, varying from relatively minor to really significant (like needing 5 models wide to make a rank).

Another point that I would like to mention is that JvK has lined up a load of books due out in various time. Necrons, Orks, Space Wolves and Dark Eldar are all on that. I can't imagine 5th Ed. coming out any time soon.

GW need to start making money. So milking the cash cow is the best / quickest way. Hence, Apocolypse.

A new 40K rulebook / box set would generate quite a lot of turnover. My bet is it will happen in October 2008.

On how much I think creating a 5th edition stupid(as pretty much everyone else here thinks that too) I still wouldn't doubt gamesworkshop for a second about these things. An hopefully it would only be one with very few rule changes

I doubted this rumour too at first, but I'm starting to come around to the idea that it might happen. With Apocalypse, and all the rumours about the possible addition of flyers into the game it seems like it could happen. After all, it's more likley we would be looking at a refinment rather than any kind of large overhaul, so codex incompatibilities may be minor.

Also, GW are starting to re-write the last of the 3rd edition codecies next year anyeay, with Orks in January, Dark Eldar highly probably coming out some time near the Daemons codex, and rumours starting to pop up about a new Guard codex being written (which fits in very nicley with rumours about the addition of flyers and the possible release of the plastic Valkyrie).
This only leaves Necrons, Space Wolves (which are also likley to see a new codex within the year) and the repeatedly delayed Inquisition codex.

However, when you look at GW's track record for getting releases out on time, Summer '08 could easily become Winter '08 or even some time in 2009.

Who knows though, if the rumours have any substance then it is likley they have the Guard codex and the rumoured Apocalypse supplement (Dropsite I think its called) hanging on the timley release of V Ed.

Yeah, from most of peoples whining I find it pretty hard not to toss on some scorn. Let's just remind everyone that from the talk, it is only a minor bump, much like 4th ed, and like the new fantasy rules.

Movement will still be the same, but all units will now get a march order, allowing them a fleet move under certain circumstances.

And according to the sources, the last 4 codex have been written with these rules in mind, so no real changes need be made to the "new" codex that have come out.

While I'm not a huge fan of shifting to a new rule book, I am a fan of GW updating some of the broken stuff it has released. Hopefully this is a start down that long long long long road.

I don't think this poll should continue. It has been confirmed at Warseer that the 5th edition thing was all a misunderstanding.

5th edition is not coming out next year.

Are you saying that it could be just a big Fluke?

That means it could be coming out in 2009 instead then :?

Not without an updated Dark Eldar codex,

Well from what I have heard is that Dark Eldar will not be updated in 4th edition but be updated at the same time as 5th edition. So much the same as 3rd edition.

Would be surprising if they did bring it out so soon after 4th ed. It really hasn't been that long, plus DE still haven't had an updated codex...

I thought as much... they should focus their energy on the codexes and on burning and eradicating every memory of LOTR! BURNNNNN!

Yeah i agree that the game is too much, because now i can see that GW is terribly ruining the whole feeling of LotR by inviting new monsters into the fray.

It's just that, the films and books are brilliant but the game, that's what spoils it...

Actually LOTR sold more stuff that WHFB recently or something like that. I should link this thread to TLA and see what the 10K members there think.

But on that note I actually agree with Kai-Itza. GW absolutely killed it after bringing out FotN (the most overpowered units in the game, and they're getting worse. The models were awful -now they're just unpredictable quality- and supplements are just being rushed out every 2 months). I jumped ship about an hour ago.

I'd be happy with a new edition. I just started and have only bought some books and comics so far :)

I suppose if they did a 5th Ed of the Rulebook, i wont mind too much, but i REFUSE to pay more than 25 pounds for it! :0 if its 30+ then im just sticking with the current book and will learn the new rule changes from friends...

So yea, lets hope its just a few tweaks and not an overhaul :) although to be honest, why not wait until your due for an overhaul anyway? seems silly making a '5th Ed' and then redoing it all again in '6th Ed' ...

Think about the Trees! :| lol
