View Full Version : Question on ship size

I've been wanting to start playing BFG for awhile and as added motivation, a friend and I have decided to challenge each other to scratch build fleets. I love the look and rules for Eldar and in the end decided to go with a Craftworld Eldar fleet.

I've started working on ideas for the ships, however I've never actually seen any BFG ships in person (other then a few Imperial and Chaos ships years ago) and have some questions on their size:

How long and how wide are the Dragonship and Wraithship?
What size are the BFG bases? Are they equivalent to the standard GW flying stands (or any of the other GW bases for that matter)?
Assuming they're not just black painted flying stands, has anyone seen the BFG bases available on their own?
What size should the bases for attack craft be? How many attack craft should their be on a single base?

I'll probably end up getting some of the official models eventually, as they look great, but unfortunately BFG products can be a little hard to find and I'm eager to get started.

An additional question, I've been toying with also doing a rather un-orthodox (I think) ork fleet as well. Probably start with a 1000 point force made up primarily of Brute Ram Ships (about 20ish), a few Roks to back them up and eventually a Space Hulk to bring everything up to 1500+ points. I realise this probably isn't a very well balanced or competitive list (I'm not looking to win any tournaments with it), but would it even be playable? I really like the ideas behind both Ram ships and Roks and feel like it could be a fun, orky force to field. That said, my biggest worry is that I'll be unable to keep Roks and Ram Ships in any sort of coherency and allow my opponent to deal with the two halves of the fleet one at a time and the whole thing just won't work.

Cheers, appreciate any comments

As far as the ship bases go, they are indeed the normal flying bases painted black. Most escort and cruiser class ships use the smaller base while most grand cruiser and battleship class ships use the larger base.

Yup, anything 8 hull points or lower tends tobe mounted on a small flying base while 10 points and higher are mounted on large bases (though 10 hull points is a foggy number where you can get away with a small base, it's generally accepted that 10 should be a large base).

Attack craft markers are 20x20mm, how many there are per base is a matter of opinion, you could probably justify any number of fighters you wanted, but the pictures on the markers show 5 fighters, 4 bombers or 3 boats (iirc).

Imperial and Chaos cruisers are about 100mm long, with Eldar ships being slightly smaller, escorts are around 30mm and below.

Thank you both for the info, very helpful indeed.... Also, I should clearly get around to printing the templates, as that would have answered the question about attack craft bases.

Cheers

I believe the latest FAQ clarifies it. For a ship to be on a large base, it must have at least 3 shields, or more than 10 hull points.
