View Full Version : The Music That We Paint to. Ultramoose December 1st, 2007, 06:56 I don't know 'bout the rest of you guys, but i can't get into a good painting swing without some decent music. For painting purposes, i like some upbeat folk music, memphis blues, and flamenco guitar.
What about you? Seth the Dark December 1st, 2007, 08:13 I go with some Iron Maiden and I usually watch one of their concerts while painting. Azure Fade December 1st, 2007, 10:41 Coheed and Cambria have been the sound of my latest marine painting operation Chaoschrist December 1st, 2007, 10:57 I most of the time just put my mp3player on shuffle and see what comes along. Though I often listen to podcasts or catch up with The Howard Stern show as I don't have time to listen to it every day.
From time to time I'll have a movie playing in the background, sometimes with director's commentary on it.
But as for music, it can vary from the Star wars soundtrack to some kind of deathmetal/grindcore band. Depends a bit on what I feel like.
Last time I painted for a longer period on the day I had some collection of medieval folk music playing Ancalagon December 1st, 2007, 11:51 Normally it's some heavy metal. Often part of my Iron Maiden collection (17 albums and counting...) or Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Trivium etc. Sometimes I put a bit of rock on too like GNR or Muse...but it's normally metal.
Then, when I'm done painting I pick up my guitar and play some metal... Walex December 1st, 2007, 18:28 My iPod exists as a device that makes me do things faster (walk, paint etc) so it's normally on shuffle. If I really want to go faster then I put on a bit of J pop and sing along (this makes me faster for some reason). Seasonreaper December 1st, 2007, 18:32 Usually whatever my PC randomises, which has recently been a mix of Iron Maiden, Amon Amarth, Agalloch and the like, although G'N'R does come out sometimes ;Y. PoptartsNinja December 1st, 2007, 19:30 I paint to the Starship Troopers soundtrack. It really helps me keep my Tyranids reasonably uniform. :) NiteRabbit December 1st, 2007, 19:53 I just set my player to shuffle, but make sure to leave out any songs that might be considered remotely funny as when I laugh, it throws off my brush control and has lead to some unfortunate accidents involving citadel paints and my clothes. Inquisitor Blackadder December 1st, 2007, 19:56 It can be anything ranging from good ol' battle metal(my fave) to film soundtracks including LOtR, 300 Pirates of the Caribbean Helbrecht December 1st, 2007, 20:11 Coheed and Cambria have been the sound of my latest marine painting operation
Same here, got all 4 albums plus the EP's. If I want something darker I switch to Fear Factory, Dreachon December 1st, 2007, 20:54 rammstein

What about you?
Hmm. Flamenco?
Have you heard of Rodrigo y Gabriela? Amazing stuff. I'm sure you can Youtube "Diablo Rojo". I think it's one of their best songs.
Personally, I listen to ABC. Anything but country.
It seems most of the 40k players like their rock. Ultramoose December 1st, 2007, 21:18 Hmm. Flamenco?

Ive noticed that. I can't listen to metal when i paint lol. i love it, but it makes me shaky with energy. lol. I like power metal for when im playing. its so epic.
i don't flamenco artists, for my flamenco needs i have a couple webradios i like so i dont usually see the names Sajiisde December 1st, 2007, 21:35 I usually don't listen to music while I paint, but usually have comedy central or something on so i can give a quick glance up every once in a while. So many metal listeners! I don't think i could ever paint while listening to metal, that's just too crazy! Kudos to you guys who do! I can and do happily paint along to metal like I said earlier. I love the music, I love painting, add together and I'm very happy. I don't often feel the need for headbanging or anything and if I did I would put the brush down first! twovultures_aa December 1st, 2007, 22:04 When I paint, I generally listen to an online radio channel called pandora.com, and end up listening mostly to metal (Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth, Rammstein) omgitsduane December 1st, 2007, 22:26 Alexisonfire or From autumn to ashes!
Woooooooo
*dances* Canuck December 1st, 2007, 22:27 I usually listen to anything by Blink 182, the Offpring and Nickelback.
Or anything alternative rock, rock, punk and punk rock genres.
P.S. Occasionaly Supertramp (great band). omgitsduane December 1st, 2007, 22:32 oh blink and the offspring... memories The Spoon December 1st, 2007, 22:36 Hammerfall, Iron Madien, Rammstein, DragonForce......
The list of metal bands goes on..... Nemy December 2nd, 2007, 04:05 For me I listen to good old Porcupine Tree. I really like the soothing music they do and the band is a very talented band (Gavin Harrison of the band got number 1 as best drummer in numerous drummer magazines and iirc got awards for his talent) and the singer is such an awesome song writer as well as a musician. And the rest is equally awesome. Yay for progressive rock :P croakies December 2nd, 2007, 06:41 Gwar suites me just fine. Mr.Grim December 2nd, 2007, 07:16 Hammerfall, Iron maiden, Rammstein, Manowar, Dream Evil, NIN, Mushroomhead, Nickelback, ShatterSphere, and many many more
i just go to youtube or put my computer on random. Canuck December 2nd, 2007, 12:24 oh blink and the offspring... memories
You know the Offspring are still together and I think they have an album coming out in 2008. And as you probably know blink 182 split up into +44 and Angels and Airwaves. What about you?
Can you post some of the artists you listen to? I like those genres too, but I've only heard them in bookstores and such.
For my part, I listen to a variety of things, from David Bowie and Depeche Mode to Gackt and J-rock. Basically, anything except country. Toastee December 2nd, 2007, 17:55 Anything to do with metal, industial, EBM, Goth. I'll probably listen to it. Inquisitor Lord2506 December 2nd, 2007, 18:20 for the eldar giger project the bands called dope and bit of old school nivana seem to be hitting the taste buds at the moment:happy: Sister Bluebird December 2nd, 2007, 18:25 I painted my Tau to the sound of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Greatest Hits, because that was the only music on my computer at the time.
They were running down a dream. omgitsduane December 2nd, 2007, 20:39 You know the Offspring are still together and I think they have an album coming out in 2008. And as you probably know blink 182 split up into +44 and Angels and Airwaves.
I lost interest in the offspring after they came out with that very last album of theres, I don't actually listen to any "punk" music anymore, cos i believe thats what they used to be called...
And I don't like either of blinks 2 bands they've split into, shame really. Demandred December 2nd, 2007, 21:12 Muse, Linkin Park, U2, Foreigner, Queen, G&R, Daft Punk, Gorrilaz, Blues Traveler, Metallica, Disturbed, Black Eyed Peas, the list goes on....
Basically ABC as someone else said already.
For some reason I really dig Jukebox Hero when building and painting figs. Ultramoose December 2nd, 2007, 22:47 Muse, U2, Foreigner, Queen, G&R, Daft Punk, Gorrilaz, Blues Traveler, Metallica, Disturbed, Black Eyed Peas, the list goes on....

Jukebox Hero is an amazing song Brother Tiberius December 2nd, 2007, 22:51 The Used, Aiden, Slipknot, Cradle of Filth, Faithless, Exit Ten, Enter Shikari, The Clash, Souxsie and the Banshees, Rise Against...
im a conventional new age emo with house ties. lol:? Canuck December 2nd, 2007, 22:52 I lost interest in the offspring after they came out with that very last album of theres, I don't actually listen to any "punk" music anymore, cos i believe thats what they used to be called...

Ya i prefer Blink 182 to the new bands too. But +44 isnt half bad and Angels and Airwaves new CD called I-Empire is pretty good. I hated ANgels and Airwaves first CD though, I downloaded it and could barely get through the whole album. Seasonreaper December 2nd, 2007, 23:31 Gwar suites me just fine.
+1 Deadstar_MRC December 2nd, 2007, 23:43 Surprisingly enough, I listen to the radio for most of my painting music. I've never bothered with any of these mp3 players for some reason...
However, I will often put on a CD (or several) while I'm painting, and what I put on is generally determined by either what I want to listen to at the time, what I haven't listened to in a while, or something I think won't offend anyone else in the house at the time!
Dresden Dolls and Muse are generally on pretty high rotation, but there's a whole stack of other bands I listen to as well - mainly 'alternative' music, I guess. Jaffar_Hasad December 2nd, 2007, 23:51 I either turn on the radio to the alternative rock station. But if I really need some music I put in the Hybrid Theory cd by Linkin Park. Best CD in the history of... my collection :P Psyan December 2nd, 2007, 23:56 I like old school goth, industrial, ebm, psychobilly, rockabilly and some old punk and 80's stuff. I have project playlist on my myspace page, so I usually have that playing in the background when I paint. Some of the best songs I have on there for painting are "Let the Planets Burn" by Hanzel und Gretyl (I am a Chaos player, after all) and anything by Tiger Army, since the theme for my 40k Chaos army was inspired by them. Seanchadith December 2nd, 2007, 23:58 Yo escucho a programas de educacion: Espanol. Yo Estudio Y crear Orkos al mismo tiempo. Me gusta pintar!
Also, I enjoy books on tape. Tekore December 3rd, 2007, 00:56 I often watch television, but I do like to listen to music from time to time. I do love some Muse, Johnny Cash, and White Stripes.
Tekore croakies December 3rd, 2007, 01:33 Went from Gwar to Napalm Death. Either or, it still gets me through the paint sesh. Sister Bluebird December 3rd, 2007, 01:41 *see sig* stevoway2go December 3rd, 2007, 03:47 When the computer is available I'll put iTunes on random...
Various metal, ranging from older stuff like Judas Priest and Maiden to Black and Death Metal... (Nile, Deicide, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir...)
When it's not, I'll put on a cd...
My small pile that have relocated themselves from my overcrowded cd racks to my painting room are:
Slayer - Live, Decade of Aggression
Iron Maiden - Live After Death
3 Inches of Blood - Fire up the Blades
Death - Leprosy
Opeth - Deliverance
Metallica - ...And Justice for All
Daath - The Hinderers
Dimmu Borgir - Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia
Arch Enemy - Rise of the Tyrant. FINALLY got my hands on it. FANTASTIC album, AWESOME band.
Seems to be alot of fellow metal listeners out there in the WH universe... \m/ The Fifth Horseman December 3rd, 2007, 11:42 Ususally someting more or less close to the mindest of the army.
Whwn I was doing a Slaanesh Daemonette a while back, Riders of Doom from Conan the Barbarian OST and a pick from Inkubus Sukkubus and Evanescence
Sisters of Battle - Evanescence and various gothic/epic-sounding stuff
Space Marines - Manowar and Hammerfall plus a pick from movie soundtracks and TV show themes.
This said, when I'm especially low on sleep I might pop in some Viking Metal to keep myself awake - a few years back I was painting a certain Celestian Battle Sister for a contest and ended up painting till 3AM two days before the deadline. At that point, the playlist consisted of Death in Fire and a couple other tracks by Amon Amarth - anything less intense would end up with me falling asleep in front of my workdesk. Sir Theobold the Lame December 3rd, 2007, 13:24 Depends what mood im in, but generally its something quite chilled out: Kid Loco, Bent, Dusted, Tom Middleton stuff like that- i paint to relax so i like something chilled Canew December 3rd, 2007, 21:49 Depends on where I paint. At my gf's place, it's Sirius Boombox all the way, or any of the other techno stations, except. Chill. I listen to that too much when I'm NOT painting. :D
At home, my setup doesn't lend itself well to putting on the stereo (you'd have to see it), and I don't have an iPod yet, so that's out. I do enjoy almost anything musicwise, from The Crystal Method to old-school Metallica to Sting to Eric Clapton to Miles Davis. I also love lots of film scores, from Star Wars to Star Trek to Superman to Gladiator to The Hunt for Red October... well, you get the idea.
While I can't "watch" anything on TV, sometimes I'll run it in the background, usually with "CSI" reruns on. Often I'll pop in a DVD of a movie I've seen, and put on an audio commentary. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is interesting and entertaining. Gotta love Dom and Billy!
Lately, because it's one of my newer DVDs, I like "Casino Royale." I also just got my own copy of "Lawrence of Arabia" recently. Think that'll be next!
If only I spoke Japanese, I could play my samurai movies without looking at the subtitles. I love "Seven Samurai," and I still haven't opened the "Samurai Trilogy." Mmmm... good stuff. Swamp_slug December 4th, 2007, 02:51 I usually listen to Disturbed, Linkin Park, Funeral for a Friend, Biffy Clyro, Jethro Tull, Muse, Nickelback or Incubus. Although recently I've been listening to the Eagles, bought the new album recently and I can't bring myself to take it out of the cd player :| The Paint Monkey December 4th, 2007, 05:14 While I can't "watch" anything on TV, sometimes I'll run it in the background, usually with "CSI" reruns on. I do this a lot too! I think it's good for your eyes if you look up and focus on something else every few moments, too. Plus it's non-invasive if you do get into a real painting groove.
Music-wise, I spent all yesterday painting and listened to...
Beirut, Fun Loving Criminals (Mimosa, mostly), Muse, Faithless, Manu Chao, Scissor Sisters and Goldfrapp. I got quite a lot of painting done.
Clearly I don't fall into the rock/metal category that a lot of painters and gamers are in. I get a lot of my music from an Austrian radio station that I used to listen to when I worked in Europe. Now I can listen to the morning show in the evening (over here) and hear cool music while I paint or study. ;) Ultramoose December 4th, 2007, 05:22 I do this a lot too! Manu Chao is amazing...good call probablypike December 5th, 2007, 22:24 whatever I'm listening to anyways usually I suppose:
Queens of the Stone Age
Linkin Park
FFAF
Hoobastank
Lostprophets(older stuff)
...but it generally varies a bit more to stuff like dashboard confessional buttersthewarder December 5th, 2007, 22:50 Metal all the way.
Motley crue
Ramsteinn
Metallica
Korplikaani
Nightwish
and many various others Pierced53 December 5th, 2007, 23:24 I have honestly never listened to music while painting (O_O), presuming it would prove to be distracting. However, it appears that a lot of you paint better/faster while having some tunes playing, so I'll give it a go.

Go for it! A lot of painting is about patience and taking your time- music that you like will help you relax and get into the painting mind-set. I often find that hours fly past and suddenly it's 2 in the morning and I've got another painted squad! Inquisitor Blackadder December 6th, 2007, 00:01 Go for it! Heh, heh, heh. Countless times I have done that...only to find that ones homework hasn't been done...
Gah, the life of a student...too much work, not enough painting time(well, for me at least)

i fealt like such a crazy person why i was done lol Da Mighty Camel December 10th, 2007, 10:31 I usually listen to the radio since I don't have the computer in my room, and that's where all the music is. I never know what I might hear then (unless it is a theme show - obscure american ghetto-pop? Heck, why not!).
