I don't know 'bout the rest of you guys, but i can't get into a good painting swing without some decent music. For painting purposes, i like some upbeat folk music, memphis blues, and flamenco guitar.

I go with some Iron Maiden and I usually watch one of their concerts while painting.

Coheed and Cambria have been the sound of my latest marine painting operation

I most of the time just put my mp3player on shuffle and see what comes along. Though I often listen to podcasts or catch up with The Howard Stern show as I don't have time to listen to it every day.

From time to time I'll have a movie playing in the background, sometimes with director's commentary on it.

But as for music, it can vary from the Star wars soundtrack to some kind of deathmetal/grindcore band. Depends a bit on what I feel like.

Last time I painted for a longer period on the day I had some collection of medieval folk music playing

Normally it's some heavy metal. Often part of my Iron Maiden collection (17 albums and counting...) or Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Trivium etc. Sometimes I put a bit of rock on too like GNR or Muse...but it's normally metal.

Then, when I'm done painting I pick up my guitar and play some metal...

My iPod exists as a device that makes me do things faster (walk, paint etc) so it's normally on shuffle. If I really want to go faster then I put on a bit of J pop and sing along (this makes me faster for some reason).

Usually whatever my PC randomises, which has recently been a mix of Iron Maiden, Amon Amarth, Agalloch and the like, although G'N'R does come out sometimes ;Y.

I paint to the Starship Troopers soundtrack. It really helps me keep my Tyranids reasonably uniform. :)

I just set my player to shuffle, but make sure to leave out any songs that might be considered remotely funny as when I laugh, it throws off my brush control and has lead to some unfortunate accidents involving citadel paints and my clothes.

It can be anything ranging from good ol' battle metal(my fave) to film soundtracks including LOtR, 300 Pirates of the Caribbean

Ive noticed that. I can't listen to metal when i paint lol. i love it, but it makes me shaky with energy. lol. I like power metal for when im playing. its so epic.

i don't flamenco artists, for my flamenco needs i have a couple webradios i like so i dont usually see the names

I usually don't listen to music while I paint, but usually have comedy central or something on so i can give a quick glance up every once in a while. So many metal listeners! I don't think i could ever paint while listening to metal, that's just too crazy! Kudos to you guys who do!

I can and do happily paint along to metal like I said earlier. I love the music, I love painting, add together and I'm very happy. I don't often feel the need for headbanging or anything and if I did I would put the brush down first!

When I paint, I generally listen to an online radio channel called pandora.com, and end up listening mostly to metal (Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth, Rammstein)

For me I listen to good old Porcupine Tree. I really like the soothing music they do and the band is a very talented band (Gavin Harrison of the band got number 1 as best drummer in numerous drummer magazines and iirc got awards for his talent) and the singer is such an awesome song writer as well as a musician. And the rest is equally awesome. Yay for progressive rock :P

Can you post some of the artists you listen to? I like those genres too, but I've only heard them in bookstores and such.

For my part, I listen to a variety of things, from David Bowie and Depeche Mode to Gackt and J-rock. Basically, anything except country.

Anything to do with metal, industial, EBM, Goth. I'll probably listen to it.

Ya i prefer Blink 182 to the new bands too. But +44 isnt half bad and Angels and Airwaves new CD called I-Empire is pretty good. I hated ANgels and Airwaves first CD though, I downloaded it and could barely get through the whole album.

Surprisingly enough, I listen to the radio for most of my painting music. I've never bothered with any of these mp3 players for some reason...

However, I will often put on a CD (or several) while I'm painting, and what I put on is generally determined by either what I want to listen to at the time, what I haven't listened to in a while, or something I think won't offend anyone else in the house at the time!

Dresden Dolls and Muse are generally on pretty high rotation, but there's a whole stack of other bands I listen to as well - mainly 'alternative' music, I guess.

I either turn on the radio to the alternative rock station. But if I really need some music I put in the Hybrid Theory cd by Linkin Park. Best CD in the history of... my collection :P

I like old school goth, industrial, ebm, psychobilly, rockabilly and some old punk and 80's stuff. I have project playlist on my myspace page, so I usually have that playing in the background when I paint. Some of the best songs I have on there for painting are "Let the Planets Burn" by Hanzel und Gretyl (I am a Chaos player, after all) and anything by Tiger Army, since the theme for my 40k Chaos army was inspired by them.

Whwn I was doing a Slaanesh Daemonette a while back, Riders of Doom from Conan the Barbarian OST and a pick from Inkubus Sukkubus and Evanescence

Sisters of Battle - Evanescence and various gothic/epic-sounding stuff

Space Marines - Manowar and Hammerfall plus a pick from movie soundtracks and TV show themes.

This said, when I'm especially low on sleep I might pop in some Viking Metal to keep myself awake - a few years back I was painting a certain Celestian Battle Sister for a contest and ended up painting till 3AM two days before the deadline. At that point, the playlist consisted of Death in Fire and a couple other tracks by Amon Amarth - anything less intense would end up with me falling asleep in front of my workdesk.

Depends what mood im in, but generally its something quite chilled out: Kid Loco, Bent, Dusted, Tom Middleton stuff like that- i paint to relax so i like something chilled

Depends on where I paint. At my gf's place, it's Sirius Boombox all the way, or any of the other techno stations, except. Chill. I listen to that too much when I'm NOT painting. :D

At home, my setup doesn't lend itself well to putting on the stereo (you'd have to see it), and I don't have an iPod yet, so that's out. I do enjoy almost anything musicwise, from The Crystal Method to old-school Metallica to Sting to Eric Clapton to Miles Davis. I also love lots of film scores, from Star Wars to Star Trek to Superman to Gladiator to The Hunt for Red October... well, you get the idea.

While I can't "watch" anything on TV, sometimes I'll run it in the background, usually with "CSI" reruns on. Often I'll pop in a DVD of a movie I've seen, and put on an audio commentary. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is interesting and entertaining. Gotta love Dom and Billy!

Lately, because it's one of my newer DVDs, I like "Casino Royale." I also just got my own copy of "Lawrence of Arabia" recently. Think that'll be next!

If only I spoke Japanese, I could play my samurai movies without looking at the subtitles. I love "Seven Samurai," and I still haven't opened the "Samurai Trilogy." Mmmm... good stuff.

Clearly I don't fall into the rock/metal category that a lot of painters and gamers are in. I get a lot of my music from an Austrian radio station that I used to listen to when I worked in Europe. Now I can listen to the morning show in the evening (over here) and hear cool music while I paint or study. ;)

Go for it! A lot of painting is about patience and taking your time- music that you like will help you relax and get into the painting mind-set. I often find that hours fly past and suddenly it's 2 in the morning and I've got another painted squad!

I usually listen to the radio since I don't have the computer in my room, and that's where all the music is. I never know what I might hear then (unless it is a theme show - obscure american ghetto-pop? Heck, why not!).
