View Full Version : Girlfriends/Boyfriends that don't play. BrotherAzriel December 3rd, 2007, 19:15 Hey there, i thought id start this topic, beacuse of an event last night.
while i was playing 40k with my brother, i had a tactical sqd assault a falcon, in the hope of useing their krak grenades to do some damage, as i said, "ok, they are going to grenade it" my Fiancee turned, looked over, then said "how is he supposed to grenade it? hes plasitc isnt he?"
at first i thought she was having a laugh, but then, i realised she was acctuly serious!!!!
so!!! does anyone else have a non gamer partner or even parent etc who has come out with something like that?! Tekore December 3rd, 2007, 19:19 My wife tolerates my hobbies with good humor, but doesn't want to be involved. I think its good to have some hobbies and interests that don't intersect, and that you can do on your own. Wish I had a funny story though.
Tekore nillic December 3rd, 2007, 19:34 While my girlfriend doesn't play, she fully supports all my geeky hobbies (roleplaying, wargaming, etc) and even likes me to tell her about it. Then we watch anime together, and she's a model. Yeah....I feel pretty lucky8Y Inquisitor Blackadder December 3rd, 2007, 21:00 My other half has said a few things in the past like that, but I just find it funny, plus we share the same views on some things(people who take the game toooo seriously) but still. there was one thing she said once which left me speechless "Warhammer fantasy, Warhammer 40,000, they all look the same" She said it so seriously I couldn't help laughing! :D but thn i got ignored...:| danjones87 December 3rd, 2007, 21:10 My Girlfriend doesnt have any problems with the game, shes quiet interested by it sometimes but doesnt want to get involved. Ive had a few ex's who are very against it and told me to quit, so they didnt last long!
Dan grimmtu December 3rd, 2007, 21:16 My girlfriend (who's a professional chef, yum yum), takes it with good humor, and occassionally makes "Star Trek" jokes because that's what she calls everything "Sci-Fi" related (as a joke). But I make jokes about her stuff too. It's all in good fun. She's also artistically inclined so she does appreciate the modelling/painting process. D4RKN3SS December 3rd, 2007, 23:17 The difference between Blood angels and Dark angels - Ones red and the other green and wears a skirt. Her words not mine. . . nearly died when she said it!! kore December 3rd, 2007, 23:22 Though my wife will never play a MMO or tabletop game with me, she makes an effort to show interest in the things I do because, as she's explained, she like to hear me talk about the things I like to do (I can become very animated). theyak December 3rd, 2007, 23:32 My girlfriend declares on a regular basis that my car should be able to go faster on the freeway because its painted red. Enough said. CaptainCalvinus December 3rd, 2007, 23:50 My wife rolled her eyes when I told her that I was bringing my 40k army back to Maryland with me from home (California). Warhammer was something I was in to in High school, but she was never exposed to it until now (after being married two years...nice buffer!). So at first, she rolled her eyes, but now she seems interested in it. She too enjoys painting, so she can enjoy the art aspect of this. She even gives me tips on my paint jobs. She has yet to see me play though, and would probably prefer to be elsewhere... Otherwise, she's pretty cool that I'd rather spend money on an army addition than save towards a down payment on a house. Apoll December 3rd, 2007, 23:57 My wife supports me, and understands that when I buy something (even a paint) it's like "shopping therapy" for me. I appreciate it. She hasn't press me at all spending roughly £300 on Imperial Guard and not finished it actualy 3 years now :) (only 1500 points are done, and another 1500 in boxes sealed, not counting other army sets barely used/opened).
She always call my armies "little fellas" and she is showing some interest to make a dwarf army but always stall's it.
The best things she did was to demand from all her family to get me GW vouchers for presents on any occasion (Xmas, birthdays etc) and not wasting them on pointless stuff like DVD's, alcohol (I'm not drinking either way), slipers or books. kore December 4th, 2007, 00:52 She always call my armies "little fellas" and she is showing some interest to make a dwarf army but always stall's it.
My wife has our 3 year old calling them "Barbies". Tekore December 4th, 2007, 00:54 My wife calls has our 3 year old calling them "Barbies".
That is awesome.
Tekore Inquisitor Blackadder December 4th, 2007, 01:36 My wife calls has our 3 year old calling them "Barbies".
Hmm... now introducing Sisters of Barbie! Genetically modified to'entrance' enemy soldiers with their upper chest weapon rigs and then cut them down mercilessly with their power handbags and gloss stick bolters! They wear little armour as their faith in The Emperor is so mighty! (that, and He promised a little favour behind the Golden Throne after every victory...) 0::P grimmtu December 4th, 2007, 02:28 My wife has our 3 year old calling them "Barbies".
Just wait. Your kid will eventually go to Kindergarten and tell all his/her schoolmates "My daddy plays with Barbies." flameseeker574 December 4th, 2007, 02:52 Hmm... now introducing Sisters of Barbie! i smell rep;) Deadstar_MRC December 4th, 2007, 03:37 Just wait. Your kid will eventually go to Kindergarten and tell all his/her schoolmates "My daddy plays with Barbies."
;?
Oh, that's going to go down brilliantly!
Unfortunately, I don't have any stories of my own... But I'll keep reading these if they're as funny as they have been so far! crazedcucco December 4th, 2007, 03:48 I'm charismatic (won't lie), but my friends keep telling me I'd never get a girl to talk to me if I told them I played 40K, and described it. Not that it comes up in most discussions... Thedeadmonky December 4th, 2007, 05:37 well when i tell my friends in general about the hobby and stuff, they thinks its kinda stupid and stuff...but then i tell them about how i make $30 per model selling them on commission. you should see their faces lol omegoku December 4th, 2007, 10:10 My Girlfriend insisted I bring my army(ies) with me when I moved in with her.
She has no interest in it, but knows that I love it.
That said, she likes to call them dolls. My son is still too young to talk, so now that I've heard the barbie story I may have to be quick about it when he does start to.
Models, not dolls! Boomer December 4th, 2007, 12:01 My girlfriend is pretty colour about it, she is a make up artist so she
understands the basic ideas behind colours and painting schemes.
She really likes the models themselves and loves the art work in the
tyranid codex. But once she text me and said that she had painted one of my dreamstealers
for me and I had no idea what she meant till she sent a picture of a genestealer painted
very well. She also refers to my tyranid army as Red space dragons. Which is pretty cute.
And it was also her idea to name my two carnifexes buttercup and sunshine. Zemaphore December 4th, 2007, 12:20 My girlfriend tolerates it, she's ok with it but will never be WH-fangirl herself. :)
She's cool with it though, she even comes to the GW with me! :O Kich December 4th, 2007, 13:26 My girlfriend gives me minor mocking grief for it, but its only playful and I give her worse.
She once criticized my spending habits which resulted in a bit of an argument however it was quickly resolved when she surprised me with three kroxigors to add to my lizardmen army as an apology. BestLoser December 4th, 2007, 14:53 My girlfriend likes to call them action figures, will constantly ask me if I've died yet, and will get in on the gaming jokes. She wants me to buy her daemons (I play IG and DH, ironicly) but only because they look cool to her. She wont go to a GW store with me if I go to play, but will go to our local card shop that hosts 40k, but only because its board game night there. On the plus side though, she enjoys video games and MMOs, so I count myself lucky there. Stormchaser December 4th, 2007, 14:54 One of my ex's couldn't get her head around why I liked gluing together little grey men. The conversationwent something like this:
Her: "You clearly don't enjoy it."
Me: "What makes you say that?"
Her: "You don't smile when you do it."
Me: "You didn't smile in your dance show."
Her: "That's because I was concentrating."
Me: "Well I concentrate on this."
Her: "What's there to concentrate on? It's little plastic men!"
Needless to say the relationshio ended soon after. Meh.
My current girlfriend really enjoys building + painting stuff, even if she does poke me when I tell her to "leave it to dry." *Snikkers*
I'm trying to get her into playing, but she refuses to. And she can't ever tell me I've spent too much, cos most of the time, she's spent more on beads :D Uzi-99 December 4th, 2007, 22:06 My ex did appreciate the hobby, even though she didn't play... We just weren't otherwise compatible. Ah well, these things happen.
This thread just reminded me of a lecture I heard last summer at a local RPG/CCG/LARP/boardgame/miniature game convention, titled "Gamers and significant others"... Rather humorous, but with many hints of truth. =)
Anyway, partners could be divided into four categories, according to their attitude to gaming:
1. Partner shares the same hobby/game
2. Partner shares a similar hobby/game (say, you play GW games while partner plays RPGs, and yeah, the're are enough similarities to count ;))
3. Partner doesn't share the hobby/game, even a similar one, but is understanding
4. Partner doesn't have any interest or understanding towards gaming, and in fact is actively against it, saying things like "You should grow up" etc.
All had their pros and cons, although the cons heavily outweighed the pros on number 4... Some might even wonder who'd ever shack up with a number four, but I've seen it happen. When hormones kick in, good sense doesn't always keep up with them.
It was interesting to look at people's posts here and look at how the above list seems to hold true. :) BrotherAzriel December 4th, 2007, 22:20 mine falls into cat 3, she doenst have any intrest other than when i show here a particular model iv just painted exeptionaly or converted well, she doesnt mind if i go to my store to play or when i play with my bros!
Exelent, love her to bits i does.
but on occasion when she does try to understand she comes out with quotes like the one i stated this very thread with!!! ZenGamer December 4th, 2007, 22:36 My brother's girlfriend, last holiday season, went to the GW store and told the owner she was looking for a Venereal Donut... Translation: Venerable Dreadnaught.
Somehow he knew what she meant after she told him who it was for. BrotherAzriel December 4th, 2007, 22:37 ahh!
My missis asked for some Canadian guardsmen lol, good job the bloke knew what she ment! Misanthrope December 5th, 2007, 04:58 I tried to get my baby momma to play, but she has the attention span of a gnat. She gets on my back when I spend money buying stuff but otherwise usually just gives me my space and lets me play with my little toy men. magila December 5th, 2007, 07:03 I'm glad my girlfriend doesn't play warhammer because if she did i'd have to leave her for being a nerd. Vostroyan-Guard December 5th, 2007, 07:13 My wife has absolutely no interest in gaming. She's always asking me "what are you going to do with all of thos little men you paint?" But mostly she tolerates it as long as i tolerate some of her interests. Exarch Thomo December 5th, 2007, 07:27 my girlfriend is reasonably good with it all. Although she does come in every now and then and say "Are you still playing with those things?". But then, she's the sporty one and I'm the booky, nerdy, geeky one, so while she's off at soccer training...
Best part is she can't get up me for spending ridiculous amounts on the hobby, all you have to say is "how many shoes do you have?" (I mean she has 8 pairs of thongs - flip-flops for those not in Australia - 8! What do you need that many for???) Wundagore December 5th, 2007, 11:34 my girlfriend is kind off ok with it.
she studies , I paint or assemble my models.
but we don't really try to get involved.
it's good this way. you need to have space in a relationship
but on the other hand, my friend's mom calls it my animal zoo. ( i play tyranids ) omgitsduane December 5th, 2007, 11:43 I'm glad my girlfriend doesn't play warhammer because if she did i'd have to leave her for being a nerd.
HAHA! awesome!
My girlfriend isn't a fan of it, and doesn't see what I'm doing with it all, but on the other hand, she spends heaps of money on makeup, and she can't say its for me, cos she always wears the stuff, so we are even :P cept my warhammer doesn't make me look sexier.
At least she can be safe in knowing that warhammer is a repellent for women so I'll never find anyone but her :P kore December 5th, 2007, 18:15 At least she can be safe in knowing that warhammer is a repellent for women so I'll never find anyone but her :P
And that's the important thing. ;) BrotherAzriel December 5th, 2007, 18:44 haha you'll be in the dog house now for even admitting threre anyone better out there! omgitsduane December 5th, 2007, 20:50 haha you'll be in the dog house now for even admitting threre anyone better out there!
Haha, nah she'll never heard those words from my lips :P wntrrvn December 5th, 2007, 21:17 I actually met my wife through our rpg group (Playing the Dr. Who game actually), but has absolutely no interest in anything mini related. So while she is watching 'House' or 'ER' (she is a nurse, and loves to complain about what they are getting wrong on those shows) I work on my peoples.
Also my middle daughter is kind of interested in painting these things so that is something that we can do together. Well.. ok she can paint hers, and me mine, but still it's together. :) omgitsduane December 5th, 2007, 21:20 I let my girlfriend give painting an ork trukk a shot and she globbed on the paint so the details all over the gun turned into a bubble of paint, it was dry before I noticed, she was proud though so I let it pass. | |
