I'm curious who you think would win in a fight on a level playing field. No difficult terrain or anything. Just strait fighting.

Well Gandalf alone beat one... of course in the game it would crush almost anything.

Fellowship
Aragorn, Boromir and Gimli all in hand to hand rolling dice against the Balrog. Plus Aragorn gets a free might per turn where the Balrog does not.
Legolas and the Hobbits would be little help as would Gandalf after their fellows get stuck in the fight.

It depends on what gear the fellowship is equipped with. If you mean the fellowship as they were in Moria, then Aragorn would not have Anduril. If Aragorn does not have Anduril then none of the fellowship can really hurt the Balrog as he is defense 9 and their best strength is 4 (5 for Gandalf but he only has 1 attack). This would mean that they would need to roll a 6, then a 4 to wound. Gimli with his great axe would have the best chance of wounding the Balrog, but it still would not happen that often.
Let me do the math and actually see what happens:
On any given round the balrog will roll a 6 (and automatically win because he is fight 10) about half of the time. On the round where he does not roll a 6 we can assume that someone in the fellowship will roll a 6, as all together they have 15 attacks (a 93.5% chance, and they have might too). On the rounds that the fellowship wins and if all of them are alive they deal 1.42 wounds to the balrog. On the rounds that the balrog wins he will deal 2.66 wounds and depending on who he hits they will have fate to save them self. Total the fellowship has 18 fate (3 of them are Gandalf's reroling fate which I will count as a .75 chance rather than .5), which means they can ignore 9.75 wounds on average. Actually now that I do the math I can see them feasibly taking out the Balrog, and considering they cost 380 more points than he does they should be able to. I also did not include any bonuses for might into my calculations which could skew the battle in favor of the fellowship even more. It could be close if the Evil player is lucky and rolls tons of 6s in the fight.

It wound depend on how long some of the member lasted. If Gandalf could get some Immobilises in, then the weight of attacks means the Balrog would be hard pressed to win.
But it would depend on how many wound it can inflict. If it can bring down Boromir and Gimli early, it should do well. Bear in mind that he'll be rolling more 6s than not and from a gaming viewpoint, I think it's too survivable.
But I agree with frozencores point about the Fellowship being 380 points more than the Balrog. It will be a close encounter that could potentially swing either way.
*begins a simulation involving rolling for the combat 1,000 times.

You have to remember that the hobbits aren't very useful, So it's all in the hands of Aragorn, Gandalf, Gimli, Boromir and Legolas.
Heck, why not just add in some trolls too, because the balrog is outwayed in points.
EDIT: Just adding this in there, Aragorn did have Anduril in the books, so you can get away with it. Seriously, it's right there in the chapter after "The council of Elrond" or something to that extent. Then again, there were multiple cave trolls too, so yeah.
But the fact is it was in the books so you should be able to do it without any complaints.

I would have to say the Fellowship. That mountain of Might vs 0 on the Balrog(and I think even Sam has 1) is going to make a difference when the balrog doesn't roll a 6. Then the Fellowship gets double strikes if you have surrounded it(ow). True, the Balrog has awesome stats, and Terror at -1 Courage, but it will need some really good luck to get the Balrog out alive, both in combat and resisting Gandalf's spells.
