View Full Version : Why did you choose your army?

Was it down to the fluff and background? Maybe you like their overall colour scheme or battlefield presence? There are so many reasons to choose an army I can't list them here. Instead, i'll let you know why I picked mine...

I took Chaos as the majority of my favoured choices had already been taken by my buddies. Shit huh?

So why did you choose your current Army?

Reading the fluff read to mine, I had no idea at the time that in game Space Marines were overplayed, but I still love 'em.

Ask a lot of questionss, don't you Lee? ;)

I used to play HeroQuest and Chaos Warriors were bad-ass. Thus Fantasy Chaos.

Then I loved the variety of Dwarf models. Thus the Dwarfs.

And I liked the individuality of the SoBs. Thus the Sisters.

Almost entirely based on the models, not the game-play, as I don't play that much, but I love painting.

For me, I always like being the good guys, I can't describe it really.

It's the cool feeling where here is you're goody-goody army surrounded by darkness as a small prick of light, like the Stars in the sky. Fighting for their very survival against endless hordes of darkness, that's me! 8Y.

For Fantasy, I chose Lizardmen; the one main true 'good' army, where they are the Children of the Fallen Gods, they will succeed where the Old Ones will fail.
Plus, It's the First army I had when i started, I can't let go of them! lol

I've just started 40k and have only placed one game, but here are the things that attracted my overactive imagination towards the Tau;

First thing's first, I LOVE their Technology, and being a Technologist professionally, it seems that they have attracted my attention since their first release waaay back in 2001. Being that they're Tau, they don't stay in one place at one time too often. And so, they can still become that same "Prick of Light surrounded by Darkness" but more, well, dymanic and flexible:).
Besides, it's in my army's fluff...

My army came about as a result of several discussions on here and Warseer which shaped my view of the fluff. I chose the Chaos list to represent this fluff because it represented best (even after the new one came out) what I wanted to do with my army. I still eagerly await the release of Codex: Ruinous Powers and the rebirth of Furies. But I can wait.

EDIT: Lee Jerrum, you might want to edit the second-to-last word of your post. Forum rules and all that.

My armies are all chosen based on the relative coolness of the figures. Being a painter first and a gamer second, I'm firmly convinced that if you choose the army that you think looks coolest (or fun to paint), everything else (tactics etc.) will fall into place.

First army? Imperial Guard, for purposes of ordinance.

Hordes Of Chaos because when getting into fantasy I wanted an army that was the complete opposite of what I played in 40k.

Backup armies (both still in an embryonic stage,) Dwarfs and Tyranids, because they come in the boxed sets.

Because no-one likes the good guy, I choose chaos :)

I've started about 4 guard armies (the same one repeatedly) due to fluffy reasons but they never get anywhere...
In the case of my beastmen I simply love the old models and after an ebay binge can hardly not have an army of them.
Other times I like to make a small army based on a gimmick; they often do quite well, often crumble, it's always fun.
So fluff or models or gimmicks or a mixture of these. Not for play style as I'ld never get them painted with that attitude.

I go with armies that i like the look of. Generally ive actually had very little idea of the rules or how their playstyle before i bought my first models.

1st up were my Crons, id only had a GW intro game to 40K before i bought my 1st warriors.

I bought my Tomb King before id even played any fantasy! And now having moved on to beasts, again i went with a look i liked.

I like my army for the looks and the playability. But i'd rather have a good looking army on the battlefield that stinks than a really ugly one the performs well.

Although most of the time I go for the awesomeness of balancing those two out.:D

I chose my Deamonhunters 'cos they were relatively underplayed and I thought I would get a great sense of "uniqueness" through the ability to tailor the retinue's to my play style. Sadly that didn't pan out so I moved to Nids, the total antethesis of DH; 25 points a model down to 5. I have been in love with the Hive ever since.

I would get a Fantasy army if I thought I could ever comprehend the rules, probably the Skellies, but I don't think this is likely to happen.

I agree with you completely. I picked Skaven as my first army because painting giant bipedal rats was irresitable, and they had a variety of models. Then came Necrons when the new ones were released, and then Beasts of Chaos and now I await the 40k Daemon codex. All of the above have great models, and my choosing them usually coincides with a new release of minis, except for Skaven, they've always had a place in my dripping green heart. I am painter first, gamer second. LONG LIVE THE GREAT HORNED ONE!;?

My original reason was purely lame, but I'm sticking with it.

I originally began Catachan models in IG in high school because I was planning on joining the US Marine Corps after school. The Catachans looked most like Marines to me, so I went with them. Never played back then, only painted and made scenery. Now, six years later, I'm out of the Marines and back to playing. I'm keeping my IGs partially because I have too much to give em up and the other part is because I now reallize the TRUE similarity between the Catachans and the Marine Corps.

The true link is not in the muscle-headed oafishness (okay, maybe a little) but in the individual beligerance towards all authority. This was what I witnessed in the Corps and I see it in my Deathworld Vets.

Perhaps I like the idea of sending my officers to the front lines... ;Y

Space Marines, specifically Dark Angels, have been my constant favourite throughout my time collecting. however, I don't technically have a specific army although my Knights of Lion(formerly Knights of The Emporer) are growing...

I always choose on the basis of coolness of models and the good ol' marines have always stood out for me. Plus I'm terrible at painting any form of flesh.

I've always wanted to play a mech force and preferably not a MEQ one.

So when it came time to chose I decided I wanted a relatively underplayed army so I chose DE.

Besides, I do actually like the mdoels.

Cool models and current rules. the only armies that inspire me with the fluff has to be the LATD and orks.

I can distinctly remember answering this one before... Which is probably not that odd, as I've been around for a while. Found my first post on the topic from somewhere around 2004. ^_^;

I've always been interested in beasts, mythical or real, and specifically non-mammalian and non-avian creatures. Fish, insects, arachnids and reptiles is where it's at! I also like Alien, Predator, Mimic, Thing, Starship Troopers (I don't judge the book and film from the same standpoint and think both are good) and basically any movies/comics/stories with interesting or at least semi-well done monsters. Zerg are a lot of fun, and it's always nice if a game lets me play as an Alien-like creature and kill humans.

My original interest in 40K was also spawned by Space Crusade, sometime in the early 90s if I recall correctly... I saw a commercial around Christmastime which had this one guy dressed up as some sort of a 4-armed monster and although very cheesy, it did pique my interest. However, I couldn't find the actual game until a year or two later, and still have it around with all the bits intact (except one or two doors...).

Wasn't before I started roleplaying (pen'n'paper) at the tender age of 13 and saw GW products at gaming stores, including these very neat-looking alien thingies with sharp teeth on the cover of Advanced Space Crusade (IIRC) which were labeled as Tyranids. At around the age of 15 or 16 I bought the 2ndEd Tyranid Codex out of general interest towards everything monstrous and although they were pretty neat, there weren't any 40K players where I lived (nor did I have money) so it remained more of a curiosity.

It wasn't until the 3rdEd Codex that I got into the game, as the redone models were mostly good to excellent (except the goofy Guard) and I had moved to Helsinki with a far wider community of 40K players. Oh, and as I moved onto my own I didn't need to ask my parents to support my hobbies. =) Got a 3rdEd rulebook cheaply 2nd-hand, bought the 3rdEd 'Nid Army Deal and a whole bunch of models auctioned/2nd-hand, and now I got around three thousand points worth of army. However, this hasn't been wholly ideal: Practically all of my army is still unpainted as I just can't bear the thought of having to finish all these models, nevermind my plans for rather time-consuming conversions! That also quite conveniently answers any queries as to why I've never, ever posted any pictures despite being around the boards for years... In addition to a few personal problems regarding how I manage my time.

I've considered Tau, IG and SM (own chapter), but these thoughts are quickly dispatched due the fact even the 'Nids aren't finished... ^_^; However, even if I did choose to play secondary armies, the Tyranids would always remain as number one: a force of nature without ambiguous morals to be conveniently tossed aside, skewed ambitions to go awry, delusions of gradeur to be brutally broken. Neither good nor evil, but a cunning beast intent on survival.

'Tis the good old nids for me :). Ever since the new models from 3rd Ed. I've loved the lil critters, although it was the warriors and raveners that first caught my eye 8Y. Still love 'em now, especially the new 'fex and some of the great models put out by FW, notably the Trygon ;Y. Plus the thought of playing a swarm of merciless aliens out to devour all other species driven by a psychic superforce just sounds cool :rofl. Gotta admit that the Alien films have something to do with it though, aswell as my liking for Giger's works.

My first army was vampire counts and I chose them because I thought raising the dead was cool. A year later I picked up my first 40k army and spent more time thinking about what I wanted. I chose witch hunters because I liked their sinister, anti-hero fluff, because the models offered great painting opportunities, and because no one else played them, so they were unique. Since I started playing with them a few years ago others have picked them up too, so they aren't as unique as they once were. All my choices for armies since my original two have been because I liked the models and play style.

The first army I started was Tau in 40K. I think I got into the hobby just as the Tau were released, and so there was a lot of extra information about them in the White Dwarfs at the time. I think it was a combination of the models, and the high-tech nature of the Tau that drew me in. After all, who doesn't love big guns?

For some reason (most likely a lack of time and a lack of opponents) my Tau army sort of stalled and I decided to switch to fantasy, as I knew a few more people in my area that played Fantasy.

I considered the pros and cons of several armies. I'd decided I wanted to play a more evil force for some reason (perhaps because the 'good' armies just didn't seem as interesting) and ended up narrowing myself down to two options; Dark Elves and Vampire Counts.

I think I just liked the idea of a Vampire better. And then I chose Lahmia because I didn't particularly like the other Vampire models and the pictures in the Army Book of the Lahmia vampires just looked the best.

So I guess it was the 'feel' of the army (which probably translates to fluff) that first pulled me in, followed closely by the models.

Raven Guard FTW. I chose this armuse of the way it looked (colour schemes etc.) but when i was flipping through the marine dex i saw a picture of shrike and it was at that moment i knew.....

I always wanted to do Chaos, but my friend wanted to do them first so I decided to do a different army. However, as I was on the trip to the local GW to buy tons of stuff, he phoned and said he didn't want to do Chaos anymore, so I happily picked up a bunch of Chaos stuff and have never regretted it since, I think its truly the best army!

Space Marines forever!

I fell in love with Space Marines long ago when my neighbour showed me the Space Hulk game. And since I love the overall attitude and resilience (in fluff at least!) of the Space Marines, it's a simple choice.

Although, I seem to be able to identify more and more with the Ultramarines way of standardization. I just love to improve the way I do things to be as efficient as possible and repeat it on and on and on and on... :P

I started with the Orcs & Goblins because my brother was starting an Empire army and didn't want the Orcs in the starter set. After that I build my OG army to win... After that I started getting what I could for a deal. As far as 40k goes, I started with the boxed set for something new, and then got the Tau because I thought they were cool looking.

I started my first army after picking up wd 187 and it was the first release of dark elves, the models were cool compared to the other ones back then and they looked like a fun army to play. I now play Draves and I guess I picked them because they embody the sheldwall aspect of medieval war, also theyre short and are hard as nails!

Necrons... Not sure why... maybe fluff... maybe just cause I like the cold uncaring manner they carry with them regardless of the occasion be it a Bachelor Party, Beach Trip or Harvesting all Life.

Tyranids seemed really cool, and I liked the idea that I had a lot of control over how the army played. Now my gaming buddies claim I picked it b/c it's so overpowered and I wanted to win.

Weak.

My Necrons were basically assigned to me, because no one in my gaming group at the time played them, and they were going to be damned if another Space Marine player joined up. I stuck with the Necrons because I appreciate their flexibility. They are the army that I play the most.

I have a bunch of Blood Angels that I bought because I love the fluff, but I don't play them because I don't like being accused of being a power gamer.

I started Ultramarines for all the right reasons. (I.e., not because they are the default army. but because of their proud, martial nature.)

Dwarfs and Wood Elves I picked exclusively for the models.
