View Full Version : How unhealthy of a wargamer are you?

When I go to a club night I see people cram down tons of candy, microwave food, crisps etc., only to finish it off with a few litres of soft drinks. I usually drink a couple bottles of Jolt each gaming session and eat a pizza now and then as well as some candy, but I like to go and work out at a gym a couple of times every week.

So do you have any bad habits while getting togheter to practice the hobby? Are you perhaps one of those that like to go down to the pub after a club night to down a couple of beers and talk about the ups and downs of the latest games? Perhaps you are breathing pure caffine because of all the coffe you have pured into your poor, poor body?

So let us here your bad habbits. :D

Our local shop is 200 yards from The Golden Arches. I have to excercise serious will power to make sandwiches before I go! Invariably, I end up purchasing a Sprite or something tho, it enables me to justify using thier "facilities" ;)

hahaha, i'm a vegetarian, that immediatly reduces the bad food quotient ;)

Or so you would think, i eat loads of patato chips and a drink way too much dr pepper. I also like pizza a bit too much, and even without meat, eating pizza 3# a week ain't good :P

if left to fend for myself, i often turn back to my natural eating habbits. a large meat feast pizza and as much diet coke as i can drink without drowning. that would my stable daily diet. But my girlfriend is very good at making me eat 'other' foods which truthfully i dont really enjoy but i guess i cant moan if she makes it for me. i dont really eat when i playing (much to busy trying to keep track of all my nids bio morphs) but last week i did have a small donna kebab on the way home.

I always avoid anything "light", in my mind, that's many times worse than the real thing!

HeZu is right of course:)

Those diet-things are really misspeled, it should read die-coke:) Aspartam is far worse than sugar, which is of course pretty bad too.

I don't have any bad food habits as I hardly eat:) But admitingly everything I do is done in combination with Snus, Cigarettes and Coffe...so I guess that fills the void.

I go through phases of apathy and activity.
I love cooking - but it can be a bit demoralising to cook for yourself.

So, sometimes I end up going to the local chippy and drinking Dr. P.

Normally, I follow what my body desires though.. so sometimes end up eating just apples and raw broccoli.

Yum :)

I always think that you should just consume the "normal" version, just not too much of it. 1 glass of coca cola a day will not kill you.

After 1 glass of diet coke though, you just want more sugarry crap.

My research has shown that rolling a single die burns between 1-6 calories. Add up all the dice I roll during a game and we are talking some serious physical exersion!

Best to stock up on foods with plenty of energy. You don't want to risk passing out from exhaustion in turn five do you?

I've certainly noticed the unhealthiness of a lot of gamers. My wife noted that I shouldn't game at one club in the area because if the other patrons got up enough energy, they might try to eat me. I do cook most of our food, and exercise three to five times a week. The only quick place to eat around where my gaming store is though is McDonald's, and that can be rough on game nights.

I find the best approach is to get your opponent to proxy his army with items from the KFC menu, upon their death you consume them, this works particularly well if you havent eaten for days, creates very powerful gamers :) as an added nicety you return home afterwards miraculessly smelling of lemons much to the delight of she thinks she is obeyed whio has been whinging for months that you needed a shower

glad to see there's at least one other dissenting opinion (waves at tekore) At the GW where i typically play (big mall) the food court is roughly 10 steps away from the store. Thankfully, i've now come to realize that my stomach takes great offense to most of the food served there, so if i want to have a complete game, and not have to take 3 bathroom breaks, i eat well (before i go)

When i have my buddies over for home games, i make dinner for everyone, typically something tasty but healthy (thai curry, vegetable soups w/ sandwiches) etc.

I think i'm just so burnt out on junk food after college that it doesn't come naturally.

Only problem is when my wife decided to up and bake a biovore cake :)

I do this often too, i like cooking and it saves the bother of figuring out where too eat = living in a small village this means french fries and other deep fried crap which is nice sometimes, but not every bloody time. :P

What can I say? I'm a student. With the money I spend on Warhammer I tend not to budget for food very effectively so there are times when I will just eat pasta for about a week before finally deciding to eat pizza instead to fill that gaping void in my soul. I enjoy fruits and stuff when I can get them, but sadly they're rather expensive around these parts. Yeah, my diet is pretty poor...

Fortunately I have mandatory PT sessions every weekday morning. Most of the other regulars are around twice my weight though and practically huff and wheeze just carrying their stuff in. One member claims to have dropped some weight just by playing a Wii though. It can't be verified for now. If true thats pretty sad.

Well, I try to take care of myself, going to the gym 2-3 times a week. So does the gf, and she drags me (yeah, yeah, it's for my own good, blah blah) on at least one "power walk" around the neighborhood over the weekend. Foodwise, the gf doesn't cook much (but she's a VERY good baker! Mmmmm), but she and I, while in halfways decent shape, are trying to get better by eating a little wiser (no appetizers/desserts when we eat out, etc.).

Bottom line, I kinda OD'd on junk food in college myself, and happily I don't really use gaming as an excuse to abandon that. I only get to play on Thursdays and Saturdays. The Thursday nights are after work, maybe once a month at most. I buy two slices of cheese pizza around the corner before a game, and that's pretty much it. On Saturdays, I go to another place (long story, that), and this is AFTER eating breakfast and/or lunch elsewhere, so I don't munch anything, good or bad, over a game.

I do drink a lotta diet soda, which the gf is trying to break me of. If water wasn't so darned bland, I'd drink that, but...

Hahahaha, i don't wanna highjack this thread, it's just that every posters has something to say i agree with (or at least have an opinion of ;) )

I can't drink water either, unless i'm really thirsty or not paying attention, i am learning to drink it though, by constantly taking little cups of water at work.

I'm pretty good on average, I do an hour to an hour and a half of weights at gym or at home (depending on the weather) I also walk everywhere. As a result if I get stuck into a pizzqa or take away chinese or indian when i'm having a game I don't feret over it much.

Same here to the above. Although i dont know ifits healthy, i tend to work out once a day, if not at least 3 times a week. I'll eat pretty healthy at home, because i know when i get to my friends house, we'll be cramming down fruit by the foots and lays potato chips all night. So, its sort of a....justification system? where i can eat crappy, only after working out and eating well.

1-6 calories??? I suppose that that might be true for very important dice rolls that you shake your fist wildly for, fling the die across the room and spend five minutes looking for but generally methinks not.

As for me I eat good food, but not enough and garbage to make up my nesiscary calorie count. There's a real joy to being able to buy loads of really cheap doughnuts and know that they are not really bad for you (well maybe just a little).

The problem is, its quick, easy and lets us stay wrapped up in our games(bad food that is).
THEN usually we all take a trip to somewhere horrible like Denny's to top it all off. :X
I try my best not to eat too many sweets and stuff while playing by going and getting "semi-healthy" stuff
flike beef jerky(ok, not so healthy) and bottled water.

Except there is calories as measure of energy, then theres Calories, measure of which the body has to burn to get rid of things like fat.

I game near a place call Liqouri's, good food, UNHEALTHY food. Worse than that, cheap food too. I can get a 8in Sub of whatever thats cheaper than a Big Mac.

They're the same thing. 4.2 Joules as I recall, the energy required to raise 1cm(cubed) of water by 1 degree (C or K).
When talking about their intake in terms of food one will usually use Kilocalories which are then abbreviated to Calories.

My bad habit tend to be laziness. I work out in a chunk of time, but it bores me after awhile. That's generally coming back to bite me in the you know where with all of the time I spend at my martial arts school. It's been around since at least the late 1980s in the US, which is the last time I recall ever drinking it. I don't know the exact amount of sugar and caffeine, but rumors and marketing at the time had people believing it contained several times the amount you'd find in Mountain Dew, the soft drink that had the heaviest concentration of both at the time.

It basically tastes like... cola. Very, very very sweet cola. Nauseatingly sweet.

And yes, it has essentially the same effect that Red Bull or other "energy" drinks have today. Gives you a big burst of energy (hence its name), then you crash. Hard. It's pretty vile stuff, actually.

Nope, since it can be balanced by an extra dose of insulin. However, if you mis-calculate and the dose is too small, the side effects are quite unpleasant (they kick in after about an hour if your blood sugar is over 200 mg/dl, ie 2x the norm).

I eat lots of red-meat (barely cooked,) drink lots of caffiene (coffee... mmmm,) smoke lots of cigarettes, and I usually hit the bar before going to GW on 40k night. I'm not too drunk when I play, but no one every said they thought otherwise, especially when I rarely loose a game. I don't go to the gym to work out, but I wear 30lbs of gear on me a day at work and I usually go up/down 8-12 flights of stairs a day.

Maybe the poor diet of most gamers is responsible for the odour that seems to hang around at most of the GW stores?

Hmmm. I try to eat well, gotten much better at it when I realised how much cheaper it is to buy and prepare your own food instead of eating out. I only eat meat once a day, if at all. Exercise occassionally, but walk almost everywhere I go since I neither have nor need a car. So you'd think I would be in pretty good shape with lots of money, however, any benefits are wasted every weekend on beer and liquor.
