I have a concept for an Imperial guard army, I'd convert every soldier to have a full face mask, and a long coat, because it looks cool.

----

Planet
Toruss is a desert death-world which is actually uninhabitable by humans, it has ashen terrain as a result of it's extremely thin atmosphere, due to the sun being un-resisted. The surface pepperd with dome cities, due to it being the only planet capable of supporting them within a reasonable distance of their original home world, which they were forced off by an asteroid striking the surface, and throwing it out of orbit. They wear the face masks because they need life support systems to walk outside the cities and be able to breathe properly, and also because in the sunnier areas, the sun rays are blinding.
Due to their isolation, they barely have any advanced technology, and rely on strong alien mounts, called Jolhei, for transportation between cities, and moving heavy items around.

Lifestyle
The inhabitants of Toruss are quite adept at using cover and camouflage to get around undetected, the beasts they have to hunt for food are enormous, and have only a few weaknesses, the best of which is poor immune system, due to largely lacking atmosphere, they don't really need it. They poison food, which kills the beasts, some squads have begun to plant remote explosives however, mainly for the fun of blowing it up.
Every person who is not involved in the military is either an engineer, a farmer (either atmospheric or food), or something else which is necessary, dome-cities require a lot of maintenance to function properly.

Military
Many of the units deployed are Veteran soldiers, they are very successful hunters, and have fought many battles defending their homes, mainly from the safety of cover, firing upon enemy units using powerful weaponry.
The foot soldiers use a vox network to communicate, such a low density atmosphere doesn't allow for sound to travel far, so it's a near necessity.
They favor mortars, such long range ordinance is especially efficient in their low-gravity environment, for the same reason most regiments field a Basilisk, for long range anti-tank fire support.

----

That's the fluff I came up with, I've designed the uniform, the "alien mounts" (they're cute!), and a part of their language.

Helmet.
Front view, it seals the face so there can be a solid oxygen supply.
From the back it's a Cadian helmet.

Uniform, cadian, with the helmet and a long coat, which will just be greenstuffed on.

The Jolhei, the alien mounts.
I'll get the plastic horses from fantasy, take the back half off and sculpt each one from there.
*shudder* So much work...

Edit: That's an underneath view of it's right foot, the spike is, in fact, a spike, for hurting things with.
Edit 2: Those things on it's neck are Gills of a sort, the low-density atmosphere requires a more efficient breathing organ.

Who thinks what about all this?

the mounts remind me of tauntauns from starwars. But very strong fluff and good ideas. A+

Yeys!
I came up with most of the fluff (the bit between the rows of dashes) in about 15 minutes, while writing it in that other thread.

After a few random designs.
*ahem*

I came up with this, the final copy of the Jolhei, I decided it should have a snout, as it needs to sniff out underground vegetation (piggy!), and there were a lot of balance issues with the bipedal design, mainly because of the rider sitting on it, so I added in a third leg. It's ears are now holes, because in the low density environment sound doesn't travel well, and noises cannot be distinguished, merely detected, so it doesn't need big fluffy ears.

IT is one of the most beautiful creatures I have seen.

I think tyhe third leg is a bit weird, how about the creature actually sits HIGH up on its legs, like a bear? so its balanced a little bit better, if not then a long straight tail like a trex.

I don't want it to be really heavy though, the terrain it's walking on (ash effectively) cannot support such heavy loads, all it needs is even distribution of weight.
And it's a horse, if he stands up then they can't ride him...

dude, this should be in the fluff or IG areas, but nyway....

im likeing the fluff, got any more conversions??? as for face masks, try cadian rebrether heads from forgeworld.

I didn't want to use those, they're isolated from the imperium, and they developed them themselves.

I don't have any conversions, just designs.
I won't start on this for a long while, I've got a Tyranid army to do, and I take forever to paint.

I do however have a lot of fluff written up, which is largely Scientific jargon.

Toruss is a planet which is slightly smaller than mars, orbiting its local star at roughly 190 million Kilometres, this leads to extremely low temperatures, and takes 2256 hours to fully rotate so all of the surface is exposed to the sun. The periods of sun exposure and lack thereof are named the 'Bright' and 'Dark' seasons.

The planet has a very thin atmosphere, meaning that it has low gravity (approximately half that of Earth), and a very low oxygen supply (about 0.52%). Due to the thin atmosphere, little of the sun rays are blocked, leading to a charred surface, however, due to the long period of darkness (about 30 days) between periods of intense light, there is slight vegitation growth dueing the dark seasons.

The native fauna hibernate during the bright season in caverns a few metres below the ground, awaking in the dark season to feast upon the vegetable regrowth. The flora also hibernate during the bright season, with all but their roots being burnt by the sun rays, these extend into the water table, and sustain them for extended periods.

The native fauna all posess a strange breathing apparatus, similar to gills, it is intended to catch oxygen particles in an organic net of sorts, this allows the creatures to filter a higher amount of oxygen from the air however, to supplement the still low oxygen intake, they must burn an incredible amount of energy.
This is made possible by what is essentially a special gland which can convert carbon into oxygen, burning large amounts of energy in the process.

The humans of Toruss originally lived on a planet in the same solar system, which supported life very well, but a meteor approached the planet, threatening to throw it out of orbit, it was promptly evacuated.
The only planet in the system even vaguely suitable for colonisation was Toruss, which was only usable due to the possibility of terraforming.

The people established their dome cities, calling them Havens, housing areas of ground hooked up To atmospheric regulators, allowing the people to live in relative comfort. However, due to their isolation from the imperium, they began to run low on supplies, and their agriculture wasn't fully established yet, the regulators were running out of oxygen and coolant, so they expected the worst, only to be discovered by a passing Eldar explorer vessle.

The vessle established contact with their leaders, communicating by telepathic means, and made a deal, they would supply them with what they could not supply themselves, in exchange for alliance against any enemies they encounter. This was agreed upon, not only for the lack of choice, but the people had been isolated from the imperium for so long that they had no prejedice against the Eldar people.

So the, now Torians, continued to build their Havens, they developed portable life-support systems, explored the planet, began to hunt, and cultivated the peaceful Jolhei, a native creature, strong enough to use as a mount.
The Eldar led any invaders away from their homeworld, towards Toruss, and were aided in war by their human allies. The bond between the two cultures grew, but not so much for the Eldar to truly trust the humans, who are, after all, still savages.

The 7th Haven to be built was the largest, the capitol of Toruss, it spawned a military Regiment, and was labelled as 'Tirou', which translates directly into 'Stable', but is intended to mean 'Hope'.

Is the bit with the Eldar even vaguely plausible?

Tirou Mounted and light infantry.

Commanded by Colonel Zor'hesh
Infantry commanders Lieutenant Bak'nal, and Lieutenant Yak'reim.
Heavy weaponry commander Lieutenant Ai'solal.
Mounted commander Colonel (HI, maybe) Tenna'suor.

Doctrines:

Rough Riders.
Heavy weapon platoons.
Light infantry.
Veterans.
Cameleoline.

Cadian bodies, every model with full face masks, which I will convert, the leaders will probably just have rebreathers though, because they'll look important.

Most of the units are trained hunters, using stealth tactics to advance ahead of the main force, the rest trained to fire and maintain large weapons, primarily large laser weapons and mortars.

The Regiment was developed under the name of Tirou, the capitol, and largest Haven built on Toruss. It is the only military Regiment currently under operation on the planet, and represents the hope and aspiration of all Torian people that their society may once again ascend to the glory it once was.
