about 2 months away is a 'ard Boyz tourney. Never been to one but from what I gather it's a cheese list fest. But is it a cheesey tactics too? There's a difference and I want to know what to expect because it's possible to make cheesey list without using cheesey tactics but it's also possible for the same army to use a totally different list that's cheesey using cheesey tactics.

for instance Night Goblins with Fanatics aren't horribly bad but if using cheesey tactics it's a different storey.

Cheese is an overused term. For those that overuse it, you will find both at an 'Ard Boys tourney. Generally, at a tournament, with exceptions, people want to win. They will do what it takes to win and they will field armies that can win. The only mitigating factors are sportsmanship scores / paint scores, and sometimes that'll trim the oft-and-overused "cheese" out of things.

The thing about 'ard boyz though is there is only a VP score. There are no painting and sportsmanship scores.

I would say go, if for the only fact that 1) there are cool prizes 2) how many times do u get to field a 3500 point fantasy army? and 3) you get to play people you probably haven't played, especially if you top 3 and make it to the semi-finals.

Why not to go? I had a really bad experience with the 40k 'ard boyz tournament semi-finals last year. One reason is because 2 of my opponents had yet to discover deodorant. The big reason, however, is that the judges and guy that ran it didnt go to each board beforehand and say what size each terrain was and what cover save it offered. This meant that before the game even started i had to pull out the rulebook against shooty armies that wanted hills and other things on the table to be size 1 or 2 when they were obviously size 3. Even then the ref came over and said "roll for it". -_- It was just a bad experience but that was mainly because it wasn't run very well.

Still, its 3500 points, its free, and there is some good prize support for it (1st place at the semi-finals got a 3000 point army of their choosing). So you should go, but expect to see competitive lists. I would also check out the rules on GW's site in case they limit special characters, choices, armies, etc.

By it's very nature a 'Ard Boyz tournament is the chance to make the biggest, nastiest list you can dream up. This means it is more likely tempers will flare and rules will be argued feverently. The key I think will be to keep a cool head about you and just play to have fun first, crush your opponent utterly and without mercy second.

Though I am curious now who else plans on participating in the 'Ard Boyz in April. Myself, I plan on playing my Tomb Kings.

Thanks for the advice on the rules. One thing I noticed is that DOW aren't being allowed as an army but Chaos Dwarves are. It doesn't say anything about if DOW are being allowed in armies.

TK is a good choice as they are an army that is only going to get better with more points. some armies seems to platue with higher points.Ogres, certain chaos, swarm Skaven/night goblins and such armies come to mind.

I wouldn't worry about anything being too cheesy. I'd just build a competative list made to win and have fun, that should be able to take on a variety of enemy armies.

Just remember, there's no crying allowed at 'ard boyz.

Even if some guy brings nothing but Imperial Guard conscript squads in a special mission, and proceeds to coat the edges of the game table with them all standing exactly two inches apart. :|

Think of it as sort a warhammer or 40k 'exam.' Its about your ability to fight and fend off whatever gets flung at you, using all your own twisted, tactical strengths.

Last 40k HB I was had...
1.) Armored Company.
2.) 2 Nid Zilla Lists (the winner was a fairly inventive one consisting of 6 carnifexes, a flyrant, and a metric assload of gargoyles).
3.) 3 Daemonbombs.
4.) Drop pod lists.
5.) Huge conscript squads.

And so on and so forth. Its not limburger, precisely, but you're going to have a run for your money.
