I think pretty much everyone does. Look around online, there are sites which sell GW stuff at 10% or even 25% discount (I found the 25% last night... shouldve bookmarked it lol)

yay! another GW overpricing thread! :|

No offence Billy, but every couple of months someone starts up a thread like this, It's kind of old news really. Yes they are probably charging more than they have to for some Kits, but if you consider how effort they have to go to outside of buying plastic and pumping into molds then you realise why they aren't making huge profits off kits.

I too believe that GW would get a lot of respect if they did maybe curb there price hikes a bit, and maybe base prices off what is in the box, rather than it's point value in a game ( eg. almost all character blisters, Vampire Blood Knights etc.) admittadly this would see a shift towards uber armies, but I think this OK.

If you really don't want to pay there prices, try independent retailers as mentioned, They are often a bit cheaper. Alternatively try playing non-GW games and you will begin to realise the pros of warhammer (such as Plastic models and games bigger than skirmish scale).

I'll chime in here too...they are just a bit crazy on their pricing. Thankfully, our local GW has a policy that gives you a nice discount ($15) for every bill you drop there. I've gotten quite a lot of stuff so far completely free because of that :)

Just to chime in here with one comment - I don't think in game price of units in points affects the cost of units one jolt. Just look at tyranid gargoyles - cheap gaunt units at £8 for 2 - totally mad price for what you get in an in game model.
Generally though the characters are more expensive because they are either slightly larger models or more detailed - plus GW attach thier own concept of worth to metals.
The worst news is that with China and India advancing rapidly world metal prices are going up - I don't know how vulnerable white metal is to this, but you can be certain that it woun't start a GW price drop

Well yes thats true, espacially where metal models come in to play vs plastic BUT for instance Plastic terminators are significantly more than Tactical marines, even though they are no more 'detailed', and they create less models and in fact use less sprues / material., they are more expensive because 5 termies are worth more than tactical marines in game. same goes for say plastic cavalry vs infantry in Fantasy armies, or the weird price differnces on the different Rhino Chassis models (exorcists excluded for obvious reasons)

Gargoyles could so easily be made into a plastic box at say 10 for the price of a regiment box, but GW probably don't see enough of a market for them, as they arn't really that good in game which would explain why it hasn't been done.. (theyre Okingame, but not many people would want say, 30 of them)

And Reality, while Character models may have a few more hours spent on them than normal troopers, they are still cast at the same quality, and the minute difference in production (ie the few extra hours wage for the sculptor) doesn't really justify the massive price gap, espeacially when distributed over 10s of thousands of units.

You're paying for a piece of commercial art & design, as well as the opportunity to participate in a particular community/subculture. The cost of raw materials and production has nothing to do with properly setting the price. It's about gauging the popularity of a particular design, the information you know about your customer's spending patterns, and the entry cost and desirability of membership in the 'community.'

Basically it comes down too "If you don't like the prices, don't do the hobby." If you didnt like the prices that much you wouldnt be staying the hobby would you? So yeah, if you hate the prices that much stop buying it.

I hate the prices, but the way I see it, I've already put so much in this that if I give it up now I've wasted a hell of a lot of time and money on something that will sit in my shelves... Sure I'd like them cheaper, it WOULD bring more people around, afterall, it turned me off the hobby for almost 8 years but I can't see them wanting to help us with price cuts.

Hi,

If you think GW prices are expensive, try living in a country that doesn't have a GW presence. We have to import everything. Shipping can easily add 50% onto your total army cost. This results in us resarching our armies to death before we purchase a single figure. I've seen 2000pt games where there was not a single actual figure on the table - carboard pieces. Old mobile phone as a tank, etc etc.

At the clubs I play at, there has been a lot of debate over the years about figure prices. If you look at something like Warhammer Ancients / DBR / DBM etc, the figures are cheaper. But on the other hand, there might only 2 or 3 different styles of foot figure to choose from in an army. The Romans all look like clones. So GW wins on that account due to the choice and variety in figures.

Whenever my wife complains about the price of the hobby (about every 6 months or so), I take her to the local sporting megastore and show her the prices of golf clubs. For a single driver I can get another complete army. It stops the debate there and then, for about 6 months. :)

Heh, I kinda know what you mean. It is actually cheaper to buy from GW US or UK AND pay the postage than it is to buy a lot of kits straight off the GW shelf in Australia - kinda messed up, wouldn't you agree.
But then judging these other posts, we must get more material per sprue in Australia than the other countries - especially those with a factory. :P

The thing is, once you have a decent sized army you can stop buying stuff if you like.

I have spent a lot of money on this hobby over the years and have built a few sizable armies. Most of the models I have are rarely if ever used.
Last thing I bought was a Tau Skyray, it is still in its plastic wrap some 7 months later..
Apart from codex and rule books I don't spend much at all.
GW is very good that way in keeping most models playable even after updates.
