View Full Version : 40K in a flash

So here I go on for discussion. These topic has been festering for a bit, and though I may know the answer, but I can't verify it.

If you read into 40K in a flash it says no more then 50pts on wargear.

Now, in my armory section of my codex, it has weapons, and wargear. It goes on to outline that you may not have more then 100 points of wargear per character. And then it also says all wargear and weapons chosen must be represented on the model.

The codex makes this confusing as to what is wargear, and what is not. Characters may take anything from the armory, but then the armory looks like it makes a distinction between weapons and wargear. Along side that, it only gives a stipulation on how many weapons one could have and how much wargear one could have.

So, what is defined as wargear?

The other issue I have is 50pts of wargear. Is that to the unit or the entire army. How have you played this? I figure that is up to the one organizing the campaign to come to a rulling.

Wargear is everything in armory that is not weapons.
And I believe the 50 point limit is per character.

Actually an interesting question, as the last couple Marine Codicii (Chaos and Dark Angels) don't really have an armory. I suppose for them, any upgrades would count towards the limit.

For armies that still have armories, weapons taken from the armory do count towards wargear limits, unless you take master-crafting. Limits are typically applied on a per unit/character basis.

Just out of curiosity then, where does the old Wargear book (that included weapons in it...) come into the stand?

I've only flipped through it, but a lot of the options and entries in it are obsolete and incorrect. As codex after codex has been updated the wargear book ceases to be a legal and accurate source for information, you always use the latest source for rules whether it is BGB or Codex - it would be like trying to play a 4th ed list with 2nd ed wargear and options.

'Wargear' is a term that is used by GW regularly as a description for upgrades and weapon options.
However, although their intentions are quite obviouse, GW is extremely inconsistent with how they represent this catagory through out the codecii.

For example, in alot of the older codecii (IG, Deamon Hunters) wargear, psychic powers, one handed weapons and two handed weapons are all seperate catagories within the Armoury section.
So, in this situation you could rightfully choose 50pts of 'wargear' and as many weapons and psychic power upgrades that you please.
It is logical to asume that there intention is to also limit the weapons upgrades as well as the war gear,so it is perfectly reasonable to put this question forward for debate Seeker84.

In some of the newer codecii (Orks, Chaos) there is a Wargear section that is broken down into weapons, armour and special equipment but there are no point costs listed. Now, in the Army List section each unit has their wargear listed, but all available upgrades, with their point costs, are listed under the heading 'Options'.
Obviously, GW intend that the amount of points spent on these 'Options' should be limited to 50pts for 40k in a flash.

As a side note, Tyranids dont even have wargear so I guess one could take as many weapons symbiotes or biomorphs as one wants.

Anyway, I think that 'Wargear' is a redundent term that has far too many interpretations. If all of the codecii are different in their reading of the term, then I think that we must treat each army differently with regard to this rule for RAW and tournaments.
However, I think it is obvious what GWs intentions are and friendly games should be played with the right intentions and logical interpretations.

Lol, I didn't by any means intend to give the impression that I felt the admittedly obsolete Wargear book was in any way a legal game reference. I merely brought it up as an example of GW's thinking at the time and how it might or might not figure into this particular discussion since the title of said publication is/was what it's centered on. My apologies if a different inference was made :)

Also @ Plasma Catcher: As I was reading through your post, the very same thing came to my mind...Tyranids! Then I saw your mention of them and chuckled. You could look at that way, or given an EXTREME interpretation, even insist that since they don't have any 'wargear', per se, then they would not be allowed to spend that 50 pts on anything! A tad out in left field, but I could honestly see someone out there arguing for it...

Hey,

what is defined as wargear?

Wargear is stuff Characters can get that squaddies can't.
Ex1: A Vet Sgt's Bolter isn't Gear, but his Fist is.
Ex2: A Plasgun isn't Gear, but a Combiplas is.
See the connection?

It's basically a limit on Characters in a small force.

Is that to the unit or the entire army

50pt per list. That's a pretty high percent of the limit, after all.
