I have painted 2 bases. A desert theme and a winter theme:

This one was painted Graveyard Earth, then inked with chestnut ink, then kommando khaki and then bleached bone

Here's the winter one:

This one was painted black and then highlighted to a very light grey

And together for comparison:

Which one do you guys prefer? I'll probably add some rocks to the desert one/snow to the winter one.

Out of the two, Desert.

If you are serious about doing winter-y themed basing, you really need to be doing snow.
I'd reccomend a mix of Baking Powder, PVA glue, water, and a teeeeeny tiny bit of blue ink (or blue paint).

As far as the desert goes, think about adding stuff like scrubby grass or bushes, bleached animal skulls etc etc.

Should be fun.

What army is it for? That might help in your decision... At any rate both bases are very basic in appearance - meaning they both work. My only comment is what makes the grey base winter? You don't necessarily need snow but it should tell a story. Wintery shrubs, etc. to lend to the idea that it is a wintery dead surface. Otherwise it looks like rock to me.

These bases are for my new Orks. As I said earlier (I think....:D) there will probably come some snow/rocks on the mountain/winter type and some rocks/desert stuff on the desert one. The point with Orks is that they can go everywhere so I can't really choose...
