My first suggestion is to go to your store and nab the colors that are one shade lighter than what you have. Blood red for the red gore, and probably enchanted blue I think for the midnight blue. Then mix a bit of that with a small amount of water and use it along the raised parts, and the edges. This will give it a bit more deapth. Do this all over the edges of the red and the blue. Just this alone will make the model stand out much more and be much more noticable.

I would try this on some gaunts, to see how you might like the carapace design to be for you. And to get used to testing your highlighting skills. Then apply it to the big guy.

Also, try to not glob your paint. On the broodlord he looked like he has really thick paint on him. Thats not good. Water down your paints when they get globby.

First off, nice Flyrant there, looking particularly vicious and ready to reap biomass for the hive!
What you can do to make it look even better is to use a method called drybrushing. There's a link to it here (http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/971158-post1.html) but the jist of it is that you paint a model in a dark color and then using a very little of a lighter color you brush the model. Using this method you highlight raised areas and create a nice effect.

If you'd do that with both the red and blue color you'd instantly have improved the look of the model and drybrushing is a great technique to get good looking minis in a simple way.

Oh and another thing. Bases!
Basing is a great way to make a good model look even better. Using some sand and PVA glue and then just painting the sand in a color of your choice is enough and you can really appreciate the difference it makes. Or you can do something more crazy with it! Your tyrant just stomp a marine? Excellent, add it to the base. Did he just slice aparat a guardsman? Put a bit of him right there!

Anyways, you came to the right place to improve your painting skills and I hope we see more of your 'nids around :)

If you want to paint more guys in the scheme of your broodlord, may I suggest you take a look at this thread. Lots of good info and a step-by-step for exactly that paint scheme.

I agree with stormwind, get some more blending in there (however, stormwind is sort of bright color happy when it comes to tyranids :D )

You mean when he said mixing paints? Blending is entirely diffrent! It is what people who win the golden deameon do, i am not on that level also did you look at my carapace :D i liked it . But thank you for replying.

Its not that hard. Use a brush and some watered down paint and basically create gradients from the low most of places to the highmost of places, getting lighter in color as you go up.

Where on earth would i blend on a nid?

Ok. I'm going to ignore your rude response and answer sincerly.

You want to show highlights and the highest elevated areas by making them lighter correct? So you would use different shades of red to do so, lets say. Now to make it look like its not just splotches of color you need to make it blend like the 'eavy metal guys do. So, you paint the light color in the highest elevated areas, and then drag it out, creating a gradient back to the color of the non elevated areas.

Where on earth would i blend on a nid?

_Mr_NiD_ : Please try to be polite in your comments, that was a bit rude. Blending can be done upon most sections, be it the skin, weapons, armour etc. It just takes more time and a bit more effort. Just a friendly warning to be careful of how you reply.

Silly slacker idea: What if he just dumped them in a tub of ink? :p (It would give it a nice icky alien look, right?)

Sorry:( I'm not sure how tha was rude i didnt mean it like that, i was just fustrated with my painting. I can see blending on my wings but i just think all the other parts are WAY to small, i have a shaky hand when it comes to painting. Im just looking for a semi easy way to get the best out of my models. Agian im sorry, i ment no disrespect.

Thought I might pipe in here, forgive me if this has been suggested already.....but have you considered dipping (http://www.dysartes.com/model/painting/Dipping1.php)them? It's a bit of an unorthodox method,but....it certainly works. Plus, your models as they're painted now look just right for dipping. Give it a look, if nothing else.

Thats interesting, never seen anything like that, could the same job be done with ink? Im just a lil afraid to waht it will do to my model.....i won't be able to strip it if i do not like which would be a downfall, but it does look cool.

Im glad you pointed me over here. I like your scheme, and I think it would look that much better with inking it or dipping it to add depth.

As for your question on the ink, yeah, its pretty much the same thing, but dipping is for the whole model.

I love the look of your Flyrant, and I usually don't like the older models. The conversion is really cool.

Sorry to Necropost by the way!

One of the things you might try are washes. You could probably hit the entire broodlord with a brown wash and a Paynes Grey wash (I use liquitex, available from most craft stores) would help shade the flyrant.

Here's a set of progressive pics that show you what the brown wash does to an almond and mechrite red basecoat

Here's an article I wrote about Paynes Grey: http://www.kan.org/michael/mkp/paynes_grey.php
