View Full Version : How Long You Been Playing

CodeOveride
April 15th, 2004, 13:21
I was glancing over a couple of threads and came to the relization that what I thought was general knowledge about the GW worlds was not well known across the board. I mean I can across a post by someone who didn't know who the primarchs were. Now this sorta thing is unbelievable to anyone thta has played for a while. So I decide to ask:

How Long Have You Been Playing Games WorkshopGames?

Me personally, I started as a little Ultramarine Player when I was about 13, that was 10 years ago and have since changed to the great Space Wolves plus other armies from 40k, Warhammer, Blood Bowl, Epic, Man O War and so on.

Can anyone beat 10 years?

I started with Tyranids, then went on to collect Tau and Necrons... it's been 3 years. :D

April 15th, 2004, 14:02
I can equal the 10 years, first started playing back in mid 1994 and haven't really stopped since.

Of course, I could be cheeky and say that I could add another 5 years for Space Crusade, Blood Royale and Hero Quest, but probably not

Ah, fond memories of trying to work out how to use those clip together Marines without them breaking!

I am starting my 5th year of beening in the Warhammer hobby.I started with Nids, but since I was really, really new to the hobby after a month, I ropped them and went for the SMs (since they were a good army for beginners like me). Than I had at least 3 DIY chapters for them. I forgot the first, but the second was the Flame Bearers of the Imperium, than after them I decided to call them the Glacier Legion. Than after a year of the GL, Nurgle called me and know I am a big nurgle player.

Bought my first Furioso Dread in December, so I guess that means I've been playing BA for.... [counting fingers....] 4 months. Hopefully I'll be starting a Tyranid army this summer.

I started playing in the fall of 1999. I stopped playing for a couple of years because I was too involved with getting drunk and laid in college while getting an education in between. I started up again about a year ago.

mrsoviet
April 17th, 2004, 09:08
i think about 5 yrs... but i dont get to play a whole lot and games go for like 2-3 days cause my usual opponent will take like 30 min a turn at min... (ugh!)

Mikhail The Heretic
April 19th, 2004, 10:23
30 minutes a turn what is he doing having a coffee and a danish.

Crimson Reaver
April 19th, 2004, 11:49
30 minutes is fast for my group to take a turn, by the time we've changed the music, had munchies, beer and bickered about some obscure rule or three, we're looking at 5 hours for a game minimum, but as we play with 3000+ points a side all the time that's not too bad.

Mikhail The Heretic
April 19th, 2004, 12:02
Yeah i can understand how a 3000+ point game can take up to 5 hours my games usually range from 1000 to 1500 points and so don't usually last longer than an hour and a half. (although i did once hear about a 1500 points game that lasted 10 minutes five of which were setting up)

I've played dwarves for three years now, as an innocent 14 year old I was lured into addictiveness. "And once you start down that dark path, there is no escape, no turning back."
I started IG two years ago, and goblins this year.

April 19th, 2004, 18:25
Im slowly creeping up to 11 years. Got my first model in 93 (i was only eight) but started playing in 94.

I don't play half as much as i used to though and my knowledge of the latest edition is somewhat lacking compared to the prior edition of which i had learned practically everything.

April 19th, 2004, 19:20
I got my first models in '96, but haven't started to collect armies till this year. My armies are really small. But I love to paint models.

isitused
April 19th, 2004, 21:52
I started at 12 years young so that would figure into 11 years of this. Started back in the Rogue Traitor days with Marines. Then Second edition was my fall to chaos, When the Dark millennium rolled around I picked up the old Blood angels again. Fourth edition was the rise of the Eldar; Followed by the Terror of their Dark kin (Dark Eldar) and now a mighty Imperial Guard force is on the rise. And there are roomers of a Legion of the Dammed army lurking in the mist.

(Not to mention Bretonian,Orcs&Goblin, and Dwarf army for WHFB)

I've been playing 40k since 1992...It sure doesn't feel like 12 years...

I started with SM at first, along with some of the wierdo armies...I had a Jokero army, they were nuts...Switched to Orks early, then switched to IG when Commisar Yarrik first came out, and from second Ed on I have been playing different incarnations of Space Marines, With a brief but bloody (for my opponents) stay with Chaos somewhere in the middle there...

Currently I play Ravenguard and Ulthwe Strike Force... two very difficult armies to play...but rewarding come victory time.

8 years, started at seven, now ium fifteen, i looked in a magazine i won from some contest, now lost in history, and it had som models, i think it was a military model magaziune with a warhammer exclusive. i started with 3rd edition, mainly with old inherited second edit models and second edit rules, but then i got the 3rd edition rule book...

its funny to kno that some of the veterans of this site are such newbies to the game, makes me laugh, i wanna kno how long BiD has collected for./..

i play SM (doesnt every new player) and Ig, Tau, Kroot, Dwarves, Chaos, Necrons and other things i started and never got off the ground, like if i sawe them in a white dwarf and bought some, most of those i mentioned were such, but i have 2000pts of spaceys, and about 4000 of imperial guard, with the lovely old models, whcih still look good, out of all the old models, imperial guard were the best

Sigh...10 years of playing Blood Angels.

The weird thing is 3rd Edition still seems new to me. (Has it been 6 years? Wow...)

Draegath
June 7th, 2004, 16:39
Ive been playing for *counts on fingers*.... 13 years. During that time Ive gone thru heaps and heaps of armies, tho I tend to sell off the old ones or swap them with other gamers.
I agree with LRSeriesIII that this ed still seems new... *sigh* I guess it is in need of some polishing

Currently I have Southlands Skinks, Daemonhunters, Tomb Kings and Orcs.

Maybe it is just because they have kept the rules streamlined and there are not heaps upon heaps upon heaps of obscure rules to sift through every turn...(rare/unique wargear cards anyone?...)

Ah, good times... B)

I started playing back around '90 with Rogue Trader. It's hard to remember a time that long ago. :) However, I only dabbled with 2nd edition. [The virus bombs and vortex grenades ticked me off, and the pulsa rokkits did the same for my opponents.] I then started playing WHFB. In 97 I got back into 40K.

June 11th, 2004, 00:43
Started playing Epic in late '95. Long time vet of games like Advanced Squad Leader(III edition) and Panzer Leader(II edition), the 28mm scale *****ed me off at the time because of lack of detail considering the size.

June 11th, 2004, 03:00
I played for a while back when second edition was brand spanking new, but then after a couple of years I sold them all and stopped playing so that I could go play fantasy, which was a better game than 40k then.

Not long after 3rd edition of fantasy came out (While I was waiting for all the stupid army books to be released) I got back into 40k pretty hardcore. I painted up another Imperial Guard army and here I am.

I found my old copy of Dark Millenium the other day - I was trying to sell it on ebay but no takers - wasn't it amazing just how much migno we had to sift thru to play a game... I had flashbacks when I was looking at the contents of the box to back when you had to dedicate the edge of the table to holding all your wargear cards, psychic cards, mission cards, multiple different templates for 16 different but similar attacks etc etc
ahh the memories
anyone wanna buy that box?

Before that I was playing FB, and well I tend to collect more than play (stupid lack of players <_< ) and my armies (all four of them) are in between 500 and 10,000pts. does anyone know how long exactly it IS before you cease being a newbie, become a veteran, etc etc?

maybe we should make this up?
By my reckoning -
0-2 years = newbie
2-5 years = gamer
5-15 years = veteran
15+ years = living ancestor

Jozef
June 17th, 2004, 10:35
Thats nice, but "living ancestor" is copyrighted by GW :P .

A long long time ago, in a era only remembered by few, living ancestors were the HQ choice of a rare and sinister race called squats. Protected by the Heartguard these old space dwarves roamed battlefields on bikes and trikes.

And I really feel old when you would call me living ancestor :( .

Wow, you guys have been doing this for a while... I'm not so much a "newbie" as I am a "fetus", in experience terms

I first found out about warhammer a piddling months ago in late march. I bought my first army in mid april on ebay, (it was space marines) and promptly resold it in disgust (the paint-job sucked, and I was to scared to take a brush to anything). Then, about three weeks ago, I decided to try again. I actually made a profit from selling the space marines (I took better pictures than the last seller, and had a better rep on ebay), and was able to finance an entire 2000 point 'nid army, again on ebay. This army also sucked, but thanks to a friends digital camera, I was also able to resell it at a profit, and after much thought, bought another 'nid army. This time, I stripped the suckers, and had an all day painting festival over the weekend. Thanks to a free weekend, and the miracle of minwax varnish, I, a fan for all of 4 months, and an actual "player" (someone who knows the rules, pretty much) for all of about a week, have painted my own 89 model army in under two days! Pics as soon as I can wrangle a camera - I'm really looking foward to the forum's comments.

I also bought another space marine army, black dragons from a guy from canada. All in all, I've managed to actually MAKE a few hundred bucks (after deducting the profits from the first SM army and first nid army) and pick up a 2000 point 'nid army, and a 2000 point SM army in the process, a fact I'm rather proud of. I think I'm going to start with the marines, and experiment with the 'nids later, though the bug models are cooler.

3 years playing for me.

July 10th, 2004, 16:09
I started playing Lizardmen 7 years ago. After being beaten by Archaon in a local tournament I started playing chaos (with Arkie of course), doing that 'til I had about 5000 points. I then started a few small 40K projekts such as Dark Angels, Death Guard, Imperial Guard and Dark Eldar, but nothing really happened until I bought my Eldar (that I played for like 2 years). I then started playing fantasy again, this time with the Empire (my fantasy army today), but soon jumped to 40K again, along with the Armageddon campaign. My choice of army wasn't the popular Black Templars (that everyone seemed to collect), but the Salamanders. The Salamanders are the army I play today, and I'm thinking at taking them to the next GT. It's my Salamanders that shows in the gallery. So it's 7 years for me! :D
