View Full Version : Nechriah's "Fun and Exciting!" Cygnar Blog Nechriah March 25th, 2008, 05:39 Howdy y'all! Nechriah's the name, and Warmachine's the game...that I like to play every Wednesday with my gaming club. I've been playing it for a little under half a year now, and I'm fast approaching the point where I will have collected, assembled, and (almost) painted a complete army. This is the first time I've managed to do such a thing in all my years of wargaming! To celebrate this momentus occaision, I thought I'd start this blog so that I can watch my budding army grow over time. And this way, other people can watch it grow too, and maybe even derive some small measure of enjoyment out of doing so (?). We'll see.
I'm an avid fan of the Cygnarans, and there was very little doubt in my mind when I started playing this game that they would end up being my faction of choice. Here's my regular 350 point list that I actually own the models for:
- Captain Victoria Haley
- Ironclad Heavy Warjack
- Lancer Light Warjack
- Long Gunners: Sergeant and 7 Gunners
- Journeyman Warcaster
TOTAL: 346 points
I'm currently building up my collection so that I can field a 500 point army...or maybe even 750 points, sometime in the far distant furture when evil robot koalas rule the Earth. Anyway, these are my two planned lists:
- Captain Victoria Haley
- Ironclad Heavy Warjack
- Lancer Light Warjack
- Long Gunners: Sergeant and 7 Gunners
- Long Gunner Unit Attachment: Officer and Standard Bearer
- Sword Knights: Captain and 7 Knights
- Journeyman Warcaster
- Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist
- Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord
TOTAL: 499 points
- Commander-Adept Sebastian Nemo
- Centurion Heavy Warjack
- Lancer Light Warjack
- Long Gunners: Sergeant and 7 Gunners
- Sword Knights: Captain and 7 Knights
- Journeyman Warcaster
- Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist
- Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord
TOTAL: 497 points
I'm terribly excited at the moment because my latest order of stuff just came in at my local game store - which means that I'll finally own my favourite character in the game (Sebastian Nemo) in tiny, pewter form. I'm heading over there to pick him up once I've finished this post. Wazoo!
Oh, and I promise I'll put some pictures of my painted models up here soon. I've got to make this thing more interesting somehow...

*twidles thumbs while he waits for someone to read this* Blood_Blade March 26th, 2008, 19:12 Sounds good Nechriah, can't wait to see the pics.
It's always good to get more activity around the Warmachine side of things 8Y Da Mighty Camel March 28th, 2008, 22:16 Nice to see a new guy here. Welcome! awesome to hear that you are having a great time with WM! I can't wait to see some pics of your models. :) Nechriah April 1st, 2008, 06:55 Ack! I've looked over my models, and none of them are quite ready to have pics posted yet. They're all in an unfortunate state of "almost, but not quite" finished. I was intending to tidy up my 'jacks and casters during the weekend, but ended up helping my sister move house instead. While fun, that sort of thing doesn't really leave a lot of time for painting.
To compound my annoyance, my friendly local game store mixed up their orders so that all the new stock people had requested arrived...except for Nemo :? Oh well, hopefully he'll show up sometime soon. In the meantime, the Pirates book was one of the many new things that arrived, further testing my resolve to finish my Cygnar army BEFORE I start my Four Star Syndicate army. The solos in that book have really impressed me, especially Dirty Meg and Doc Killingsworth.
Anyway, my Thursday lectures were cancelled this week, so I might be able to finish painting something - around my homework of course *coughcough* - and put up the pictures later this week. Fingers crossed.
Thanks for the interest in my thread guys, hopefully I'll put something up soon that'll make it worth coming back to! tarzen April 4th, 2008, 15:49 - Captain Victoria Haley

fantastic! Welcome to the blogspot of PP in our little nitch of the interwebz.
Like the list, sums up cygnar pretty well-some smashy, some shooty, some spell slinging and a bunch of arcane shield.
- Captain Victoria Haley
- Ironclad Heavy Warjack
- Lancer Light Warjack
- Long Gunners: Sergeant and 7 Gunners
- Long Gunner Unit Attachment: Officer and Standard Bearer

I like it. Personally I would run trenchers instead of LGs, but that's me. Like it. The swords knights work well with haley since she relies on lancers. A suggestion in the grand scheme of things would be to swap the alchemist and piper and LG UA for a hunter for JR, as then you can use the hunter to engage stuff that needs it without tying up your lancer to your knights too much (by moving your hunter close, shooting something in the face, then popping reserve tank to engage. Hopefully your SKs will kill whatever they hit with "flanked", leaving your hunter ready to kill more next turn).
- Commander-Adept Sebastian Nemo
- Centurion Heavy Warjack
- Lancer Light Warjack
- Long Gunners: Sergeant and 7 Gunners
- Sword Knights: Captain and 7 Knights
- Journeyman Warcaster
- Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist
- Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord

I understand why you use the same models in each list. Very practicle, but you when time permits you may wish to expand to the koala empire with other units=) In this case, having lady ayanaa and holt or even the baddest mofo cygnar or any non cryx/menoth faction can take might be in order, the one, the lovely, the undead- Alexia.
Anyways, I've had great fun with nemo, and while I love the old man, he has a hard time getting it done as a solo caster. Teamed up in 1,000 pt games or in mangled metal, he shines, but 1 on 1 he will struggle against many casters and has a hard time in infantry spam.

Ah, just post the pics=) And thanks for sharing with us! Nechriah April 8th, 2008, 03:22 Hey Tarzen, thanks for the comments!
RE your suggestions about my list composition: You know, I've never thought of taking the Hunter...that might be something to look into. I'm generally loathe to run too 'jack heavy (I consider anything more than two jacks to a caster to be 'jack heavy, unless said caster is Darius) as I find that it stretches a warcaster's focus too thin. Likewise, I have horrible memories of the last time I let a Journeyman play with 'jacks, but I might try marshalling the Hunter, or perhaps the Lancer, with the Sword Knight Captain. You've definately given me something to think about.
As for Lady Aiyana and Master Holt, I am SERIOUSLY tempted to add them to my Nemo list, purely for the focus he'll gain from Aiyana's magic. Coupled with that provided by the Journeyman, he'll be sitting on a grand total of nine focus each turn, which is just far too good to pass up on. The models are very nice as well (especially Aiyana!), and after reading his profile Holt looks vicious. I particularly like his 'Virtuoso' rule.
Speaking of Nemo: everyone's always said that Nemo's a difficult caster to use on his lonesome, but I've personally never found that...in all the games I've played with him, I've only lost twice (hacked apart by Vlad in close combat the first time, and brutally gang shanked by Bane Knights the second). Admittedly, a lot of my success with Nemo stems purely from the fact that dice seem to roll my way when I'm using him. He's like my good luck charm or something, hence my enthusiasm for the old man.
So, new list ideas as per Tarzen's suggestions:
- Commander-Adept Sebastian Nemo
- Lancer Light Warjack
- Centurion Heavy Warjack
- Long Gunners: Sergeant and 8 Gunners
- Sword Knights: Captain and 7 Knights
- Journeyman Warcaster
- Lady Aiyana and Master Holt
TOTAL: 500 points
- Captain Victoria Haley
- Lancer Light Warjack
- Hunter Light Warjack
- Ironclad Heavy Warjack
- Long Gunners: Sergeant and 7 Gunners
- Sword Knights: Captain and 6 Knights
- Journeyman Warcaster
TOTAL: 499 points
I'll definately try out that Nemo list this week. Thanks a bunch! 8Y
Oh, and pictures of my Commander Stryker, Captain Haley, Ironclad, Lancer and Gorman di Wulfe models will definately be up on Thursday this week. tarzen April 9th, 2008, 19:40 I will say the hunter with JR makes for a very effective team since he can run 12" away from JR and still receive focus. Plus, the hunter only needs 2, letting JR upkeep AS on stuff, or if you're shooting medium based troops, you shouldn't have to boost much on the hunter, meaning JR can pop a double boosted pow 12. Just a thought.
And if you are gonna have a lancer in your list, never ever, never, never never marshal it. It either goes on your caster or sits on the sidelines. If you want to marshal a light, marshal a sentinel or grenadier. Both will do you well. The hunter won't make a very effective marshal point either, as his extended leash doesn't work with marshalling IIRC.
Holt is a great addition, almost replacing Able (gmca), while gaining a few tricks at the cost of others (flash shots are just cool). Alexia also provides nemo with the extra focus, and the 3 (jr, alexia, and lady aiyanna bring him to 10, but usually it's cost prohibitive under 750).
I like the nemo list-very solid.
With the haley list, give hunter over to JR and it should work well for you. Nechriah April 10th, 2008, 02:40 Yeah, the Hunter's reserve tank makes it an excellent choice for the Journeyman, since he's otherwise got a rather paltry control radius of 6. It's a little too points expensive for my tastes (88 points for a light warjack!), but if it gets the job done it's probably worth it. All of its special rules do make it rather focus efficient, I must say.
Now, as promised, some pictures of my models! Photos were taken by Brett, with his "Mad Camera Skills", since all the shots I took were very, very blurry. Anyway, without further ado: tarzen April 10th, 2008, 03:23 Yeah, the Hunter's reserve tank makes it an excellent choice for the Journeyman, since he's otherwise got a rather paltry control radius of 6. It's a little too points expensive for my tastes (88 points for a light warjack!), but if it gets the job done it's probably worth it. Umm, you may wish to reread the card for the hunter=) With JR, you have a 12" control area, with haley you have a 28" one as far as donating focus. Hint, it's not a reserve tank thing=) But the tank is great for oooh so many things. Stand and aim, shoot something in the forhead, then pop tank to get out of there. Walk up and shoot something from point blank, then pop tank to engage so your sword knights get flank bonus on the charge=)
Anyways, like the paint, nice job! Nechriah April 10th, 2008, 03:46 *HEADDESK* That's right, the reserve tank gives it extra movement or somesuch, and the extended control radius comes from...something else entirely. I've never used the Hunter myself, so I'm a little fuzzy on what it can do. It's a cool looking model, and I like it's armour-piercing long cannon thingy - maybe I'll have to look out for one next time I'm in my LGS?
And thanks, glad to know someone likes my painting! tarzen April 10th, 2008, 04:30 Yeah, the hunter is useful in my particular playstyle with my JR. Others have varying degrees of success with him. Just don't commit him too far up front, as full AD is a bad thing usually.
The long arm is the thing. With snipe it's obscene, same with deadeye. The main thing to remember though is that it is the definition of a glass cannon. Super super low arm and not enough boxes to take a hit. Keep it out of melee and he'll do you well, or plop him into it if you need to, but with his aiming bonus, and boosted AP shot, he can hit most anything and will kill most non casters, while wrecking many lights on a good roll.
For me, I'd stick with the haley list for a bit. Shes's the queen of mean. Great range, fantastic spell list, and is all about the denial.
TB stops charges, and wrecks banes. Plus it's a great boost to your melee and ranged attacks. Oddly enough, I use it offensively more than 90% of my castings, rather than turtle with it, but that could just be my playstyle.
Chainlightning is just so wonderful. Can't see something you want dead? hiding with stealth? High def? Auto hit it by shooting your own low def models in the backa nd watching it bounce to where you need it. Classic example would be my disrupted lancer looking at eyriss (who had disrupted me the turn before) and keil bollock hiding in some woods. I couldn't hit them with melee, nor could I reach them with straight spells so I advanced my lancer to just outside 2 inches away and chain lightninged him in the back. 4's to hit, 2 bounces later and 2 dead solos=) Oh, and I didn't scratch the paint on my lancer.
I'VE STARTED TO REALLY LOVE SCRAMBLE, BUT i MUST ADMIT i OFTEN OVERLOOK ITS USEFULNESS IN MY ATTEMPTS TO PLAY HARD AND FAST. Gah, caps, sorry, too lazy to retype.
Deadeye makes haley a wonderul addition to trenchers, long gunners, gun mages, hunters, sentinals, chargers, heck, anything with a gun, including stormblades if the need arises.
And her feat allows for a first turn win with trenchers. 2 pow 24's turn one from trenchers with a total threat range of 40" in from your board edge.
Anyways, add that to the fact that she has good def, set defense, and can counter spells cast near her, as well as TB means she plays incredibly defensive too. Nechriah April 10th, 2008, 04:52 Oh yeah, Haley is quite simply fantastic. Stryker was the caster I learnt to play with, and still remains one of my favourite characters in the story, but Haley can do so many wonderful things that he can't. Like Temporal Barrier - one of the best uses I've found for it is to cast it, pop her feat, then team up with a Journeyman to shoot something - usually the enemy warcaster - with FOUR hand cannon shots.
Scramble's a tricky spell to find a use for, but if the right situation arises it can be great fun. I particularly like the fact that Karchev is vulnerable to it - one of my friends who plays Khador likes using the man in the machine with two Kodiaks...Scramble (and Nemo's Voltaic Snare, come to think of it) play havoc with that sort of army.
Chain Lightning is always good - my standard tactic for dealing with annoying enemy infantry is to get a Centurion or Ironclad (works best with a Centy though) right into their midst, then blast it in the back with chain lightning. As you said, Centurions and other warjacks can survive being hit with lightning, most infantry can't...except for those damned Man-O-Wars and Trollkin Champions *shakes fist*. Still, that's what Long Gunners are for I guess.
Put simply, Haley is one of the most solid, versatile, and easy to use warcasters Cygnar has - and she's in the very first book (proof that newer isn't always better). We could probably go on for days about how wonderful she is! Da Mighty Camel April 10th, 2008, 11:04 Scramble does not work on Karchev. Karchev is not a Warjack. ;)
I, one the other hand, dislikes Haley. A lot. Guess that's because I am the recieving end... :) Nechriah April 28th, 2008, 02:24 Whee, update time! I don't have any new pictures to show people today, but I'm getting there. Instead, you get something like a battle report in the form of my vague recollections about my latest beatdown(s). Also, I did buy some new models during the mid-semester break, and I've almost got my 500 point Nemo list finished. Oddly enough, the one thing I'm missing is still Nemo. My FLGS says that orders will take anywhere between 2-6 weeks to come in, yet I ordered the old man EIGHT weeks ago and he's still not here. Oh well, he's old. He probably got on the wrong boat by mistake...
Anyway, the latest shiny additions to my army are:
- Hunter Light Warjack
- Long Gunner UA
- Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
I put the Hunter and Aiyana & Holt to work last week, and was quite impressed - largely because they were the ONLY THINGS IN MY ARMY THAT ACTUALLY DID ANYTHING. I suffered not only one, but TWO crushing defeats by the Khadorans.
The first one was against Yoshi, the resident Khador player in our gaming club. I took:
- Commander-Adept Sebastian Nemo (using Coleman Stryker as a proxy)
- Lancer Light Warjack
- Ironclad Heavy Warjack
- Long Gunners: Sergeant and 7 Gunners
- Journeyman Warcaster
- Hunter Light Warjack
- Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
Total: 494 points
Against:
- Kommander Sorscha Kratikoff
- Destroyer Heavy Warjack
- Greylord Ternion: Koldun and 2 Magzievi
- Greylord Ternion: Koldun and 2 Magzievi
- Winter Guard: Sergeant and 9 Guardsmen
- Winter Guard Rocketeer
- Winter Guard Mortar Crew
- Winter Guard Mortar Crew
- Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich
- Manhunter
Total: 488 points
Suffice to say that what happened next wasn't pretty. There was a lot of ice magic being cast by the Khadorans, as well as some nasty cloud effects and other things which meant that my Long Gunners - usually the trusty workhorse of my army - were reduced to sitting around twiddling their thumbs while mortar shells and Destroyer cannonfire rained down on them. Nemo tried his darndest to take out the big unit of Winter Guard by arcing a Chain Lightning spell through the Lancer, onto the advancing Ironclad. All that did was hurt the Ironclad due to a SPECTACULAR damage roll on my part (double sixes! Against my own model!). The Winter Guard were not fried by the arcing lightning on account of Kovnik Joe making them tough, and Yoshi making all of his tough rolls. Aiyana and Holt managed to pick off a few Winter Guard, and even hurt Kovnik Joe a little, before being frozen by Sorscha's feat and having an unneringly accurate mortar shell dropped on them. The Hunter and Journeyman team were the only models who came close to earning their points back, taking out the Manhunter, a Mortar Crew and making a big dent in the Destroyer. In the end it wasn't enough and soon all of army lay in ruins, apart from Nemo. Probably something to do with the insane amounts of focus he was accumulating from the Journeyman, Aiyana & Holt, and all the Greylords. However, the old man found himself in close combat with Sorscha and...well, that sort of thing doesn't work out well for Nemo.
Second game was against Louise, who normally plays Proctectorate of Menoth, or Legion of Everblight if the mood takes him. However, he decided he'd like to try his hand at Khador, and perhaps give me a chance for a win since this was the first time he'd used the reds. I took the same list as last time against:
- Vladimir Tzepesci, the Dark Prince
- Destroyer Heavy Warjack
- Greylord Ternion: Koldun and 2 Magzievi
- Man-O-War Shocktroopers: Kapitan and 4 Shocktroopers
- Man-O-War Demo Corps: Kapitan and 2 Demolishers
- Man-O-War Drakhun (with dismount option)
- Manhunter
Total: 498 points
Alright, so I could look forward to more ice magic cloud effects, more hard to kill infantry, and all of Vlad's lovely sorceries like Boundless Charge, Signs and Portents, and Blood of Kings (like Nemo didn't have enough trouble hitting Sorscha with all her defence buffs! Yikes!). Louise didn't disappoint, he started sending his cloud-concealed troops steamrolling thorugh my army with great aplomb. The Journeyman and Hunter netted themselves another Manhunter, this time in melee; and the Ironclad managed to kill a few Man-O-War Shocktroopers before being torn apart by their Demo Corp brethren. Aiyana and Holt helped against the Man-O-Wars too - with Harm, even power 12 hand cannons will do something to those tin men - but the Drukhn got the better of them in the end. Nemo's Chain Lightning continued to be disastrous, missing the Man-O-Wars in combat with my Long Gunners and arcing through SIX proud Cygnarans. Ouch. Once again the battle came down to Nemo facing the enemy caster in combat - only this time it was Vladimir Tzepesci, backed up by a Man-O-War Drakhun! Louise decided to rub things in by killing Nemo with the Drakhun, rather than Vladimir, but Nemo did get a posthumous chuckle this time when his Electrify upkeep knocked the Drakhun off his horse. Score!
So, I've learnt that Electrify is a great upkeep spell when I actually remember I've cast it on something; and that Khadoran 'casters, working in concert with Greylords, can dish out some awesome defence buffs. I have come away from my most recent crushing defeats with an even healthier respect for the reds. Next time, Khador. Next time :ninja: tarzen April 28th, 2008, 03:04 Well, glad you got to put a few dents in before getting bonked.
- Commander-Adept Sebastian Nemo (using Coleman Stryker as a proxy)
- Lancer Light Warjack
- Ironclad Heavy Warjack
- Long Gunners: Sergeant and 7 Gunners
- Journeyman Warcaster
- Hunter Light Warjack
- Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
looks like a fun list. Using holt and aiyana to harm a jack, shoot it a bunch, then pop nemos feat and boost is just a mean way to hurt a jack=)
Not sure why, but I had a similar problem killing kovnick jo last night myself.
Sorcha vs anything without trenchers is gonna hurt, just no way to get around that=(
Curious to how you fried your own guys with your chainlightning, were you targeting into melee and randomized into a chain of your guys? and even double 6's still only does 3 damage to the IC IIRC, not bad.
Also, remember that nemo has a decent shooting attack vs stuff where he doesn't have to move, can be helpful.
And best of all, electrify is great=) Used defensively or offensively it is fun. Had a game come down to nemo and mortenebra. almost got the kill off a electrified backstrike. I kept moving while camping focus, forcing him to either let me get into his back arc so I could move away and shoot him, or take the electify pow 14 and risk me killing with all the other attacks.
Anyways, hope the blues are working out alright for ya, and that you are enjoying them. Nechriah April 29th, 2008, 03:14 Oh, it's a fun list alright. The best part is the amount of focus Nemo will be sitting on - eight or nine reliably each turn, and that's just from his own people. Factor in enemy spellcasters, and he can quite feasibly end up on ten focus a turn. Mind you, I'm not so keen on my opponent bringing spellcasters, especially those Greylords. Nasty gentlemen they are...in hindsight, I should have used Aiyana's "mini-mage blight" spell a bit more - I can't remember what it's called (Glyph of Nyssor or somesuch), but it basically denies feat-popping and spell-casting within 10" of her.
As for that shocking (literally! aha, pun!) chain lightning attack against my own troops, that was just an example of how bad my dice rolls can be sometimes. It's something of a running joke in our gaming club that all dice hate me. D6s, D10s, D20s, you name it - whatever the game, and whatever polygonal shape is rolling, it generally won't roll well for me. I once went for a whole two weeks without rolling anything higher than a two. Honest.
Overall though, I'm enjoying my Cygnarans. I have a lot of fun with Nemo, even though he's often maligned as being a bad caster by himself in smaller games. I'm determined to score a few more wins with the old man and prove the naysayers wrong! That said, I'm thinking I might try some HORDES this week, just for a change. I've had a few games with Circle Orboros and Skorne before, and I'm leaning heavily towards Circle, what with their blackclad druid types and guardian monsters. Painting some green would be a pleasant change from deep blue as well...but I shall not betray King Leto so quickly! You will need more than awesome stone constructs and beastmen to temp me, Circle!
Y'know, sometimes people suggest I get to involved with my hobbies. I'm starting to think there's a kernel of truth in that...I think I'll go and ponder this some more.
:P Nechriah May 15th, 2008, 03:15 Well, given that Librarium Online has been down for a bit, and the fact that Father Nurgle saw fit to give me maxillary sinusitus this week, I've sort of been neglecting this little corner of the interwebz. I've also been neglecting my Cygnarans at recent games days - I've been trying out the Circle Orboros. I don't know if it's entirely appropriate to talk about HORDES in here, but what the hey - this is my "fun and exciting Cygnar blog", and I can do what I like with it. Well, within reason. I probably shouldn't, I don't know, launch into a lengthy discourse on the evolution of fruitbats. I'm not going to do that.
So, I had a think, and decided that I would use Kaya the Wildborne, a Warpwolf, a Gorax, some Druids of Orboros and the very awesome Lord of the Feast. I've run this list for the last couple of weeks and I am really liking it. I've also managed to rack up three victories, two of them against my most hated foe Legion of Everblight (who are tied with the Proctectorate for most hated foe). The Lord of the Feast is so much fun - the first time I used him he killed a Teraph. By himself. My only problem with him is that he moves to damn slowly - although Advance Deployment does negate this somewhat. Oh, and I've discovered the joys of two-handed throwing with a Warpwolf. I'm going to start keeping a record:
THINGS THROWN BY NECHRIAH'S WARPWOLF
1. Titan Gladiator
2. Earthborn Dire Troll
3. Fenris
4. 2 Doomreavers
In short, I like Circle a lot and once I've finished painting all my Cygnar miniatures I may look into getting the battlebox.
Now, back to WARMACHINE: the latest issue of No Quarter seems to have everyone very excited, and for good reason. Even though Katherine Laddermore is a splendid new additon to Cygnar's forces fluffwise, modelwise, ruleswise and finally-we-have-more-spunky-women-in-our-army-it's-about-blurdy-time-wise; I was way more excited about the new Mercenary stuff. So now I'm finding myself wanting to realise my goal of starting a Merc army too. I've been wanting to do this since I started playing Warmachine, but the sheer arry of options, the prevailing opinion that Mercenaries aren't competitive, andthe amount of things I'd have to buy put me off.
I've been trying to decide between Four-Star Syndicate and Highborn Covenant, and I think I've finally settled on the latter - which I guess makes sense as I actually have the Ashlynn d'Elyse model. Here's the list I have in mind:
HIGHBORN COVENANT
- Ashlynn d'Elyse
- Ogrun Bokur (client: Ashlynn d'Elyse)
- Mariner Heavy Warjack
- Forge Guard: Captain and 7 Hammerers
- Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
- Dirty Meg OR Anastasia di Bray
Total: 350 points
No idea how this plays yet, I was planning on trying it out with some proxies this week, but I was still sick yesterday. I'm still sick now, come to mention it. So if this update reads like the rantings of a madman in the midst of some fever dream, it's because it more or less is. I think I should have stayed home in bed playing Fire Emblem like I did the last three days.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Don't play Fire Emblem. It has the most disappointing and lacklustre ending I can remember a videogame ever having. So speaks Father Nurgle through his newest vessel!
Well, that's the latest from me. Peace out, internet.

Ashlynn's feat, from what I understand, can be devastating when combined with a number of other casters. My favourite combo that I've heard of is Ash and Fiona the Black feating on the same turn, which I think works something like this:
- All friendly models roll two extra attack dice and discard the lowest, all enemy models roll two extra dice and discard two chosen by Ashlynn's controller
- All enemy models roll one less dice on attack and damage rolls
:party2:
I imagine that would be QUITE annoying to deal with. I can't wait for our group to start playing 1,000 point games now. That won't happen for a while though - we've only just moved up to 500 points as it is Da Mighty Camel May 15th, 2008, 11:04 IMPORTANT NOTE: Don't play Fire Emblem. What? You played FE (assuming it is Radiant Dawn) for the story? I gave up the story after an hour since I realised it was teh crap then. :P I play it for the battles! Nechriah May 20th, 2008, 03:56 What? You played FE (assuming it is Radiant Dawn) for the story? I gave up the story after an hour since I realised it was teh crap then. :P I play it for the battles!
It was the one on the Game Boy Advance - as far as I know it's just called Fire Emblem, no snappy subtitle or anything like that.
I will admit that the story was pretty lame - I only really enjoyed it when I was reading the cutscenes aloud in horribly overacted, caricatured voices, but even that din't prepare me for just how BAD the ending was. I think I was also annoyed with it because I lost all of my favourite units in the final battle - namely Raven (the swordsman) and Canas (the dark wizard) Nechriah May 23rd, 2008, 06:33 Alright! I'm almost completely over my icky disease of doom, and so I was able to go along to my gaming club's weekly thing yesterday. I managed to get in three games, two with my new Highborn Covenant list (using proxies), and one with my good ol' Cygnarans - also using mostly proxies, since I decided to try out a whole bunch of stuff I'd never used before.
First game with my Highborn Covenant was against Louise and his Menites: Feora, Idrian Skirmishers, a Wrack and plenty of Exemplar Vengers with their new best buddy Gravus. This was a very close game, and could have gone either way for a while. The Idrians and Hammerers fought each other to the death, with Aiyana and Holt mopping up the pieces; while Dirty Meg, my Mariner, Ashlynn and her Bokur bore the brunt of the Exemplar's charge. The Bokur really shone, killing a Venger and Gravus, while the Mariner's performance was...lacklustre. In the end it came down to a one-on-one duel between Ashlynn and Feora in the river, after most of my stuff was set on fire and put out of action. Ashlynn didn't quite manage to kill Feora - knocking her down to one health - and Feora finished her off the next turn :(
Second game was against Ron's Cryx: Asphyxious, his pet Skarlock, a Deathripper, the Withershadow Combine, some Soul Hunters and their new best friend Darragh Wrathe. Everyone in our group is using their new character dragoons except me it seems. This game was a disaster for me from the beginning, with Asphyxious destroying the entire unit of Forge Guard in the first turn. Things were not going well until I managed to cast 'Kiss of Lyliss' on the Iron Lich. Two attacks from Holt pinned him down, allowing a Quickened Ashlynn to swoop in and deliver the coup-de-grace with a sneaky lunge attack. So, I've had my first win with the Highborn Covenant now!
Ron's been itching to have a game against my Cygnarans, and I decided to oblige him. For something different, I took Caine, a Hunter, 7 Stormguard, a Gunmage Captain-Adept and, since character dragoons are popping up everywhere, Major Katherine Laddermore. I was keen to try out Captain Arlan Strangewayes as well, but we couldn't find the No Quarter mag with his rules in so I settled for the Gunmage instead. Ron also decided to mix things up, swapping out his cavalry and Skarlock Thrall for the Revenant Crew and a BIG unit of Drudges. My first impression of Katherine Laddermore was a good one as she cut into the flank of the Drudge unit and fried four of them with her funky lightning lance. As this was my first time using Caine, I decided to Flash him behind a wall, and then declared his 'Maelstrom' feet the next turn, just to see what he can do. Turns out he can do a lot, but I suspect most Cygnar players already knew that. Caine netted himself the entire Pirate unit and all the remaining Drudges, as well as severely damaging the Withershadow Combine and the Deathripper. Unfortunately, the Iron Lich was outside of his control area by a hair's breath. During his next turn, Ron decided to take a gamble and charge his damaged Deathripper at Caine. Amazingly, it hit him and inflicted a whopping twelve damage to my warcaster. I was thinking Caine could still survive when that evil Cephalyx slaver drifted over and proceeded to slice Caine up with his knives.
So, at the moment I'm thinking I'll continue to build up my Highborn Covenant army. Ashylnn is a fun caster to use, and she's far more deadly than what I'm used to working with. Keeping her out of harm's way until she can unleash herself in melee is tricky (she's VERY fragile), but with practice that should come easy. Aiyana and Holt continue to earn their points back with great aplomb, though I should use Aiyana's 'Glyph of Nyrro' spell more often - it could have saved her and Holt from Feora in that game against Louise. The Ogrun Bokur is an awesome solo, tough, hard-hitting and reliable; and while they didn't get to do much I was impressed by the Forge Guard. The only weak link in my army is Meg, she didn't seem to do much so I think I'll swap her out for Rhupert Carvolo - he ought to make the Forge Guard more survivable.
When I turn my attention back to my Cygnar, I think I will be using Caine a lot more. He's one of the coolest charcters in the WARMACHINE story, and who can resist a guy with two magickal pistols? With the abundance of infantry-heavy armies where I play, Caine is probably going to be worth his weight in white metal alloy. Laddermore is also a bunch of fun to use, and I'm dead keen to try out Strangewayes as well.
It seems my only problem with the hobby now is the usual "Too much awesome stuff, not enough time and money to buy and paint it all" - but I guess that's a good problem to have.
'Til next time,
Nechriah Da Mighty Camel May 23rd, 2008, 15:13 Ooh, 3 nice little summaries there. Good to here that the Covenant is working out for you, Ashlynn is such a cool 'caster.
Keep us posted!
edit: @ Fire Emblem. I own the Wii-version. Very fun game with some great tactical battles. I recomend it. Nechriah May 27th, 2008, 07:01 Hmm, I've yet to pick up any of the "next gen" gaming consoles - I think it's because I already have one expensive and time-consuming hobby. That, and I'm torn between the 360 and the Wii. Still, if I do decide on the latter I will certainly pick up fire Emblem for it - I do love me some tactical battle games (Obviously! Why else would I be playing Warmachine/Warhammer etc. if I didn't?)
Yeah, the Highborn Covenant are working out well for me indeed Camel. I love stories about resistance fighters, so as soon as I read about Ashlynn I knew I'd want to play some a games with them at some stage. She's one of the best characters in the WM story in my opinion. I've challenged Yoshi (our resident Khador player) to a "grudge match" game between her and Epic Irusk - 'You killed my father. Prepare to die!' - and everyone at our gaming club is anticipating this event with great excitement, as it'll be our first 750 point game. This should be interesting...
I think Yoshi's trying to delay this match by way of encouraging me to return to my Cygnar army - he gave me Captain Arlan Strangewayes, the Arcane Mechanik, as an early birthday present yesterday, and it's not my birthday for another month or more! I'm not complaing though, Strangewayes is a wicked solo. I'm hoping to finish painting Aiyana and Holt sometime soon, so that I can get onto painting him up as well. Pictures will be coming soon, I hope!
*Nechriah out* Nechriah June 10th, 2008, 06:40 It looks as though my Cygnar blog, and indeed most of my wargame related activities will be going on hiatus until the end of the month. Exam revision week begins either this week or next week (depending on which university you attend 'round these parts), and since most of my gaming club are uni students - myself included - we'll all be up to our eyeballs in work for the next few weeks. Hence, the club is dormant for a while. I just thought I'd let my avid readers (all five of you! :P) know where I disappeared to in adavance.
Oh, and for a little bit of good news: my Commander-Adept Sebastian Nemo model FINALLY came in. That only took fifteen weeks, as opposed to the "two-to-six weeks" that my friendly local games store advertises. Still, I'm not complaining (okay maybe I am, just a little tiny bit) - I've got my model and I can't wait to paint him. Now, it's just a matter of finding the time to do so...
Peace out, and see you all next month!
~ Nechriah Da Mighty Camel June 11th, 2008, 23:11 I think you should have recieved a discount on him, considering the outrageous wait... ;)
And good luck with the exams! Nechriah August 19th, 2008, 05:25 I return! After a month long hiatus from Warmachine and Hordes, our gaming club have resumed our usual weekly shenanigans. I haven't been reporting on them though, because...well, because I keep losing. Actually, it's mainly been because I just haven't been able to find the time. Though I have lost every single game - the results for the last four weeks look something like this:
Nechriah (Cygnar) versus Yoshi (Khador)
Encounter Level: Rumble/500 points
Winner: Yoshi
Nechriah (Cygnar) versus Yoshi (Khador)
Encounter Level: Duel/350 points
Winner: Yoshi
Nechriah (Cygnar) versus Ron (Cryx)
Encounter Level: Duel/350 points
Winner: Ron
Nechriah (Circle Orboros) versus Louise (Legion of Everblight)
Encounter Level: Duel/350 points
Winner: Louise
Nechriah (Circle Orboros) verses Ron (Skorne)
Encounter Level: Rumble/500 points
Winner: Ron
Nechriah (Highborn Covenant) versus Yoshi (Khador)
Encounter Level: Rumble/500 points
Winner: Yoshi
I'm starting to wonder where I'm going wrong. Not so much with Circle Orboros and the Covenant - I've barely grasped the basics of using them in 350 point games, so trying 500 points was a little presumptuous of me. Yoshi is just really, really big on encouraging people to play 500 point games. Cygnar, though...I'm GOOD with Cygnar. At least, I win with them sometimes - more often than I do with my other factions of choice. I don't think there's any one particular thing that's letting me down; just a combination of being a bit rusty after not having played for a month, bad dice rolls (always the bad dice rolls), and not knowing how to get the most out of some of my army choices. Major Katherine Laddermore, for example - I've used her in every game with Cygnar, and while she seems good I just haven't been unleashing the lightning powered storm of death that people are afearing.
As legend has it that I'm the happy, friendly, optimistic one in our gaming group, so I'm not too bothered by my losing streak. I'd just like to win a little less occasionally. Anyway, I'm going to return my focus to Cygnar, especially with all the cool new stuff they're getting from Legends, and try to finish collecting, painting and building my army before I do anything about Circle or Mercs. I'm also thinking I might try out a different warcaster, just for a change. I've used all of them bar Siege and Darius, and I'm liking the look of Siege. A lot. The core of my list is my Ironclad, some Stormguard, the obligatory Journeyman and his pet Hunter, with Strangewayes along to keep my 'jacks running longer than they have any right to. The remaining spots in my list can be filled by Major Laddermore, Stormsmiths, Aiyana and Holt, Rhupert Carvolo and Reinholdt...as well as the Black 13 Gunmage Strike Team and Professor Pendrake, once they're released. Nemo and Siege are around the same points cost, and I can see either of them working well with whatever list I come up with...so, I can swap them around as I see fit.
So, here's a list of all the stuff that I'll need, and how close I am to owning it:
Major Markus "Siege" Brisbane...need to order him in from my FLGS
Commander-Adept Sebastian Nemo...I own the model, but as yet he's unassembled and unpainted
Ironclad...I have one of these, and he's painted! Next!
Stormguard...I'll need to order these in from my FLGS. A box and one blister should be enough for now
Black 13th...these guys (and gal) aren't released until November. So...
Stormsmiths...there's a blister of them in my FLGS. Taunting me, me and my lack of money
Journeyman...I've got one, and bar a paintjob that needs a little tidying up, he's more or less done
Hunter...currently sitting on my desk, partially assembled
Arlan Strangewayes...ARRGH! So many bits! Where do they all go? How do you paint him? He's on my desk, and he's DRIVING ME NUTS
Laddermore...I don't have her, but she's on the shelf at my FLGS. She's expensive, and probably even harder to put together than Strangewayes. I'll leave her 'til later
Pendrake...released next month, and given how my FLGS likes to keep up with the new releases, he should be on the shelf soon
Aiyana & Holt...I own these two, and they're actually assembled and half-way towards being fully painted
Reinholdt...I'll need to order him, but he'll be worth it just for the carnage his 'reload' benefit will wreak when combined with Siege's rocket cannon
Rhupert...I ordered him about three months ago...and he's still not here. It's like Nemo all over again, so I guess he'll turn up. You know, eventually
Well, that's my wishlist. Over the next few months I'll be using my mad time-management skills to devote some time each week to building up the force outline above; and by blog here will allow you all to bear witness to this remarkable occurrence - Nechriah, with a fully-painted army! No proxies! Faith and Begora! Plus, there'll be more of the usual rubbish like my battle reports. All in all, my blog might be looking more structured and be updated more regularly. For now though, you just get all this twaddle...I know, and I'm sorry
