View Full Version : When it comes to the sound of battle

I have been constantly thinking about the music in 40k universe when it comes to specific races, the kind of music that would perhaps represent the race. So far I matched only a few races with their "respective" lyric. The races left blank have still not been though off so any ideas are apreciated.

So far I came up with the following soundtracks/theme which in my opinion best correlate with the specified race:

*Dark eldar*
YouTube - Imperial Battle Music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahFMOhHGowE) (General combat theme)
YouTube - Turanic Raiders Battle Music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzo4ONrI8n8&feature=related) (General combat theme, my personal favorite)

*Eldar*
YouTube - Homeworld 2 Soundtrack Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-DhrBk87-8) (Probably the best eldar theme ever made, a definite must)

*Imperial Guard*
YouTube - Freedom Fighters Music - Invasion of the Empire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQY-Zla9pbQ&feature=related)(Vostroyan probably)
YouTube - freedom fighters theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFAAbIDoe2Q&feature=related)(Vostroyan Probably)

*Space Marines*
YouTube - The Rock -Movie- (1996) Original Soundtrack - Movietheme #2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXmu-aLu3Mw&feature=related) (General combat theme)
YouTube - The Rock -Movie- (1996) Original Soundtrack - Movietheme #1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPrHH3DOaSE&feature=related) (General combat theme)
YouTube - RHAPSODY- Holy Thunderforce (http://youtube.com/watch?v=TxdoLFXgb6U) (Space Wolves theme)

*Chaos*
YouTube - disturbed - down with the sickness (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Zzak8Gq3KO0) (General combat theme)
YouTube - Resident Evil: Down with the sickness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aARsAJtT0tA) (Nurgle theme)

*Tau…

Orks...
YouTube - One Winged Angel - March of the Villains (Remake) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ou8hnCW-Ww0)

*Inquisition*
YouTube - Kingdom of Heaven Burning the past (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLLl6tmAedM) (Good general theme)

*Daemonhunters*
YouTube - Nightwish - Amaranth (http://youtube.com/watch?v=GdZn7k5rZLQ) (Genral combat theme)
YouTube - RHAPSODY- Holy Thunderforce (http://youtube.com/watch?v=TxdoLFXgb6U) (General theme)

*Kroot*
YouTube - Halo - Covenant Dance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fPFtDdqnJI&feature=related)

*Necron…
YouTube - Eximius Vespertilio Requiem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=084r1gP8oz0)

Please feel free to contribute ideas so I could add to the list, perhaps we could come up with a good list of songs for every race...
P.S Please be specific, the race theme has to be general and provide a good description for both the combat and life aspects of the race, so halo soundtrack obviously only applies to combat. If its a combat only theme, or a general only theme than please specify it.

Undecided:

WraithGuardian, I really don't know what to say after playing all those sound tracks - I know that GW stores here in Sydney Australia have some sort of common music but I have never even contemplated what is was much less asking about.

The music here seems to be heavy metal but I am no expert on these matters.

Must admit though it does set the mood for high energy, gut busting, soul stripping stomping of your opponents!

Ok, you got me thinking here and I just might have a look around for some suitable music.
(Love the Vostroyan themes though!)

Cheers.

We put on a mix of the following when we play:
Lordi
Ramstien
Spineshank
Sabaton
Beethoven
AC/DC

I'll have to check out your suggested Dark Eldar themes and work them into the mix. Wonder what would suit Orks?

I think Halo covenant dance is a good theme for Kroot perhaps. They kinda sound like a race with unusual, barbaric kind of theme.

To Medic, could you please be a little more specific with the link, or even just the song titles so I can find them.

So first post, a homeworld fan.

Then a nightwish fan/rise against fan.

You can't just have your favourite group for the majority of theme tunes lol :P

I looked for this one and couldnt find it, cna you post a link? Is the song in english?

And to Konstantine, I really didnt know there is a warhammer movie, its wasnt filmed in USA was it? Regarding the theme, I wanted to stay away from the main halo soundtrack because it can technicaly represent any race, halo theme especialy. However more spcific songs, like "gun pointed at the head of universe", "enough dead heroes" and "Ambient wonders" are a lot more specific in terms of what they could represent.

So first post, a homeworld fan.

Then a nightwish fan/rise against fan.

I know, Homeworld I had a different group than that of Homeword II so they both are fairgame. HW I was focused on dealing with the raider pirates problem so it has a lot of chilling lyrics to it so I though of dark eldar, while HW II was the more sensitive "survival" theme which in my opinion belongs with the eldar.

For those who want to venture beyond the knee-jerk heavy metal choices, I offer the following. I don't have audio clips for these, but if you're that interested, you can look them up.

Orks -- "March of the Villains" (John Williams, "Superman" soundtrack)
Orks -- "Mangalores" (Eric Serra, "The Fifth Element" soundtrack)

Necrons -- "The Terminator Theme" ("The Terminator" soundtrack)
Necrons -- "Mondoshawan" (Eric Serra, "The Fifth Element" soundtrack)
Necrons -- "Vespertilio" (Hanz Zimmer, James Newton Howard, "Batman Begins" soundtrack)

Eldar -- "Akta," followed by "Leeloo" (Eric Serra, "The Fifth Element" soundtrack. It's long, but worth it. Good for a game.)

Vostroyans -- "Main Title" (Basil Poledouris, "The Hunt for Red October" soundtrack)
Vostroyans -- "Nuclear Scam" (Basil Poledouris, "The Hunt for Red October" soundtrack, good for game music)

Tallarn -- "Main Title" ("Lawrence of Arabia" soundtrack)

Space Marines -- "The Battle" ("Gladiator" soundtrack, tracks 1-3 on this disc are a nice way to start a game)

Chaos(any flavor, really) -- "Hispanola" (Vangelis, "1492: Conquest of Paradise" soundtrack, would ironically work for Inquisition too, I think)

I always imagined most songs from E Nomine would work great for anything that has to do with the Imperium.

And the Homeworld songs I'm a little iffy on for Dark Eldar. They both seem more appropriate for the Chaos army with the predominantly egyptian theme (the name seems to elude me right now, but I hope you guys know what I'm talking about). DE needs something either darker, or more spastic.

I'll take a peek around and see if I can find anything more suitable, as well as something for Tau.

Slayer - Warzone - generic battle theme
Slayer - Raining Blood - any Khorne themed army - 'raining blood from a lacerated sky, screaming its horror, creating my structure now I shall reign in blood!'
Any Wagner or Bach for a generic Imperial theme - Ride of the Valkyries or Toccata and Fugue in D Minor
Metallica - ...And Justice For All - Inquisition - 'inquisition seeking you with prying minds'
Metallica - Of Wolf and Man - Space Wolves
Slayer - War Ensemble - generic battle theme
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss - when the movie of Battle for the Abyss comes out...

Almost any Slayer will do...they even released a boxed set called Soundtrack for the Apocalypse...
