View Full Version : My Bits Dilemma Your Opinion? Inquisitor Proiteus March 28th, 2008, 23:26 As all of you will know by now Games Workshop have stop selling both individual components as well as its classics range. Although they plan to bring back the models on demand I have my doubts that I’ll be able to count on GW to bring back the bits needed to complete my Necron army which I began building at the very beginning of this year.
Here are the four different types of converted Necron units for my army going from left to right: Lord, Immortal, Warrior and Destroyer.

Now a friend of mine knows someone who ‘believes’ they can resin cast me the components are need to complete the army such as the tomb Spyder head, immortal body and even the classic space marine jump back. All of which GW will likely not sell separately or anytime soon.
Now I’d like some opinions about this?
My mate tells me its okay, it’s GW fault for not providing me with enough notice and if the details are good enough not many people will notice anyway.
Problem is most of my armies will likely end up in tournaments like the GT and I’m worried that if someone like the judges notice the difference in weight I’ll be in trouble.
To cast and bring this unique army to the board!
-- Or --
Not to cast as its too risky and abandon it entirely!
That is the question I’ll like you guys to help me answer? neurodisruptor March 28th, 2008, 23:35 I vote Cast It!
I understand your concern, but mull these points over.
In a tournament, only the majority of th model must be GW. That means th rest can be whatever you want...bits from other ranges, toys, greenstuff, etc.
It is perfectly legal and approved for you to cast parts from GW models as long as you use them privately and dont sell them.
Beautiful work by the way. DoctorDogmeat March 28th, 2008, 23:41 I had a conversation with my dad about casting things such as wraithguard. We decided the wraithguard models were so sympol it wouldn't take that much effort. We never got round to it though!
I say, cast it! Andusciassus March 28th, 2008, 23:53 Well... I'm not really sure, so I'll just skip the voting part.
I don't think you'r really allowed to copy copyrighted material, even if it's for personal use only, it sounds a bit fishy to me...but I do remember an example of it, a small "how to copy purityseals using a GS-mold"-guide being printed in White Dwarf a while back...
It's a dilemma I am happy not to have. It would be pretty sad to be thrown out of a tounarment on a counterfeit-basis when you've only made your army, nevermind how understandable your cause would be.
But have you tried the trading sites?
I know Barter town can be a great place, and you could always have a bits-request post here too, I guess modelling forum or even your sig would be a good place.
If nothing else works I think ebAy can be quite rewarding if you only show some patience.
Whatever you decide to do, I hope it goes really well and I'd love to see this army completed.
You could even try to write/phone/nag-like-crazy to/on GW and try to get a deal with them directly, offer them to put it on their site or the WD or whatever. Make sure they get to see your earlier armies, they are fantastic examples of the creativity that comes with the hobby. Do you know of a direct contact to someone important rather than the mindless zombies on the mail order phone lines that won't continuelly say sorry and 'it will depend on demand' cause thats what i get when i nag and ask for soloutions to this problem? Andusciassus March 29th, 2008, 00:05 I'd try to address my inquiery to someone who you know to be an avid converter, like Christian Burnes or even Guy Haley (spelling might be critical on those names though...).
Why not try the "How to get your stuff featured in WD"-thingie that use to be in the beginning of each issue... Kazuo_Kiriyama March 29th, 2008, 09:39 I say cast it. And that destroyer looks just like a command n conquer tank either nod or scrin. Inquisitor Proiteus March 29th, 2008, 11:51 I'd feel a little better if I had more of an understanding of what GW had planned, people keep telling me that bits are going to be brought back in a year or so, but i've been told by GW employes that they will be sold in customization packs or complete collector's miniatures.
The Immortal may still be possiable 'legally' if they bring back both the classic Immortal and Jumpback? But I'll certainly be casting my tomb spyder heads (I need 19 of them after all and I don't want to have to pay £190 for them) BrotherAzriel March 29th, 2008, 12:04 DO IT MAN!!!! go for it mate, some very good work there, it would be sad if you couldent finish such a decent project.
very terminator esqe! Pika_Power March 29th, 2008, 12:09 Remember, you know nothing about it being cast, you got the bits off ebay, and decided to use them. Jaffar_Hasad March 29th, 2008, 18:38 How about instead of breaking the law and doing something stupid, you do something productive. Make them yourself fool! Get GS, make it ovalish, then make some GS lenses. Nothing illegal about that. That way you can mold it all you want, and not put LO in the uncomfortable position of voting on whether you should break copyright laws.
Now go out and do something productive, or I shall taunt you a second time! Konstantin March 29th, 2008, 18:51 Cast em, cause as long as you are not selling them and only using them for personal uses, GW can't do anything bout it.8Y CraftworldsRus March 29th, 2008, 19:13 Ok, I hate to rain on everyones parade here, since I love your idea, and at first voted "Cast it!". Then I remembered something I had seen a while ago about a lawsuit, and went on the GW website to find this:
"Casting
Do not cast any materials that are based upon Games Workshop material. Games Workshop has to maintain a strict policy on this to fight counterfeiters. We would also remind you that reproduction for personal use is NOT an automatic exclusion in respect of copyright protection in many territories worldwide."
Games Workshop US - Home - Legal (http://us.games-workshop.com/home/legal/can_cant_do.htm)
So, there, I guess, is your answer. However, depending on where ou live, you might have the right to cast for personal use, I would say look at your local laws, just to be safe. I doubt you would ever be caught, but I am assuming the moral issue matters here.
Besides, I think by things like bits trading, bits websites, and such, you may be able to make headway. Have you checked

The only thing you will have trouble with is the tomb spider heads. Inquisitor Proiteus March 30th, 2008, 04:13 I agree. Which is why I'm only thinking of casting the one component I can't get (not without spending up to £190 for it anyway) so with the exception of the Tomb Spyder head I won't cast anything else. But if GW fail to bring back the Classic Immortal & Jumpback I may have to reconsider! Jaffar_Hasad March 30th, 2008, 04:56 I agree. If you can mold them, you probably have the materials to... what's that thing people have been saying... MAKE THEM YOURSELF! Cyric the Mad March 30th, 2008, 15:55 To begin with, the notion that commercial sale is necessary for copyright violation to be illegal is false - it is the reproduction of copyrighted works that is illegal. Selling reproductions of copyrighted works is just more likely to get you noticed. If GW actually came after you for your infringement you could try to make the infringement seem trivial, but it is anyone's guess what a judge would think of it.
Just to remove this point from a block of text: What you are proposing is illegal whether or not your intention is to sell it.
Regardless of the other factors at play in your dilemma (one that I am truly sorry to learn of, by the way - and I would take Andus's advice: start yelling at people until you get what you want. You'd be amazed how often that works), this thread encourages the violation of Games Workshop's copyright and therefore must be closed.
Best of luck to you, sir. The conversions look amazing and I hope you find a way to continue your efforts. I hope we get to see more pics in the showcase. | |
