View Full Version : LO Miniature Exchange King Ulrik Flamebeard April 1st, 2008, 00:32 LO Miniature Exchange
Yes, once again it is time for one of Kuffy’s infamous “I saw this idea on another site and decided to steal it” threads. =D I hope people are up for this, as it should be a great idea if it works.
Along the lines of the LOC project this is a miniature give away, except there is no buying or charity involved. Instead it is a chance for you as a member to receive a miniature painted by another member upon the forum to keep as your very own.
Here are the rules:
HOW WILL IT WORK?
- Well once you’ve signed up (see “How do I sign up?”), a secret draw will be held and each participant will be sent a PM, with the name and address of the person they are to paint for (keep this a secret).
- Once you receive a name you pick, convert (if you wish) and paint your miniature (see “Can I send any type of figure?”).
- Before you post it, please try and take a photo. Whilst it’s great to give, it’s better to see what else has been sent, so by taking a photo, you let everyone else see, and enjoy, your creation.
- Post your figure. It is strongly recommended that you send minis by some form of trackable post. In the UK this is called 'Recorded' or 'Signed For Delivery'. Whilst this will cost a little more, it will ensure the figure does arrive (post is not infallible) and will give you peace of mind.
- When your recipient lets you now it’s arrived, please post a picture of your creation on LO (they’ll be a pinned thread for photos).
- Sit back and wait for your mini to arrive (if it hasn’t already done so) and be sure to let your painter know it’s arrived – positive feedback is always welcome too.
- If you want to, then inclusion of a short paragraph as to your choice of mini is welcomed.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Absolutely anyone on the site is welcome to join in. Whatever your level of modelling expertise, the exchange is an opportunity for you to paint a figure you might not normally do, and maybe stretch your painting talents a little. The fun really is in the giving (trust me).
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Simply put your name in this thread and then PM King Ulrik Flamebeard your address for postage. This will then be passed on to your painter once the draw is made. If you have any special requirements (i.e can't post very far) let Kuffy know when you PM him so he can try and sort you out.
As this will be LO’s first miniature exchange, I am limiting the capacity to a maximum of 16 – 20. If we get twenty that be great, otherwise I will be forced to cap it at an even number (ie, 16, 18, or 20) to make sure everyone has a ‘partner’.
In addition, should you desire to have a specific member in mind that you JUST HAVE to paint a miniature for, then please include it into your entry PM, and I shall try to sort out members as best as I can. If multiple members request the same member, then it’ll be first come first served.
I’ll keep this post updated at the bottom with a list of participants.
CAN I SEND ANY TYPE OF FIGURE?
There are certain rules:
* All minis should be 25-30mm scale.
* Minis can be from any manufacturer.
Beyond that there are some guidelines:
* Try and put some thought into what you paint for your recipient. This is not an excuse to offload the guff from the bottom of your bits box. Likewise basing the minis in accordance with their role in the relevant rule book might well be a nice touch.
* Research on the forum is key. Have a look at your recipient’s army blog/painting and hobby posts/army lists/tactics articles and so on to try and get an idea of what they may like. Once the draw is made there will be a wishlist thread so you can also use this for ideas. There is no compulsion for you to give the recipient what they ask for, or go out and buy a new figure especially, but tailoring what you have to what they want is a nice touch.
* If you are stuck for ideas about the painter and want guidance then PM Kuffy or me, and we’ll give you some ideas or PM the painter to find out a little more about them, this ensures anonymity.
* If you’re particularly proud of your creation, you could always sign the base.
WHAT ARE THE DEADLINES?
The deadline for entering the exchange is 30th April 2008.
The deadline for posting your figure is 30th June 2008 which gives you about two months to produce a figure. Even I can manage that.
WHAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENS AND I CAN’T FINISH THE EXCHANGE?
Everybody knows that real life can take some pretty unexpected turns. If it suddenly turns out that you can’t complete on time (or at all), let Kuffy know, and he’ll see if he can sort out an alternative something for your recipient. Please don’t just let the deadline pass and remember - late is better than not at all.
Having said all this, please bear in mind that someone else will be putting time and effort into a mini and expecting something in return. Therefore the simple solution is don’t sign up if you think you’ll have trouble meeting the deadline. It's worth underlining that, if you sign up, you're going to have to take one of your miniatures, take time to paint/convert it and be prepared to send it just about anywhere.
ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW?
Please try to keep who you are painting for a secret. It’s much more fun that way!
Before you sign up please make sure you’re aware of the risks involved. Unlikely as it may be, you might receive nothing.
Be aware that there is a fair chance your mini will have to be sent overseas, make sure that you are comfortable with this before deciding to join. If this is going to be a problem, please indicate this in your sign up post (or PM to Kuffy) and we’ll try and work around this, although we cannot guarantee anything until we have a full list of participants
Any other problems, PM Kuffy

Kuffy Inquisitor Blackadder April 1st, 2008, 17:57 After a few hours of heavy thinking(interrupted by the conversion of space marines) I have decided that I would like to participate if at all possible :)

OK. Will add you.
Remember people, when entering you need to reply to this thread AND PM me your mailing address.
Kuffy minus_t April 2nd, 2008, 21:17 Hm.
As much as it deeply (deeply, deeply) pains me to join in with something he 'thought of' (stole), I suppose that, for the good of the forum, I shall enter.
C'mon people, if I can get off my skinny, lazy ass to paint something for someone else, surely some of you can too!

Yay! You are just jealous that I am doing it and not you, dude. =p Admit it. Lets see who you draw then. =D
Come on people! One miniature, two months to get it sent. You can do it, easily.
Kuffy Killswitch April 2nd, 2008, 21:35 I'm in, only one question. Is it any mini? Or is there a specific one we must paint, etc?
-J King Ulrik Flamebeard April 2nd, 2008, 21:42 I'm in, only one question. Is it any mini? Or is there a specific one we must paint, etc?
-J
Any mini is allowed. However, the idea would be to aim it for your given painter. For example, say they played space marines, say Black Templars, then painting an Ork for them might be a bit off, unless they would enjoy the mini. That is the aim, but any miniature is allowed.
Kuffy Andusciassus April 2nd, 2008, 21:46 Well, if -t is in I better get in on this too.
That way, when he confesses to net being able to make the deadline you can count on me being there to make things even:)
Just kidding of course. I shall from here on be known as the making-the-deadline-man...
What I mean to say is "I'm in" King Ulrik Flamebeard April 2nd, 2008, 21:49 Remember, the PM with mailing address is required for entry to be accepted. =)
Nice to see some more members getting involved. =D

I shall enter!

What? Why that face? What did I do? :(
Ooooh your foot. I am sorry. I totally didn't see it. o.o minus_t April 2nd, 2008, 22:04 Well, if -t is in I better get in on this too.

-t. slorak April 2nd, 2008, 22:16 One way to get what you want painted is to perhaps mail out the parts/figure you want painted to your person... I have seen ones done this way...
Either way it is all good. :) Jaffar_Hasad April 2nd, 2008, 22:44 One way to get what you want painted is to perhaps mail out the parts/figure you want painted to your person... I have seen ones done this way...

well then it's not too sneaky.
How about everyone just say something like:
"Hi, I'm Jaffar. I like long walks on the beach, but I prefer 40k. I play Imperial Fists, but I love anything that is well converted. I know yellow is a pain, so a techmarine or librarian would be cool (since I have neither). Sometimes I like to get really crazy, and make non-power armored units. If it's well converted, I'll love it." aeroplane April 2nd, 2008, 23:05 I love the idea! Please count me in!
Jim
. Killswitch April 2nd, 2008, 23:28 That works Jaff...
'I'm Killswitch, and well, I play Orkz. This should be cool because all the new models are drop-dead sexy. Anything works for me, but if you must know, I play Footsloggers. Long walks on the beach are cool, but I prefer a good old fashion 'WAAAAGH' across a field thoroughly soaked in the blood of my fellow Orkz, as well as my enemies.'
-J slorak April 2nd, 2008, 23:40 well then it's not too sneaky.

Ha ha... Yeah - personally I don't really care what method is used. When Kuffy mentioned finding out what your "person" wanted rather than painting something random I was thinking of an even simpler way of meeting those goals... ;)
Personally I like the idea of the person getting what they get. Simply from the perspective of an "art" perspective rather than a "game" perspective. Your "person" is more likely to put forth the very best effort in creating something that they like.
It's all good! :)
Cheers,
-Mike Inquisitor Blackadder April 2nd, 2008, 23:46 Well, one look at my threads and you can see I focus on space marine stuff pretty much all of the time. But it depends who I'm partnered with;)...I was always picked last in P.E *sniffs*
 King Ulrik Flamebeard April 2nd, 2008, 23:49 The draw of whom paints for whom will be secret, with only myself knowing the full draw. To find what to paint them, you should check the forum for their minis/posts. After this, if you cannot find what you need that way, then you pm me with a request. I will contact them and ask, that way it is all still a surprise of who is getting what from whom. A bit of fun.

I'd love to get into this (especially since -t had to go and call me lazy) ,but i don't have tons of spare minis laying around, of different armies to use.
plus I don't collect WFB so if the request of 'wish list" is for something I don't have, (i.e."Hey i would love a Ratling sniper!") getting it shipped to Hawaii in time to sand, file, clip, convert, prime, then paint it'll be past the deadline.

Sounds like a good idea, but I won;t be able to participate, as my painting skills aren't exactly up to snuff for something like this =P. (Sorry if this is answered but I'm at work and don't have mush time to read all three pages!) Also when and to whom we will ask for the mini... or the mini is something the other makes without asking?
But I'm in! :) King Ulrik Flamebeard April 4th, 2008, 18:59 ALL POSITIONS ARE FILLED
Tsele - The images can be posted in this thread. There will be a thread for the completed miniatures to be posted, up in.
However, to those involved, please do not reveal the member you have been drawn to paint for. This is suppose to be a surprise and a bit of fun, so lets keep it a surprise.
Also, once the drawn has been done; in the next few days, you will have until the end June to have your miniature shipped off. If members involved would be so kind to post here what kind of miniature they'd like to receive. Otherwise, members should do research in their selected member for a better idea. If you're still not sure, then PM me and I shall PM your member with a request. =)
Kuffy Tsele April 4th, 2008, 19:07 Phew... the last one! Nice!
I would like to add to my ongoing Space Wolves army, the Ice Wolves, a Wolf Priest, Rune Priest or a Wolf Captain... failing that a Wolf Guard or a Grey Hunter (plenty choices to go with!)
The color scheme is fairly simple! Codex Grey for the armor, with red shoulder pads, the trims of the shouder pads as well as the gun are boltgun metal with a black wash, eyes red and the fur details are scorched brown-bestial brown-bleached bone... the soft armor is black!
The surprise detail is very nice! So KUF you will be PM us as to whom we do? ;Y King Ulrik Flamebeard April 4th, 2008, 19:33 The surprise detail is very nice! So KUF you will be PM us as to whom we do? ;Y
I will be indeed the one PM'ing you all with which member you have been drawn to paint a miniature for. The PM will include the address for the member in question. =)
I shall do the draw in the next few days, should be by Monday at the latest.
Kuffy Tsele April 4th, 2008, 19:45 Ok Kuffy... I feel so eager to start... :ballon: King Ulrik Flamebeard April 5th, 2008, 05:26 OK, everyone (except one who I am waiting for the address for) should now have a PM with a member's name and address to send it too. If you do not, or there is some problem, PM me and I'll deal with it quickly.
Now, you have until the 30th June 2008 to get the miniature sent by. Plenty of time, I think you'll agree. So, please do not reveal who you have been drawn - you are free to put WIP images up on the forum if you should choose to do so, just do not name who it is for. Now if members would be so kind as to leave a note in the thread 9ie, this one) as to what they would ideally like to receive. I'll put mine now...
[ I would like to receive...anything. I am not bothered what miniature I am given, as long as the member has tried their best. =) ]
If there are any problems, then you can either PM me or email me on the addresses in my signature. =)
Kuffy slorak April 5th, 2008, 08:06 Doesn't matter to me either. I would like something inspired by creativity.
Cheers,

As far as miniatures go-I'm generally open to anything, and i'd like whomever ended up with me on their half to have fun with what they paint. Only thing I would hope to not see would be Space Marines... Canew April 5th, 2008, 15:59 I'm not terribly picky. If it's painted well and is cool to look at, I'm happy. About the only thing I don't like is nurgle stuff. No offense to the nurgle fans out there, but the "gross" factor is a little over the top for me.
Right now, I'm working on a marine army (my color scheme's hard to reproduce -- *I* barely have it figured out!) and I have an ongoing Necron project. Right now, I'm trying to decide on a metal scheme for my immortals that is different from the aged chrome of the rest of my army. I'm also planning an IG army that looks like the Tallarn. I also just bought a ton of Cygnar stuff, but I haven't even started that. That's about all I have time/money for, but like I said, I like anything that shows effort and is fun to look at. Inquisitor Blackadder April 5th, 2008, 16:30 I will accept anything from the Warhammer fantasy range as I have too much 40k stuff :P I really don't mind what army it's from, as said before, as long as it's exciting to look at! Good luck everyone! 8Y and have fun!
 Seasonreaper April 5th, 2008, 16:53 Despite not entering myself, I'd like to see how this entire thing turns out. Might mean I enter the next time this kinda thing happens (if it happens). Looking forward to seeing everyones efforts if they decide to show them 8Y. King Ulrik Flamebeard April 5th, 2008, 17:05 If all goes well, then there shall be a sequel. But, I find things like this lose their 'charm' if done too often. It might only be once or twice a year, I dunno. This is a test, to see how well things go and that. Of course, sometimes kinks need to be worked out - tis why you improve it for next time. =)
Kuffy aetherguy881 April 5th, 2008, 19:15 Like I said, I would like a Space Wolf and such, I just didn't give a relative paint scheme...
Here's an example for whoever happens to have me. Linky (http://www.putfile.com/album/116389) BobaHat April 5th, 2008, 20:20 I don't care what I get as long as it's fun and made with feeling! :p Jaffar_Hasad April 5th, 2008, 20:35 Could I get something from one of the Imperium's factions. Maybe an ad-mechanicus model (EX: enginseer, techmarine), an inquisitor, or an IG officer. Just something human-ish, if you have another idea, just go with it. Please don't spend too much, and if you feel confident convert and sculpt to your heart's content. 8Y
Thank you whoever is working on mine. Andusciassus April 5th, 2008, 20:49 It looks as if I've got a victim, mowhahaha!!!
My only wish is that the one doing my model do what he or she pleases. Have a good time building and painting the model and I'll give it a special place in my cabinet. Toastee April 5th, 2008, 20:57 While I would normally ask for something to do with either of my Chapters, I don't have set in stone colours and what not sorted for them.
I don't really mind what the person does for me really. I'm with Andusciassus really. I just hope you have a good time making and painting it. I would say it would go into a cabinet, but I don't have one yet D:! FabricatorGeneralMike April 5th, 2008, 21:15 I guess im pretty much the same as most of the above posters, I don't really mind anything as long as you had a blast doing it =o] minus_t April 5th, 2008, 23:59 I'm copying what Andu said.
Have fun doing my model (whoever you are!), and do something cool!
But not a dwarf.

Best of luck to everyone!
-t. Thirdeye April 6th, 2008, 00:27 Hey Guys:
Glade to see things are moving forward. We’re into the “made a wish” phase. Me? I’m open to anything. Of course if ya got an extra female Dracon with the strapon agoniser, that would be nice. I seem to have lost mine… Damn!
Oh Look! Look’s like someone’s going to get a Techmarine!
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a53/23skdu/Techmarine/DSCN2377.jpg Aubec April 7th, 2008, 17:18 I am really open to something cool and converted. If I had to pick it would be Daemonhunters for 40k or Chaos Mortals: Nurgle or High Elves for WFB. I am looking forward to this ! Tsele April 7th, 2008, 19:21 The basic model is ready... I think it has some space for a little GS here and there...
Pics yet to come... 8Y Shonuff April 7th, 2008, 20:08 okay, Victi- ...i mean Recipient has been found. I have located his/her model of their choosing (or preferring) and I have found th bucket of appropriate latex house paint. :)
kidding , kidding, i hope you don't mind that neon orange upside down can of spraypaint they use to mark things on a construction site, for primer, because..well..
nono i can't be that mean. I hope to produce my best painted model yet. aeroplane April 7th, 2008, 21:59 I too would like to echo what Andusciassius said -- anything you would enjoy to make and have fun painting would be great!

See. That's helpful. Everyone that thinks it is nice to just say "be creative and make what you want" are actually bad bad people. I need motivation. With no motivation and creativity to work with, I think you might end up with a snake (rolled up GS with eyes and mouth poked in). Ok I won't be that mean, but I'm just the kind of person who likes goals. Cyric the Mad April 7th, 2008, 23:56 I'm kind of in agreement with Jaffar on this. So whoever drew me, you are of course free to do as you so desire, but if you're looking for ideas, you can't go wrong with anything Dark Angels (Chappies are good) or Wood Elves (Wardancers are good). I pimp my painting projects pretty liberally in the forum, so go nuts. Aubec April 15th, 2008, 01:49 All right, I am working on a sorceror of tzeentch for the exchange and want some advice. Do I got for the standard blended blues and purples or something really off the wall that may not be liked ? Feedback and suggestions please ! aeroplane April 15th, 2008, 02:16 Hmmm... That's interesting... I'm working on one as well... I'm going for a fairly standard paintjob, with some nifty conversions.
. Jaffar_Hasad April 15th, 2008, 02:19 I think I'll be finishing up that Plague Marine I started a while back. I hope it'll since it's one of the best things I've done conversion-wise. hazzbob April 21st, 2008, 20:28 Hi Everyone,
Sorry to whoever drew me... i havent been able to get to my PC so this little wish list thingy is a little late.... to be honest id be perfectly happy with any thing deamonhunter (greynights preferably) or spacemarines because thats all i am collecting atm.
Thanks
Harry
p.s i would like to apologize in advance to the recepient of my piece... it probably going to be a Dark Angels chaplin, but my painting isnt excellent so it probably wont be great... hope you enjoy Mr X...lol Jaffar_Hasad April 21st, 2008, 20:39 I'd just like to say that the model I'm making is the Plague Marine I started a while ago. Painting will begin within the week (if I can squeeze it between 3 track meets). I really hope the recipient enjoys it. slorak April 23rd, 2008, 08:32 Took me a little bit to decide on what I was going to do and after about a week I think I have come up with a solid plan.
I didn't want to just do a plain vanilla marine so I decided on posing the marine as such to where it could be used as a special marker for the game. Hopefully it will be a bit more interesting this way... ;)
http://www.curdledmilk.com/wp-content/gallery/work-in-progress/sitting.jpg
Definitely a rough fit at the moment. Plan on altering it a bit further and cleaning it up. More pictures will be forthcoming as I get more work put in... ;)
Cheers,
-Mike Tsele April 23rd, 2008, 14:23 @Slorak you have made a wonderful piece... that's one nice marker!
@hazzbob: Nice to meet another Harry in here! ;) Thirdeye April 26th, 2008, 18:02 Hey Gang:
So, what do ya think, standing or on bike?
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a53/23skdu/Techmarine/DSCN23861.jpg
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a53/23skdu/Techmarine/DSCN2387.jpg slorak May 1st, 2008, 23:09 Finally in the home stretch of construction. I should be priming and starting the painting tonight. Woot!
Sorry for the dark pics (I did not use my light box! :) ) I finished cutting the buildings on the base and roughing them up a bit. Glued down the slate on the base and adorned it a bit further with a leaning bolter, helmet, and some purity seals.
http://www.curdledmilk.com/wp-content/gallery/work-in-progress/mini_exchange1_wip.jpg
I know it is dark but my goal was to showcase a marine that was injured and calling in assistance. I thought it told an interesting narrative that would work well into a special objective counter.
Here is a brighter picture of the base itself:

Cheers,
-Mike Tsele May 1st, 2008, 23:18 @Thirdeye: The bike is awesome... truly... but he sits on it as in the end of the battle relaxing. Just my thought. If you made the pose more dynamic would be super!
@slorak: What can I say? Jaffar_Hasad May 2nd, 2008, 01:03 SUPER LINK! (http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/modelling/116674-im-not-just-sure-im-destroyer-plague-positive.html#post1127164)
Well that is my progress thus far. Thirdeye May 2nd, 2008, 05:58 @ Tsele: Yeah, he's kinda laid back, and no hands on the bars either! LOL!
Well, understand I wasn’t planning on putting him on the bike. I just kinda stuck him on there as an afterthought. But he doesn’t look half bad. What do ya think, should I do him on the bike or standing? If I do him on the bike I’ll pose him better, for sure.
About the bike: If you want the bits to build your own I can send them to ya. The one in the pic is one of the test-beds I built when I was working-out the conversion. I used it to see how all the parts fit together. As you can see it got kinda beat-up in the process. If I were to put the Techmarine on a bike I’d build a new one.
@slorak: I like it. Nice little vignette. Only thing not quite working for me is the grip on the knife, doesn’t look quite right. And you need to reposition the thumb on the left hand so he’s holding the Auspex more natural like. slorak May 2nd, 2008, 07:33 @slorak: I like it. Nice little vignette. Only thing not quite working for me is the grip on the knife, doesn’t look quite right. And you need to reposition the thumb on the left hand so he’s holding the Auspex more natural like.
Yeah I am not 100% satisfied with the knife either. I chopped up the hand a fair bit but even so it just didn't position quite right after assembly. The legs probably needed to be adjusted even more. Personally I wanted the knife to be angled down more in a "casual defense" type position but the legs are in the way and even with the arm chopped up as I did it wasn't going to work within the space. :( As it is though the arm is wresting on the leg and the blade actualy goes over the foot so it doesn't look so obtrusive as it does in this angle...
I may adjust the thumb if I can (already primed) as I see your point. If not no real big deal.
Thank you for the comments. Tsele May 2nd, 2008, 20:15 What I post after slorak? Nice... not for my mini though...
Since it will be a surprise for the receiver I will add only this pictures ;) Then I will start painting and when the person gets it I will surely post pictures of the finished mini! I have gathered all my intelligence needed to start painting... :)

the legs anyway, except for the odd bit here and there. Might add some bits to the base. Still have to do the top. Hey, no proplem. We have until, what, Aug 1st., right? King Ulrik Flamebeard May 16th, 2008, 14:56 The deadline for posting your figure is 30th June 2008 which gives you about two months to produce a figure. Even I can manage that.
The sending date is the end of next month. So still quite a bit.
I am still here and hoping to get mine sent off on time, be bad show if I didn't, but over the next few weeks I do have my end of year exams for uni. Rather important. Still, I shall try my hardest to get it sent in time.
(And yes, I am still alive and all that, just been rather busy/lazy.)
Kuffy Aubec May 16th, 2008, 16:13 I am still working on my exchange mini regardless of the site issues. I have changed models 3 times but I am still commited to this exchange. slorak May 16th, 2008, 16:19 Aside from taking a short painting break I am still on target to complete by end of June for sure. :) I will probably paint some more tonight and this weekend. ;)
Cheers,

I have a few in mind, and would quite like to do some conversion work, but I just can't decide what to do...

I shall commit to something, buy it tomorrow and start this week!
Hah, deadlines!
Now, to break them...
-t. BobaHat May 18th, 2008, 11:57 I'm sorry for my lack of pics. My digicam isn't working but I might post some blurry webcam pics later on. I'm still in! :) slorak May 18th, 2008, 20:09 Here is my work in progress teaser. Not the best pics but...
I was able to get back into painting the last 2 nights and made significant progress. I figure another night or 2 should do it. In my rush to get the figure assembled I miscalculated the placement of his backpack and he doesn't quite sit on it correctly... It doesn't look too bad unless you are staring... don't stare... ;?

-Mike Tsele May 21st, 2008, 15:20 Mine is almost ready as well... Some highlighting is needed... But I don't want to show pictures as it will be profound as to who the receiver will be!
Can I do that? I promise I will post pictures of the mini as soon as I ship him! ;) Shonuff May 22nd, 2008, 03:47 *hops out of the scenery forum and sees this thread*
Oh yeah i'm in this huh? guess i better get to work, eh? :P
Just kidding. I've almost completed the converting. Whoever my recipient is of this model,
I hope you don't mind a nice base with some corpses on it.
I'm thinking about working on a small corner/diorama for the model to sit in. he/she's a beaut, and i hope you love conversion work.
I can't show you the model, because it'll definitely give away who it's for, so...i'll see you all end of June.:) Canew May 22nd, 2008, 16:25 Basecoating is coming along a bit more slowly than I'd like, but it's going well. I only get 1-2 nights a week to paint, so the metallic basecoats will have to wait until next week, but by then I hope I've put on enough paint to make it photo-worthy. Thirdeye May 23rd, 2008, 04:18 Hey slorak, nice! The yellow armor makes a good contrast with the dark wall. Speaking of the wall, that came out particularly good. What paints/techniques did you use to get that finish? slorak May 23rd, 2008, 06:16 Hey slorak, nice! The yellow armor makes a good contrast with the dark wall. Speaking of the wall, that came out particularly good. What paints/techniques did you use to get that finish?
Everything was primed white. I then took black ink and washed the walls. The base color was a watered down brown violet (vallejo model colors). I think I mixed in a bit of grey or bone for a second pass. I then took flesh ink and dabbed it around the bolts on the wall followed by an orange ink. I only let the ink sit for a bit before "pulling" with a sponge. This created a stipple kind of effect and left the bolt areas looking "rusty".
The metal piping was given a base of brass and then I applied vallejo verdigris to it.

-Dwayne Thirdeye May 26th, 2008, 03:23 Hey Dwayne, not to worry. I’m sure we’ll be going this again soon. I already have my next exchange picked out: a Librarian (on a bike?)!

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a53/23skdu/Techmarine/Torso.jpg Montyhaul May 29th, 2008, 00:47 I love the idea of this project, I'm gutted that I didn't get in early enough to sign up for it, I hope to get a chance to if it happens again. Roll on July! Keen to see the final products. Tsele May 29th, 2008, 14:38 I believe everyone in here is keen in seeing his model... I like the aura of surprise there is in this exchange...
Oh... and I have finished my part of the exchange... as soon as I get him posted I will post pics! Inquisitor Blackadder May 29th, 2008, 21:40 Just to let y'all know I am still in, my mini is very nearly finished and I should have it packed up and pictures posted in the next few week. Can't wait to see everyone elses minis!

Anywho...I guess since the model is in the mail, I can SORT OF show you all pictures.
THe model request was a bit..out there, and at first i was like ;?
"nahh, no way i'm doing that."
But one of my friends challenged me, and I took the challenge.
I'll post a...modest picture of the finished product....0:

If not, and you're over 18, i'll link you from a PM.
I have 12 shots of the finished product on the Photobucket site.

NO, seriously, ya got me all wrong, honest! :| I’m not like that at all! :ballon: And the fact that I’ll be wanting a Slanneshi Daemonette with augmented crotch claw for the next exchange has no bearing on your vile, malicious, and slanderous comments! ;) Shonuff June 4th, 2008, 19:12 *sighs and digs around in his box of random minis for the exact claw-placed Slanneshi Deamonette he asked for.*

Unfortunately, due to work and exams and soon to be moving into a new house (so packing) I have not even started my exchange mini. =/ Its most likely going to be late, unless after my exams I can get it painted then, between packing. And the girlfriend shall be off around Europe for two weeks, hm..it's possible. We shall see, I'm just pointing out it might be a bit late.
If only I was actually organised. =|
Kuffy slorak June 9th, 2008, 16:02 Mine shipped out this weekend. Woot! Ahead of schedule. Yay me!!! ;?
Actually I am usually behind schedule it was nice to complete something early this time.
Cheers,
-Mike Tsele June 9th, 2008, 16:06 I don't know why but I had a slight problem in sending... they sent it back! So I will send it once more and if again sent back then I will have to contact Kuffy! Cyric the Mad June 9th, 2008, 17:47 I've got a decent start on mine, but it too may be slightly late.
Not that that'll stop me from laughing at Kuffy. :D Canew June 9th, 2008, 18:07 Basecoat has been taking me forever on mine, but then, experience tells me the basecoat is the longest, most painstaking part, so I guess that means I'm doing well! Hopefully I'll have piccies in my WIP thread tonight or tomorrow night. aeroplane June 9th, 2008, 20:54 I'm getting close to done. Mine has to travel half-way around the world (well, perhaps one-third of the way...) and I would like it to arrive near the deadline.

It WILL be done and posted by the end of this month, so no worries there. I just hope the little blighter likes it. ;) Jaffar_Hasad June 10th, 2008, 06:19 I feel bad for all of you. My exchange came into the mail today!  *dances some more with the cool smiley*
Amazing work. Thank you very much. I just hope the model you receive is half as good as the one you sent me. minus_t June 10th, 2008, 22:38 I feel shame-faced to announce that I have yet to start either.
This is sincerely through a desire to make an awesome conversion, however, rather than simply scavaging something from my bits box.
I should be able to start work on thursday, and we will see how quickly I am able to bash the finished product out...
-t. Aubec June 11th, 2008, 21:18 Well, I am finished but unfortunately my camera id dead. I am about to send it so hopefully my recipient will be able to post a few. Sorry for the technological snafu. I am a bit nervous though as my draw was an individual that has quite the skill with a brush. Toastee June 11th, 2008, 21:51 Never too late to start eh. o_o
Well, the house is filling with boxes, but I shall now start my own piece. This Empire Warrior Priest that I picked up at a car boot sale a couple of weeks back.
Warrior Priest by *Lauinav on deviantART (http://lauinav.deviantart.com/art/Warrior-Priest-88380239) Thirdeye June 13th, 2008, 17:03 OK, is done. Here’s the final pics. I should get it shipped out to some lucky trader soon. I think it came out pretty good. The pics don’t do it justice. It looks a lot better in real life. Kinda sad to see it go really, but I did make casts along the way so I could do another pretty easy if I wanted.

-Mike Canew June 27th, 2008, 19:26 Mine's coming along pretty well. If it doesn't get postmarked exactly on the 30th, it will be within a day or two, max. Overall, doing just fine. Can't do pics at the moment, though. Basecoating is done. Needs a few highlights and some glazes/washes to finish it off, I think, but looking good. It's my first shot at camouflage, too, and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised how well it came out. I got my exchange mailed off some days ago. I hope it gets there soon. Ummm, maybe not. I insured it for $500.00. Hey, it was a 3rdI original!

Also, whoever has been given my name and has not yet posted the mini out, bear in mind no-one will be able to recieve it until the 25th of August.

I hope it meets the minimum standards for what I see on LO. hazzbob August 18th, 2008, 15:11 Hi All,
I'm afraid that i have to be marked as one of those who has yet to finish. I have to apologize sincerely. I am back on track, and will soon have completed the model (a Dark Angels compnay master). The model is pretty standard due to the fact that my bitz box isn't huge. i have tried to give him what may be a unique edge with the painting, but compared to the standards of some others taking part in this exchange, it isn't great.
Pics should follow if i can dig out the camera.
<Harry> slorak August 18th, 2008, 21:29 I have to say that I am a little disappointed with the overall commitment level for this... I think a project like this is a very interesting take that allows for others to get a first hand feel for another artists style, etc... Unfortunately for the big delay from the original date it feels like it may never fully complete and that future installments are likely to not happen...
Please take what I am about to say with a grain of salt. Please note that any reference to "you" is not singled out to an individual but rather anyone involved with the project... I am really not a angry old man but I have a few (brutally honest) thoughts on this:
I can understand an open contest, saying you will participate and then not having the time by the completion date... The only person you really fail is yourself. However when you sign up to take on a project like this - you are not only committing to yourself but also to everyone else involved in the project. When you don't meet the deadline or drop out you affect everyone involved - not just yourself. I really do find it hard to believe that time really was a factor. Sure we all get busy in our lives, emergencies come up, etc... but honestly unless you were physically removed from your hobby for 2 months - I can't believe that life got into the way of completing it... Personal choice made it so that it wasn't completed on time. For whatever reason you just didn't want to do it... I paint slow. Usually I paint really slow. I also find that there are several days if not weeks that might come where I just don't feel like painting... I was still able to make the commitment to meet the deadline (in plenty of time I might add). I would also like to point out that this was completely voluntary. You chose to sign up for the project because you wanted to take part... No arm twisting was done.
In the future if something like this took off again - it might be best to think about it like this: Would you treat your job like this? Would you push off a work project past its deadline because you didn't feel like it? Would you treat your family like this? Would you push off a family gathering simply because you didn't feel like it?
If in the future - this kind of thing would happen again - I would still participate. I really like the concept of the mini-exchange. It doesn't have to be cost prohibitive and to be honest I am not really soured from not having received one this time around... I would still have a go at it... However I personally would like to see a bit more commitment in any future endeavors. Having said that - those that we do know about look great and I still have hope that everyone will eventually complete their projects and not kill this idea completely...
Mean spirited comment: "For Shame! For Shame!"
Cheers,
-Mike Toastee August 18th, 2008, 22:55 Having just moved (Finally) The new house is in a state. In fact, I've only just managed to get my PC set up a week after the move, so my work area should follow over the next couple of days. Aubec August 19th, 2008, 01:43 Well, I agree with your points Slorak. I mailed mine by the deadline but have to apologize for not posting any pics as my camera went haywire and poor phone pics are not what anyone wants to see. I would gladly participate in another even though I did not receive a model and will make ever effort to get pics posted as expected. Tsele August 19th, 2008, 16:18 Please note that any reference to "you" is not singled out to an individual but rather anyone involved with the project...
I have to second this before I start.
I am an active user of 3 Forums, one of which I am an Admin, collector, painter (not so good as slorak or -t but..., work full hours and have a personal life and fiancee...
I enlisted to this project because I have already participated in another two in another forum. I finished everything I vowed to finish in time, always, and sent them properly and carefully. I enlisted in this project because I liked the Fog of War surrounding it, the participants never knew from whom they will receive and all... I finished in time, so much time was left that I could do another one, and sent the mini to it's owner... I posted pics and everything, received the comments from you guys, and I'm grateful for these, and I was waiting...
I haven't seen many of the participants lately. I don't understand why... You have vowed to do something for someone else as a part of a project, as a bond to someone else... You will always know that a mini made by you will be played on a table possibly long way from you... I am proud of this. I am checking my receiver frequently... I "stalk" him, in a way, through here. I see he is logging in and checking the threads... If he has received something from someone a word of thanks or even a bad critique would be nice... Why hasn't he appeared for so much time?
If something like this happens again I will be part of it. I like giving people a part of me, a mini that has received many hours of attention...
Yours truly
Harry minus_t August 22nd, 2008, 17:09 Seeing as I'm one of those people who Slorak is moaning at, let me try and redeem them...
While I am happy to admit that this mini is hugely late, I hope the recipient will be happy with it.
It was one of the options he expressed a preference for, and while it is inexcusabley late, I think that late is better than never.
Many people will have problems with a project such as this, as real life is never as simple as it should be. The two months set aside for this project were (for me), very busy, and for me to paint a mini in the few spare hours I had would have been a cop-out, in my opinion. I'd much prefer to do something well and late, than not at all.
My final quibble with the project is that I was paired up with someone who I did not know, and had not seen around much on LO. This made it hard for me to find a project they would like (although the requests posts made this much easier), and hard for me to stay motivated, even when I did have time to paint.
I think I would have preferred there to have been more of a structure for the pairing, but that is simply me moaning.
Anyway, enough carping.

I wasn't moaning at anyone. Just responding honestly to how I felt about the tardiness of the project. I very much like the concept for the mini exchange - but I feel that just like the charity auction some of us participated in - the delay over the deadline for what seemed like the majority of the pieces kind of killed the excitement for it. I was really hoping for a gallery devoted to showcase these figures and we still don't know what several of them look like.
Believe me I know life gets in the way. Honestly I do... 2 kids, a full time job, house projects, people to please, and my ADD list of hobbies that I like to do, not to mention all the stuff I paint for other people... So I know that life gets in the way.... but is that truly the issue at hand? Is that why people couldn't get there stuff done?
I know moving is a valid excuse especially if you don't have access to your stuff for an extended time - been through that as well... so honestly no whining involved... Personally I would just hate to see a project like this die. If anything I think things like this should be given more attention. I think it helps advertise the community...
Cheers,
-Mike Aubec August 23rd, 2008, 02:06 -T, thank you very much for posting pictures of the mini I sent you. I apologize for not being able to post my own pics. I hope you liked it and that it was painted decently. I tried out the gw washes for the first time and weren't really familiar with what to expect. You elf looks wonderful and I envy whoever it is going to. Thanks again, -T. slorak August 23rd, 2008, 05:20 I'm predicting mine will be opened in.. 3...2... what time is it on the west coast? I don't know when mail arrives there.
Ha ha... Yes a package was there when I arrived home from work. You must have ESP or something... ;)
Very nice. Yes you can never have too much plague and disease... LOL. I must say that I really did enjoy looking at your conversion and I really think the face turned out very well. The posturing is what I like the most. Very zombie like.
.............
-T: Just wanted to say that now that I had a chance to view the pics of your figure... Great Job! The skintone in particular looks very nice!
Cheers,

Well, I agree with you that it would be a pretty bad thing if those who have yet to complete their projects were in that state because they just lost enthusiasm and didn't care.
In my defense, it was real life getting in the way. I actually enjoyed painting this mini. It gave me a chance to do urban camo patterns and a light glazing technique in an attempt to make the material look "aged" or "faded." I also had a chance to use Devlan Mud, all firsts for me, as was the race the model comes from (it's an Ork). I'm also pretty darned proud of some the aged metal look I've managed to do here. It looks better than some of my Necrons! It's been a lot of fun, and as long as it stays glued together finally, I think it looks pretty darned good.
Regardless, I'm one of the scofflaws who is sending his out late. I won't bother with my litany of excuses, only a promise that yes, mine WILL be finished tonight and out tomorrow. I won't even be able to post pics of it tonight, but I'm hoping for a "better late than never" mentality, and humbly request my recipient post pics when it arrives. therupert August 27th, 2008, 10:45 I'd like to get in on this if possible!
Thanks! King Ulrik Flamebeard August 29th, 2008, 21:08 I'd like to get in on this if possible!
Thanks!
Sorry, but the sign up date was a long time ago. See the first thread for details. All places have been filled and paired off etc.
To all those involved;
I am sorry for being so lacklustre in this even though I organised it. I have had an awful lot of things on my plate these last few months, and my exchange mini was sent a bit late I did get it done. I should have spent more time near the beginning to sort it out, but was a bit lazy and had an impending move to a new home to sort.
I can understand things getting in the way, such as real life and such. In general, as I have attempted a number of things for this community - the painting contests, mini exchange and the charity sale - I seeing them as more testing the water. When things happen its great, but in all seriousness there hasn't been much along the lines of things like these here. The first few times there are always hitches and problems - these get ironed out as you learn. I'm trying to learn and trying to make this a great community with a lot of fun and some fun events. Tardiness tends to come with these things, a lot of the time its the length of the deadlines or others that people can't be bothered. I can sort one, but not the other. I saw the length of time as being a good length, within which everyone would have completed their mini and got it sent. Things don't always go the way you want, and should a member just give up and not send it, then...well they will not be welcomed next time for one. To me, these are like trying to escape from prison - there are many ways but only one is truly right for you and the circumstances; but it doesn't mean you give up. You try, until you get it right. ;) :)
Kuffy greymonk September 4th, 2008, 17:40 Looking forward to getting into the next round. Tsele September 4th, 2008, 17:55 I believe you're welcome... if this round finishes sometime! Shonuff September 17th, 2008, 02:30 Slorak has it right, I agree with him on his points. (except I was lucky and got a mini in exchange for mine I sent.)
-t, you make me enjoy this website most, due to the skill I see from your painting.
I personally will join the next one, if there is one, because as someone said, the fog-of-war was the cool part about it. Seasonreaper September 17th, 2008, 02:36 I agree that it would be good to see another similar event in the future, although I didn't enter this one and probably won't have the time to enter the next, it was still interesting to see what people created and sent out. Hopefully next time people will be a little more fitting to time schedules however =P. Nice job for those whose models I've seen, and I hope whoever you send them out to appreciates your work, as it is deserving =). SGluciousa September 17th, 2008, 02:40 If this is done again I would join in a heartbeat. Last time I was unfortunately gone so I never got to join. Also, I was not as good of a hobbyist as I am now (which is still not that great). I hope this is done again! Tsele September 17th, 2008, 13:38 because as someone said, the fog-of-war was the cool part about it.
And that was me... Nice to hear that you liked how I mentioned it!
Still no word if the recipient got his mini (or if he got if he liked it) and I believe mine has entered the Eye of Terror by now... Tulugaq September 17th, 2008, 19:03 This is something I could possibly take part in as well, if another one was attempted.
It's shocking how going from unemployed to having a full time job changes your perspective on what you can and can't do! Aubec September 18th, 2008, 15:43 I still pray and hope that one day my prince....um..er..I mean my mini will arrive in the mail. I have pretty much given up hope though at this point. I dont know if -t liked the mini I sent but it at least was done and went out by the deadline. Inquisitor Blackadder September 18th, 2008, 18:23 I garuntee that my mini will be sent off by monday. I promise :)
Just to let whoever did my one(if they have yet) that I have not received anything in the post yet. minus_t September 19th, 2008, 00:49 Believe it or not, my elf was posted off on Monday.
I have to admit, I am pretty awful at this "doing-things-on-time-without-anyone-there-to-shout-at-me" thing.
So, many apologies to my mysery recipient, again...
-t. frozencore September 19th, 2008, 07:36 I am looking for some of the 6th edition empire shield sprues. Jaffar_Hasad September 19th, 2008, 08:27 I am looking for some of the 6th edition empire shield sprues.
Um.. no. Shoo! This is NOT a trader zone thread.
Now back to the thread. This question is directed to the Exchange Organizer. I just so happen to be working on another one-off mini. Would it be bad if I made it, then sent it to someone who sent a mini, but never received one? It will be a black templar, and I have absolutely no use for it. King Ulrik Flamebeard September 19th, 2008, 13:21 Jaffar_Hasad - It wouldn't be bad no, but it would seem quite a few have failed to receive their exchanged mini. |
