Hey all.

Me and some friends are total newbs when it comes to warmachine, and we're trying to get some games on, but we're having a tough time tracking all the little effects and rules that are easily overlooked. Does anyone have some good suggestions for how to run a match, and not lose your mind over what spells are active, who's effecting what, and so on.

Charge: I couldn't really interpret the 'charge' maneuver.. Is it an attack or is it a movement? Can you charge without targetting something? Can you charge a friendly model?

I'm playing Khador, and I've got a light 350 setup with the box set (sorcha, jug, dest) and a manhunter.

questions on this:

1) One of my friends friends claims stealth does not affect spells, meaning something like Death Sentence can still target the Manhunter even if he's more than 5" away.

2) Convert: Does this spell affect solos? The game card he had says it can't, but the rulebook (prime:remix) only says warcasters. I said go for it, but the next turn my manhunter had already made mincemeat of Severius. :ninja3:

3) manhunter attack dice: When the manhunter charges, does he really get FOUR damage dice? Weapon master +1, Charge +1 ?

any other tips for a bunch'a noobs would be appreciated.

Always good to have another Khador player kicking around 8Y

There is a charge, and a charge attack. You must have a target for the charge, although it may be a friendly model, and you get the speed boost. As long as you end within you're combat range, after moving 3"+ in a straight line, you've made a successful charge. If you've made a successful charge, your first attack gets a free boost on the damage roll.

1) One of my friends friends claims stealth does not affect spells, meaning something like Death Sentence can still target the Manhunter even if he's more than 5" away.
As far as I know this is not true, however I'm not 100% on this one.

2) Convert: Does this spell affect solos? The game card he had says it can't, but the rulebook (prime:remix) only says warcasters. I said go for it, but the next turn my manhunter had already made mincemeat of Severius. :ninja3:
It may be used on solos, as it says "living trooper model." Although your manhunter will have to fail a command check. On top of that it's a very pricey spell to set off against a target with a very high command stat, so its not such a bad thing.

3) manhunter attack dice: When the manhunter charges, does he really get FOUR damage dice? Weapon master +1, Charge +1 ?
Yup, 4 damage dice it is. The charge is a boosted dice, while the weapon master is an additional.

Battle reports would be helpfull for tips and tricks ;Y

A good way to keep track of everything is use markers. The company Galeforce 9 makes plastic markers that covers various effects for each Warcaster and Warlock.

I use small, coloured glass pebbles to track focus. Works very vell.

Reference sheets are usefull as well when you are starting out. I recommend this one.
Bah I can't find it. Darn.

All attacks against a model with Stealth miss automaticly. Death Sentance have Offensive checked, meaning that it will need an magic attack roll to hit. Thus it will miss, because of Stealth.

Can you charge a friendly model? you may target friendlies or enemies with charges. You may target stuff that is out of range. In short, it is a ORDER. There are several general orders-run, charge, and others. These need to be given by the unit leader.

Charge in particular is a combination of movement and attack. You can charge and special attack too, just not charge and POWER ATTACK. So no charge and throw(unless other special rules apply).

Note, stealth specifically effects all ranged attacks and spells. Anything cast from further than 5" or shot from 5+" auto misses. Note: you can cast AOEs at them and hope for good scatters, and usually still kill stuff if you have AOEs.

2) Convert: Does this spell affect solos? The game card he had says it can't, but the rulebook (prime:remix) only says warcasters. I said go for it, but the next turn my manhunter had already made mincemeat of Severius. :ninja3:
remix is the current rules for all the models listed in it. Go with that as you did=)

3) manhunter attack dice: When the manhunter charges, does he really get FOUR damage dice? Weapon master +1, Charge +1 ?
Not exactly, but YES. Charges that go more than 3" get boosted damage rolls. Weapon masters get an ADDITIONAL DIE on damage. These terms are very different and very important. Since you can't boost an attack/damage roll more than once, you can't give a charging jack 4d6 on the damage (since charges are boosted already=). But stuff like man hunters can get the boosted attack, and then as many +d6 as other rules allow. Some feats and spell combos can stack as high as 6d6 on the charge.

Thanks for the replies guys. We played another match this weekend, but me vs. a friend who fields cryx. 350 armies.

And a question right off the bat: Asphyxious, are you friggin kidding me? Not only does he have probably the illest feat i've seen in the game, he makes the manhunter look like a fluffy bunny in melee. It took us a while, but basically, what lost the match for me was Asphyxious charging my jug, then spamming extra attacks for focus, popping feat, and disabling BOTH my juggernaut and my destroyer with the following attacks - ONLY TO POP WINGS AND FLY AWAY!!!! How do you stop this guy? seriously? Eyriss?

Anything one should keep in mind when fighting Cryx? my friend is fielding Bile thralls (which sucked so bad he's going to replace them), Mechanithralls ... great damage with the combo attack, a slayer, pistol wraith, machine wraith, bonejack and Asphyxious.

Also, can your arc nodes (bonejack) really run and then be channeled through? it seems a little op.. especially from a khador perspective.

I added Reinholdt to my 350, bringing me to 339 pts, mostly because he's a cool looking model, and was fun to paint..... hmmm.. makes me wanna make a trollblood army... anyway, he wasn't too impressive, but maybe i'm missing something? Sorcha doesn't seem able to hit ANYTHING with her ranged weapon.. actually all my ranged seems to suck RAT, and the insane DEF that everything has compared to khador, makes me depressed. It feels like if you break DEF, (which is an auto hit for most on khador), it's impossible not to do damage... maybe i'm overly negative.

This is a DAMN fun game by the way, i'm totally addicted.

Knock downs are great. Ranged attacks to strip away nearby models. Stay away from him=)

bile thralls are simply awesome for their points. Easy to counter in small numbers. Buddies list seems solid enough..
General advice? shut down the arc nodes when possible. Mind you, only some of cryx casters rely on the spell slinging.

Also, can your arc nodes (bonejack) really run and then be channeled through? it seems a little op.. especially from a khador perspective. allocate 1 focus, run 14" channel through it, then move your caster back=) HUGE threat range. Yes, it's legal.

Umm, you can pop feat and auto hit everything in melee and everything with ranged on 3+'s. Or you have several spells that can help you as well. Amusingly enough, sometimes you are better off attack your own stuff to hurt them. Throws, slams over them, and other such things (CRA, CMA) can help overcome high def.

And having 1-4 more points of arm on almost everything in your faction means that you are ignoring most unboosted attacks.

In short, get a few more games in and it'll click.

Oh, and while I personally believe 350 is a good starting point, I would advise against infantry for now. 500 points is great for them, but some combos area a hard counter in smaller games.

Fun thing is that Sorscha is the best 'caster in battlegroup games (and one of the top-'casters in tournament games, too). Icy Gaze and Wind Rush are so amazingly good it is not funny. :D

Play more games you'll get hang of it. Asphyxious is an absolute beast in CC, no questioning that. You just need to learn to counter him.

I agree with Tarzen that bringing in infantry so early might be somewhat of an issue. At least if you don't have any infantry of your own. I recommend Widowmakers (there's a reason why everyone hates them). >=]

Bilethralls are amazing. They exist for one purpose, Purge. As the classic Cryx motto go; "When in doubt, Purge." ;)
