I posted this in my WiP thread, but am giving it it's own little thread here, as I'd really like a larger audience for feedback. This is my Raven Guard army, which I'm doing for the new Tale of Painters. I've never done black before, so it was a bit stressful, but I think it came out well. I posted my steps below.

Here's the steps I took:

1. Prime Black
2. 2-3 layers of 3:1 Water:Chaos Black
3. Black Ink Wash
4. Broad Gray/Black/Water Highlight
5. Same as #4 but more Gray and a smaller area.
6. Same as #4 but more Gray and a smaller area.
7. Transfers for Tactical Squad symbols and Ravenwing Symbol from Bell of Lost Souls.
8. Basing (Glue, GW Sand, Three Layers of Gray)
9. Matte Varnish
10. Hard Coat on the armor and gun.

Although this may sound ironic, coming from me, I would say you need a brighter and more contrasty final highlight on your black.

Everything else looks pretty nice, but a final mix of codex/fortress (50/50) grey would give you a nice 'pop' finish, and really make them stand out.

Also, it would get rid of the need for the gloss varnish, which I personally don't like (although it is definately a personal preference thing).

I'm finding it a bit hard to see much detail on these guys - but I think you are on the right track - black can be a real pain to do - especially over that much detail. Any chance of a bigger pic so I can CC better?
