View Full Version : [VOTING] Mano a Mano minus_t April 26th, 2008, 01:00 Bit of a quiet one this, but who am I to speak...?
A big well done to everyone who got something finished, and without further adieu...

Voting closes on Friday the second, giving you one week to place your vote!
-t. Seasonreaper April 26th, 2008, 01:24 I'll hand my vote down to Chaos. Pity theres so few entries really... something about Gaunt's entry doesn't look right in my eyes, and the other one is mine, so that only leaves Chaos' entry. Not that I'm voting on it 'cause theres no other choice, I like how the entire piece fits together :). Ancalagon April 26th, 2008, 01:48 I think these entries could maybe all look better with slightly different photography, but well done to all 3. I'm going to give my vote to Guant, because I think it's a cool idea executed really well. Good job guys! Walex April 26th, 2008, 01:55 Poor show on my behalf, I just didn't get done in time.
The basic idea I was going to do was an old vampire (which I got done) being held up by the witch hunter from warhammer quest (which I didn't).
The vampire:http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj135/WallaWallaWalex/006-2.jpg
His pose just screams out for it really. mpdscott April 26th, 2008, 02:12 I wish I'd had time to work on my entry :(
It would have had the title "Crazy vs Crazy", and was an Empire Flagellant swinging a flail at a Night Goblin Fanatic (obviously swinging his ball and chain).
Still, good work the three of you. Shonuff April 26th, 2008, 02:35 Wow.
Impressive work on all three entries. I like parts on each of them, as each has it's own unique story.
I am going to have to give it to Gaunt, and there is many reasons but the main one is I like hos with just two models (the shooter and shootee of the plasma/melta) works 100% on their own, but putting the other models in with it, the two don't stand out like the others are just watching. They work as a whol to complete the scene (including the lava creepers)
Great work Gaunt.
I love the tau and Orc also, but to me, with them both dark, the base/ground is too dark, they blend in.
if the floor was given as much attention as the models (which are beautifully paints btw), Gaunt would not be getting my vote.
Same with the chaos. It's what they're standing on that makes "the scene" for me. Beautiful paint job guys, I'm serious. good work everyone.
Just fear my entry...for the next one.. Chaos877 April 26th, 2008, 02:40 heh, at least my entry got one vote... my vote goes to gaunt (curse you for your supuriority with scenery!). nice painting on the assault marine. Legionnaire April 26th, 2008, 03:30 I like em all, but Gaunts great OSL work and concept gives him that edge which made me vote for him.
Congrats to all of you! Guant April 26th, 2008, 05:10 Id never vote for myself so I went with the chaos one. I like the whole 'nid running down the pole idea and the painting is very well done, though rather glossy in my opinion(remeber I like my models drab and dirty ;)) SentryKiller April 26th, 2008, 21:15 Man, I'm mad I missed out on this one. Voted for SeasonReaper... the melta damage on the Necron for Gaunt just didn't sit right for me. Excellent work overall on Gaunt's piece, but as the rules said, its about the mano-a-mano, and SR's did that for me. S-N April 26th, 2008, 21:17 I'm voting Gaunt on this one. His excellent scenery (is it ever not?) really sets up the epic-ness of the entire scene. I also thing it as more movement; it actually seems like the models are in the middle of a battle. Great idea with the flying thing too.
The tau standoff one is great though, that'd have to get my hypothetical #2. The bases are a little bland, and the two models are too close in palette range, but I like it none the less.
The Raptor/Tyranid one is a wonderful concept, but I don't really see the fluidity in it. It sort of looks like they're really close to each other; the poses aren't dynamic.
All of them look good though, so kudos to all entries. Chaos877 April 26th, 2008, 22:03 seems fitting that there are so few entries on an 'mano a mano' contest. I guess 6.66 of the votes is pretty good on a forst entry:P theyak April 27th, 2008, 20:39 Hmmm... was the contest open to projects ongoing? I'm pretty sure I've seen one of those in WIP before. Seasonreaper April 27th, 2008, 20:42 Well, looks like Guant wins this one :D. I mean yeah theres still a few days left to vote but I don't see me or Chaos catching up with you. Good job on your entry ;). Gebadire April 27th, 2008, 20:58 Chaos gets my vote this time! There is something about it I love, although the other two are both excellent! Well done to all three! Guant April 28th, 2008, 05:03 Hmmm... was the contest open to projects ongoing? I'm pretty sure I've seen one of those in WIP before.
You did, but when this contest started it gave me an excuss to repaint the figures and work on some of the light effects. This is why in the far away shot some figures arnt painted very good, but the close ups show the two that were repainted and finished for the contest. Tekore April 28th, 2008, 14:17 You impress, Guant, as always. Thanks for your great entry here, and other work.
Tekore minus_t April 28th, 2008, 21:11 Hmmm... was the contest open to projects ongoing? I'm pretty sure I've seen one of those in WIP before.
While this is indeed an old project, there is nothing in the contest rules saying that the model/project must be completely new.
This means that Gaunt is completely able to repaint sections of his diorama and enter it.
However, I, for one, feel that this is slightly against the spirit of the contest, and thus I will be reviewing the rules for future contests.

Terribly sorry about that if it come across as unsportsman like of myself. It won't happen again. Phormio April 29th, 2008, 13:23 I just voted for whatever. Don't care and the reason why????
CRAP photography.
I know it can be difficult taking pictures of mini's but it gets real hard to tell which one is the best painted when they're all out of focus, or if in focus, or to far away to actually tell if it's a good job or not.
Come on - -T posted a guide on photography, now its up to everyone else to apply the theory. theyak April 29th, 2008, 17:19 I just voted for whatever. Don't care and the reason why????

Hmmm.. upon closer inspection, I DON'T see an entry by you. Want the bar raised? HELP raise it. This is a community effort not solely a mod effort. Jon Quixote April 29th, 2008, 18:07 Come on chaps, keep it nice.
Don't discourage all of the guys that actually made an effort. This is a friendly comp to inspire, after all.
-t's tutorial is good and I do recommend it.
Hopefully, I'm getting back into the swing of painting and I've missed not entering these comps, I think a larger turn-out would be good too.
So provisionally, you'll have one more entrant next month. Boomer April 30th, 2008, 10:28 I voted for Chaos887.
I think the Ork looks really brutal and quite menacing,
but the defiant Tau shows him no fear!
But I got to say I do also like the other just as much, so well done to
all of you.
Shame there was a small turn out, count me in for the next one! Triumph Of Man April 30th, 2008, 10:50 Didn't like the Ork/Tau entry, I believe both models just seem to be out of the packet without any attempt to get them to fit together. The Kommando Nob is leaning on a rock, attempting to glare the Pathfinder into submission Chuck Norris style while the Pathfinder reaches frantically for his... keys maybe?
Why is the Ork not trying to rip the Pathfinder to shreds? Why is the Pathfinder not unloading a burst of pulse fire into the Kommando? Why are they staring so creepily at each other? Is this going to be the beginning of an awkward yet beautiful relationship? Or is Orky really Tau guy's long lost sister?!
Find out next week on The Bold and the Beautiful.
Same problem for the Raptor/Hormagaunt entry. Although it's more dynamically posed than than the Ork/Tau entry, it still suffers from being a staring contest rather than a duel.
"Bugger this giant chainsaw weapon and chaos arm-of-doom-that-could-crush-your-face-like-a-melon! I've got SLAUGHTER-VISION tm, made and blessed by Khorne industries."
And that leaves Gaunt's entry. Paint seems to be a bit thick in areas, and the photography leaves a lot to be desired, but your dudes are actually fighting. So you've got my vote. Chaos877 May 1st, 2008, 03:45 Triumph of man, realistically, If anything (Human-sized) took a pulse carbine to the face point blank, It would die. But, While the ork was dying, it would most likely snip the tau in half. Likewise, If the ork were to make a move to kill the tau, the tau would shoot him in the face, thus the obvious stalemate. No need to be so critical, Its my first contest entry, It's bpund to have some inconcistancies in it. And as Yak said, If you want the contests to have better entries, enter for yourself. No need to pick on a small newbie such as myself. Tekore May 1st, 2008, 03:51 You guys rock for entering, these things are tough to work on, and this was an especially challenging contest, in my opinion. In my first contest entry, I was asked if I had spilled jam on my model (from the ugly purple paint), so I know how it is. Nowadays, Koss and I are buddies, and often go on Prospector / Ewok field trips together, so it all works out! Congrats again on rocking and I'm looking forward to seeing next month's assignment!
Tekore Chaos877 May 1st, 2008, 04:18 Assignment? Am I obligated to something now?;? I don't believe I stated anywhere I wanted "better" entries. All I did was give my reasoning as to why I voted the way I did. That way if you want my vote (or anyone of a like mind), next time you know what you can change. By offering constructive criticism I am certainly not "picking" on you, you'd get something nasty in your rep bucket if I was. You'll notice that I offered criticism on all three entries, not just yours.
So now you know that I don't like staring contests, I like to see models fighting, bugger who's going to win. Whether or not you decide to act on this information is totally up to you. Guant May 1st, 2008, 13:31 Im on the fence with this one, indeed your criticism was well intended(You made jokes about it, bonus points for sarcasm) but as a newbie in the painting area(as I am not), it can easily be taken as to harsh(as people can tend to be on forums). Chaos has to learn that c and c comes with criticism and to be a great artist you have to learn how to take it stride(not that he hasn't already). I mean Ive ben told many many times that my paintings always look to thick in my application, but hey I take what I can from those comments and just keep on painting. The thick style of paints is my style!! And Im not just going to change it because a few people online said I should. HOWEVER I will take into consideration what the comments say and see if I can improve upon it.
So in the end remember that this is just for fun! So all comments that suggest different metods should be taken in jest. :D. I can see what you mean about my entry though, so all's well with me. Just gives me something to work towards when the next contest comes out :). minus_t May 11th, 2008, 09:56 Well, another contest comes to an end...
Congratulations to Gaunt on the win, and well done to Chaos877 and Seasonreaper for their entries.
Gaunt, you've had a few days to think about a theme, please send me a PM with your ideas for the next contest.
-t. Seasonreaper May 11th, 2008, 11:34 Good job on the win Guant :). | |
