View Full Version : Help with a Star Dragon ColonelMendez445 May 11th, 2008, 18:33 Hey. I had just played my friends high elf list, in which he ran the Star Dragon. If anyone has any other tactics then just shooting at it, I'd appriciatre it a lot in case if he plays that army list again this coming up Wensday at the shop. Cheers :drinking: Stonehambey May 11th, 2008, 19:25 How about MRoChallenge from a lord with hammerers. Can bog it down, with time to get some support in Arklite May 11th, 2008, 22:02 a lord with the master rune of challenge and a monster killing combo would be ideal. an ASF weapon with high strength being top notch for this.
alas i can't really reccommend much more. the master rune of challenge is your best bet for forcing it into combat and from there you should be able to eliminate it in melee. otherwise shoot it with all you have :/ ColonelMendez445 May 12th, 2008, 20:58 thnx for the replys so far :drinking:. does anyone else have any ideas on how to beat the star dragon? gingerninja May 12th, 2008, 22:55 A Dwarf Lord with the following combination should be able to hold him up quite nicely.
Dwarf Lord: 279pts
Gromil Armour, Shield, Great Weapon
Rune of Resistance, Master Rune of Steel
Master Rune of the Challange
Shieldbearers
Make the guy come to you, and then have your lord challenge smash the dragon with his great weapon attacks. He won't really be able to harm you with your superior armour and re-rolls.
Make sure he is in a unit of Ironbreakers, and you should have it sewn up.
:ninja3: out Stonehambey May 12th, 2008, 23:28 I would go for hammerers over ironbreakers. Immune to fear and terror plus stubborn. :C wraith20033 May 15th, 2008, 04:15 Another trick you might try is to use the Rune of Wrath and Fury from the Anvil of doom on him. As long as it goes off he wont be able to use his "fly" move, so mowing it down or even charging it becomes possible. I would still go with the lord in hammerer combo to beat him though, or bring 8x bolt throwers and watch his face! tuxedo clank May 18th, 2008, 13:30 my favourite tactic is to use the thorgrim grudgebearer because he will kill anything in combat.
a better tactic is to kit out a lord with the MRoSmiting and the rune of challenge, bye bye dragon in one or 2 unsaved wounds. stick the lord on an oathstone and put him in a hammerer unit and boom the opponent has to take you as if you were a unit facing him. ColonelMendez445 May 20th, 2008, 02:56 Well, I was finally able to kill it 8X. I used my lord w/shieldbearers. rune of stone, rune of kragg the grim, rune of fury, and rune of snorri, a bsb with a rune of cleaving fury, and the rune of challenge with a unit of 22x hammers w/full command and with the rune of determination as backup. Using the rune of challenge, I drew the dragon to me and challenged with my hammers champion and out of the dragon and princes attacks, he only did ONE WOUND ;?!!!!!!!!!! I was stunned and now I have an idea what to take whenever I face him.:drinking: wraith20033 May 20th, 2008, 03:47 Challenging with the unit champion could have been a big mistake. Against a dragon with rider, that almost guarantees he gets the max 5 overkill combat res. He might not win combat, but he probably wont flee either.
Best bet you have if he charges you is to NOT issue a challenge, even with your lord. That way your lord, hammerers, and any other characters in there can hit him. If you really want to challenge (or he challenges you) take a defense oriented lord and use him instead. With the rune of resistance, shielbearers, and the MR of Spite, he'll be hard pressed to even wound you. That should ensure he loses to combat res.
Also bear in mind that even if you beat him, with 3d6 flee move he will quite likely run away successfully, rally next turn, flame a bunch of your guys, then fly around and be annoying the rest of the game.... so trying to kill it in a round of combat is a good thing. even if teh rider survives, poor guy is on foot and much less of a threat | |
