These guys are not much more than what the box art represents but I thought I would share them none-the-less... Time spent painting was maybe 10-15 hours - so about 2 hours a piece, unfortunately that really translates into about a month as I have found finding time to paint lately a struggle. :)

I am jumping back into painting though with a veagance and will be working on some Blood Angel stuff again as well as some more chaos marines for my army... :)

Picked up the GW washes and the foundation paints (finally) and got to experiment with them a bit. I really like the washes a lot. Very different than inks. I kind of got them at the end of this project so will have to further evaluate them on other projects...

Cheers,

-Mike

Cool!

My favourite part has got to be the banner, and the cloaks.

Looks pretty nice there, Slorak. The banner is just awesome.

But I must say that it shows that you have only spend a few hours on these, especialy on the armour, which is very flat and dull. A few washes to shade it and some highlights are very much needed, IMO, since I know you can do a lot better than this.

These guys definitely don't have excessive highlights but they are base coated, shaded, and highlighted. The models are a commission job and were painted to specific guidelines. I did have some freedom with the banner though (just a bit) and I put a bit more into the banner so that it would stand out a touch.

I know the metal looks a bit flat in the pictures. They were washed with the Badab Black ink glaze and are much more subtle than black ink by itself. I think the light from the photobox washed it out more than it is in real life.

Keep in mind though that these are painted to a good gaming standard and definitely not showcase models. My goal was to achieve a look similar to the box cover.

Cheers,

-Mike

Well I certainly did not want to sound like I was slating you, because that was not my intention, but I looked and these and thought that everything else I've seen form you trumps these without a fight. You never mentioned that these were a commission, nor that you had to follow some close instructions in a time frame, so I just wondered what was up considering the quality of your previous work.

Also, I have no idea how these look on the cover art.

I'm sorry if it came out wrong. :(

No offense taken. I am a fairly lousy picture taker to begin with... :) But I suspect part of the issue is that the group shot is larger than the actual miniatures.

Another thing might be the large area of metal armor - sided next to grey fur. Figure wise they are rather bland. I did try to add a hint of color with any little bits hanging off, but in particular with the hair.

Since I was painting them in batches - I split them up into 3 groups and did 3 different hair colors. Since they are basically rank and file I stopped from over doing the highlights but instead chose a goal of creating a cohesive looking group as a whole.

While it took me over a month to complete - I was only painting for an hour or so a night only a few nights a week. It also got too hot to paint out in my game room (built off the garage) so I have to negotiate with the wife to allow me to paint inside! :) I think in person they look nicer than the pictures (don't we all say that!) definitely not my best work, but not my worst either... Just to a certain level is all.

Cheers!

heh heh heh... yes... I painted them. I don't play fantasy either... Though I wouldn't mind. Just don't get enough time to paint all my own stuff. Ironic isn't it.

Cheers,
