'lo all,

EDIT: Please see the better photo in the reply below. Thanks!

Here is the current state of the veteran Kroot warrior I've been working on. I apologize for the darkness of the picture; I didn't realize that I had the exposure set a bit too low until I loaded the photos onto my computer. I'll take some brighter pictures in the morning and then put them up in the afternoon. Anyway, as for the mini, I need to finish the rifle, the pistol, the quills, and the base. For the base, I'm having half of it grassy (flock & static) and the other half muddy (gloss coat). Of course I'll be adding mud to the Kroot's feet since he was just walking through some :)

I'm looking for suggestions on a couple of things. First, the armor -- I tried to simulate oxidized bronze on the armor plates, the bells, and the chimes. How do you think they look? I'm concerned that they might either blend into the skin tone or otherwise appear completely unremarkable.

I'm also not decided on how to do the rifle and pistol. So far I have the wooden stock for the rifle, but I'm not sure if I want to do the rest of it as I did my other Kroot (simple flat greys), or if I want to continue with the tarnished look (now that I know that bronze, and by extension gunmetal, generally oxidizes only superficially).

Your time and consideration is appreciated!

Regards,
sky

'lo again, sorry for the delay in getting a decent picture up. I hope this time the picture is clear enough that you are able to give some feedback! (Was the picture really that bad, or do Kroot just get no love? ;))

I've only done a tiny bit of work since the last photo -- mostly just coloring in his belt, which is barely discernible, and doing some freehand on his forehead. It actually was intended to just start as a row of spikes, but instead I changed it into a sort of Eldar-esque gem. Fluffwise, this kindred worked with the Eldar for quite some time before betraying them for a more lucrative Imperial Guard deal. Unfortunately for the Kroot, they had crossed the wrong Eldar, and were eventually hunted down to all but the last.

I look forward to your C&C :)

Regards,
sky

I think it may have been the picture - I vaguely remember seeing this, and thinking 'I can't actually see what he's on about!' So I didn't comment.

That and I'm not a very advanced painter, and wouldn't really know what to suggest in response to any of your questions.

Anyway, enough self-depreciation for today...

The armour seems to me to stand out well enough from the skin, and I can see the effect of the rust/oxidisation on the chest plate (and on the other bits as well, actually)

I'm not sure about the rifle. I suppose you could paint it flat, see if that looks ok and, if it doesn't, add some corrosion to it.

It looks good, though. Very subtle effects, but it makes for a very realistic looking mini.

I'm glad that you like them! They're mostly just a series of washes along with some light brushwork.

(snip)
Thanks for your C&C! Sorry about that crummy photo. I'm still not sure what to do about the rifle -- I use an off-white base for the "aged" appearance, so it'd be completely different from doing flats. But like you say, I could try the flats and, if they don't work out, just put another couple layers on top of 'em. Might look like superficial damage from the oxidization. I should be able to make more progress today or tomorrow after work. Here's hoping things go well!

Thanks again,
sky
